Yes. On an iPhone or iPad, Apple Screen Time can limit Google Chrome as an app, schedule when it is available, and apply web-content restrictions. Website blocking is not guaranteed to behave identically in every Chrome session, however, so parents should combine app limits, URL restrictions, alternate-browser controls, and a Screen Time passcode. Google Family Link adds Chrome-specific website lists, but its rules stop applying if a child signs out of Chrome on iOS.
What Screen Time can control in Chrome
Screen Time has several different control layers. Keeping them separate prevents the common mistake of expecting a Chrome app limit to block individual websites.

- App-level control: an App Limit counts time spent in Chrome and can stop the app after the allowance is used.
- Device and schedule control: Downtime restricts apps and notifications during set hours, except for apps you allow.
- Web-level control: Content & Privacy Restrictions can filter adult content or add specific URLs to a blocked list.
- Device-management control: parents can restrict browser installation, purchases, downloads, and related settings.
- Activity reporting: Screen Time provides app and website summaries, but Apple does not promise identical URL-level reporting for every third-party browser. Chrome activity may appear mainly as Chrome usage depending on the iOS and Chrome versions.
Apple documents these capabilities in its Screen Time guide. Google’s current Chrome documentation says Chrome for iPhone and iPad requires iOS 17 or later: Chrome on iOS requirements and setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Set a daily limit for Chrome
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- For a child managed through Family Sharing, tap the child’s name. On the child’s device, turn on App & Website Activity if it is not already enabled.
- Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
- Search for or select Chrome. If it is not listed, open Chrome and browse briefly first so Screen Time records activity.
- Choose the daily allowance. You can set different limits for different days when that option appears.
- Tap Add or the equivalent confirmation control.
Apple changes labels slightly between iOS releases and account configurations, but the relevant controls remain under Screen Time, App Limits, and App & Website Activity. When the allowance is exhausted, Chrome should show a Screen Time limit screen. Depending on the Family Sharing setup, a child may be able to request additional time from a parent.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Use Downtime for school or overnight hours
For a recurring no-browsing period, open Settings → Screen Time → Downtime and set a schedule. Downtime is broader than a Chrome-only limit: it affects apps and notifications unless they are designated as allowed. Check that Chrome is not unintentionally included in an allowed-app list, and test the schedule on the child’s actual device.
Block websites opened in Chrome
Apple’s documented URL-blocking route is:
- Go to Settings → Screen Time.
- Select the child’s name if you manage a child’s device.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
- Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites.
- Under Never Allow, tap Add Website and enter the URL.
The full Apple instructions are in the iPhone Web Content guide. You can add several sites, use Apple’s adult-content filter, or—where offered by the current iOS configuration—restrict browsing to approved websites.
Enter the domains that the service actually uses. A rule for one hostname may not cover a regional domain, a redirect destination, a separate subdomain, or a version opened inside another app. Blocking a website is also different from blocking its native app: a Chrome URL rule does not automatically remove or restrict an installed YouTube, Reddit, or social-media app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese are system-level web controls, but Apple’s public instructions do not guarantee that every URL behaves identically in Chrome and Safari. Results can depend on the iOS release, Chrome version, redirects, private-browsing behavior, and whether another browser or an in-app browser is being used.
Prevent easy browser bypasses
A Chrome-only limit is weak if another browser remains available. In Content & Privacy Restrictions, review the controls for apps and purchases, including:

- Restricting installation and redownloading of apps.
- Removing or limiting other browsers such as Safari, Firefox, Edge, or Brave where the available controls permit it.
- Protecting Screen Time with a four-digit passcode the child does not know.
- Managing the child through Family Sharing so settings and exception requests are handled by the parent.
Hiding a built-in app or feature is not the same as deleting it; Apple describes this as temporarily removing it from the Home Screen. Exact controls differ for third-party browsers. See Apple’s Content & Privacy Restrictions documentation.
Use Google Family Link for Chrome-specific site lists
Family Link can filter Chrome on iPhone and iPad when the child is signed in to Chrome with a Family Link-managed Google Account. In the Family Link app, open child → Controls → Google Chrome and Web. Google provides options to:
- Allow all sites except those you block.
- Try to block explicit sites.
- Allow only approved sites.
- Maintain approved and blocked website lists.
- Handle requests to visit blocked sites.
- Control whether sites can request camera or microphone access.
- Turn off Incognito mode for the signed-in managed account.
Google’s instructions are at Family Link Chrome and web filters. The limitations are important: if the child signs out of Chrome on iOS, Family Link’s Chrome settings no longer apply to that browsing session, and other browsers may remain available.
Domain formatting also matters. Google notes that a rule for www.google.com does not automatically cover a differently formed address such as www.google.co.uk. A domain-level rule can cover a broader set of related addresses; individual website entries may not.
Apple Screen Time or Family Link?
| Need | Apple Screen Time | Google Family Link |
|---|---|---|
| Limit total Chrome time | Suitable with App Limits | Not its main iOS strength |
| Schedule device or app access | Downtime and app controls | More account- and child-management focused |
| Block specific websites | System web-content controls; browser behavior can vary | Detailed Chrome-specific approved and blocked lists |
| Cover other browsers | Configure Apple app, web, and installation restrictions | Chrome rules do not automatically cover other browsers |
| Remote parent management | Strongest with Apple Family Sharing | Managed through Family Link |
| Resistance to Chrome sign-out | Device-wide controls can remain in force | Google explicitly warns that sign-out disables its Chrome rules on iOS |
Choose Screen Time as the foundation when the device is an iPhone or iPad and you need whole-device limits. Add Family Link when Chrome-specific site lists or a managed Google Account are important. Neither system is universally superior.

