If a Chrome Headless screenshot on Linux is blank or missing content, first check what the page had rendered at capture time. Verify the final URL, title, DOM, console errors, and failed requests; then match the symptom to a likely cause such as timing, navigation, viewport, fonts, GPU-dependent rendering, or Chrome startup. There is no universal fix: the right next step depends on what is missing and the exact browser and runtime versions.
Start by identifying what failed
Before changing flags or adding delays, record the environment and inspect the page at the moment of capture. This separates a browser that never launched from a page that loaded incorrectly and from a screenshot taken before content appeared.
- Record the Chrome or Chromium binary and version, Puppeteer version (if used), Linux distribution and container base image, launch arguments, target URL, viewport, and screenshot method.
- Capture Chrome’s stderr and automation-library errors. Note whether navigation completed, timed out, or redirected.
- At capture time, record the final URL and page title, check for a known content selector or expected DOM text, and collect page console errors and failed network requests.
- Check the actual image dimensions and confirm the screenshot was written to the destination you expect.
Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guide covers missing shared libraries, sandbox launch errors, fonts, and an AppArmor issue affecting Chrome for Testing binaries on Ubuntu 23.10 and later. Those are different failure classes; browser stderr and runtime details help tell them apart. Puppeteer troubleshooting
Fix content that appears after capture
If the expected content is absent from the DOM at capture time but appears later, the screenshot is too early for that page. Wait for a meaningful selector or application-specific ready state rather than treating a generic delay as a reliable fix. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates waiting for a selector before capturing. Puppeteer screenshots

Puppeteer example: wait for the content you need
Replace the URL and selector with the target page and a selector that only appears when the relevant content is ready. This example uses a bounded selector wait; if it times out, investigate why the selector never appeared instead of simply increasing the delay indefinitely.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1365, height: 768 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]', { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The selector is an example, not a universal attribute. Use an element or readiness condition owned by the application. If the page redirects, blocks a request, or reports a script error, resolve that page-level issue rather than assuming more waiting will help.
Chrome command-line capture timeout
For command-line screenshots, Chrome documents a capture timeout option. A timeout can give a page more time, but it cannot guarantee that a specific asynchronous application state has completed. Pair it with a check of the loaded page and use page-specific readiness when you need certainty. See Chrome’s Headless Chrome documentation for command-line capture and viewport examples.

Check navigation, redirects, and page errors
A blank screenshot may faithfully show a blank or error page rather than indicate a screenshot bug. Compare the requested URL with the final URL, inspect the title and DOM, and review navigation errors, console output, and failed requests. A redirect to a login, bot-check, or error page—or a blocked script request—can leave the expected content unavailable even though Chrome produced an image.

- Unexpected final URL: inspect redirects and the destination page’s state.
- Expected selector absent: determine whether the app failed, the request was blocked, or the page is still loading.
- Console or request errors: investigate those errors in the same environment and with the same launch arguments.
- DOM contains the expected content but the image does not: proceed to viewport, screenshot mode, fonts, and rendering checks.
Verify viewport and screenshot mode
Set dimensions explicitly when the layout is clipped, responsive, or unlike what you see interactively. Then compare those requested dimensions with the output image. Chrome’s command-line screenshot documentation includes the --window-size option and viewport examples. A mismatch can trigger a different responsive layout or make content fall outside the captured area.
If Chrome launches and the DOM contains the content but the image is empty or incomplete, compare a headed run as a diagnostic. That comparison can help isolate a headless rendering difference; it does not establish that Linux headless mode needs a display server. Chrome’s headless documentation describes headless capture without requiring Xvfb simply because no visible display exists.

Investigate fonts only when text or glyphs are affected
If the page structure and other visuals appear but text is missing, substituted, or rendered incorrectly, verify that the Linux image has suitable fonts for the scripts on the page. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide specifically notes that extra fonts may be needed for CJK rendering. Missing fonts are a plausible explanation for glyph and typography symptoms, not a general explanation for a wholly blank screenshot. Puppeteer troubleshooting
Investigate GPU setup only for GPU-dependent content
GPU-related flags are relevant when the missing region depends on GPU features, such as a WebGL view, or when logs point to rendering problems. They are not a generic remedy for ordinary missing webpage content.
The Puppeteer guide says chrome-headless-shell disables GPU compositing. Chromium’s GPU guidance says --enable-gpu disables forced software rendering in headless Chrome. Check which browser mode and binary you are running before applying that advice; full Chrome and the headless shell do not behave identically. Fix launch failures separately from screenshot failures
If Chrome exits or never starts, first inspect stderr and verify the shared-library dependencies required by the browser binary. Review sandbox configuration and any relevant AppArmor behavior for the specific distribution and Chrome package. Do not treat launch flags as interchangeable with screenshot-timing fixes.
Puppeteer strongly discourages launching with --no-sandbox; its troubleshooting guide describes that option only for content the operator absolutely trusts. Prefer getting the browser’s sandbox working rather than disabling it as a default workaround. Because packaging and security behavior can vary, confirm the browser, distribution, and container details before applying a version-specific fix. Puppeteer troubleshooting
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Observed symptom | Evidence to collect | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Blank page or unexpected URL | Final URL, title, navigation errors, DOM | Navigation outcome, redirects, blocked requests, or a page-level error |
| Content appears after capture | DOM at capture time, selector readiness, application state | Wait for a meaningful selector or ready condition; for CLI capture, consider a bounded timeout |
| Text or glyphs absent or wrong | Whether DOM text exists, affected scripts, installed fonts | Linux font availability, especially for CJK glyphs |
| Layout clipped or unlike expectation | Viewport settings and output image dimensions | Explicit viewport or window size and screenshot mode |
| GPU- or WebGL-dependent area absent | Browser mode, GPU logs, feature requirement | GPU setup and whether --enable-gpu is appropriate for that mode |
| Browser exits or never launches | stderr, missing libraries, sandbox errors, distribution | Runtime dependencies and sandbox or AppArmor configuration |

If you want an API to return a screenshot without maintaining your own Linux Chrome runtime, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request for a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its pre-capture cleanup accepts the cookie or consent banner and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