Troubleshoot common failures
Chrome does not appear in App Limits
- Open Chrome and browse briefly.
- Confirm App & Website Activity is enabled.
- Return to Screen Time and check the usage report.
- Search for Chrome under App Limits instead of relying only on category listings.
- Verify that you selected the correct family member and device.
- Update iOS and Chrome, then restart the iPhone or iPad.
- As a last resort, reinstall Chrome. Google lists reinstalling among general fixes, but it may change usage history and does not guarantee that Screen Time settings will be preserved or repaired.

- Check the exact URL, including
www, regional domains, and subdomains. - Look for redirect domains or a related service domain.
- Confirm you used Web Content restrictions, not only an App Limit.
- Check whether Chrome is signed out of the Family Link account.
- Test whether the page is being opened through another browser or an in-app browser.
- Confirm the rule targets the correct child and device and has synchronized through Family Sharing.
- Test during normal hours and during Downtime to distinguish a schedule issue from a URL rule.
Best setup for common goals
Limit total Chrome time
Use an App Limit, protect it with a Screen Time passcode, and review other installed browsers before assuming the limit covers all browsing.
Block a few services
Add each known URL under Web Content restrictions. Include redirect, regional, and related domains where necessary, and test on the actual device.
Allow only school or approved sites
Use the approved-sites option when it is available on the device’s Web Content screen. Family Link can also maintain an approved-site list for signed-in Chrome.
Restrict browsing at set times
Use Downtime for school or overnight schedules, while leaving essential communication apps in the allowed list.

Manage a child across Apple and Google devices
Use Apple Family Sharing and Screen Time for the iPhone or iPad, then add Family Link for Chrome and other Google-managed devices. Keep the alternate-browser and sign-out limitations in your plan.
Control your own habits
Screen Time is easy to override when you control its passcode. Stronger self-control usually requires another person to hold the passcode or a dedicated blocker with cross-platform enforcement, additional permissions, and possibly a subscription.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Screen Time cannot promise for Chrome
Apple says Screen Time can summarize app and website activity, but that does not establish a complete, URL-by-URL audit of every page opened in Chrome. Do not treat a Chrome usage total as a guaranteed browsing history. Verify behavior on the exact iOS and Chrome versions in use, especially after an update.
Apple has also announced redesigned child-safety features, including Ask to Browse and new time-management controls, but availability depends on the relevant iOS release. Details are in Apple’s June 2026 announcement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I limit Chrome but leave Safari unrestricted?
Yes. Apply an App Limit to Chrome only. If the goal is to restrict the websites themselves, add Web Content rules; those rules are broader than a Chrome-only app limit and may affect other browsers.

Can Apple Screen Time block Chrome’s Incognito mode?
Apple Screen Time does not provide a general Chrome Incognito switch. Google documents Incognito controls through Family Link when the child is signed in to Chrome with a managed account.
Does Family Link work if the child uses Safari?
Family Link’s Chrome settings are for Chrome. Safari and other browsers can remain outside those Chrome-specific rules, so use Apple’s device-wide web and app restrictions as well.
What happens if Chrome is deleted and reinstalled?
Reinstallation may change usage history or require you to recheck restrictions. It is not a guaranteed fix for Screen Time configuration.
Can I block YouTube in Chrome without blocking the YouTube app?
You can add YouTube’s web address to Web Content restrictions, but that does not automatically block the separate YouTube app. Control the app separately if needed.
