There is no universal “best” Sony soundbar setting. The right choices depend on your exact model, television, room, speakers and source. Use this guide as a reliable starting point for BRAVIA Theatre Bar 5/6/7/8/9, Theatre Quad, Theatre Trio, HT-A3000/A5000/A7000 and simpler HT-S systems, then make small changes while listening.
First identify the model number on the bar, remote, carton or Sony support page. Newer BRAVIA Theatre models use the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app for many controls, while HT-A models commonly use the remote and on-screen Advanced Settings menus.

Find your model before changing settings
Sony changes menu names and available controls between generations. The BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7/8/9, Theatre Quad and Theatre Trio generally use BRAVIA Connect; HT-A3000, HT-A5000 and HT-A7000 rely more on the remote and television menu. Entry-level models such as HT-S2000 offer fewer adjustments. Sony’s current range is listed at Sony’s soundbar catalog.

Use the correct HDMI connection
Connect the system in this order whenever possible:
#1 Best Overall
- Straight from the theater to your home: easy set-up, built-in tweeter, 2-ch speaker with simple Bluetooth connection
- Deep sound with Bass Reflex speaker
- High power with a slim design that matches any room and is perfect for small living spaces
- Voice enhancement feature is great for TV content with hushed dialogue, or to make conference call participants easier to hear
- Easy TV set up with HDMI ARC
Streaming box, console or Blu-ray player → TV HDMI input TV HDMI eARC/ARC port → Sony soundbar HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC)
Use a soundbar HDMI input for a source whose video format the TV cannot pass correctly. Prefer HDMI eARC over optical. Sony says eARC can carry Dolby Atmos based on Dolby TrueHD, DTS:X and multichannel LPCM, while ordinary ARC has more limited bandwidth. See the Sony HDMI and eARC guide.
- Soundbar eARC: On or Auto.
- TV eARC: Auto or On, if offered.
- TV digital audio: Pass-through, Bitstream, Auto or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- TV speakers: Audio system or External speakers.
- HDMI-CEC/Control for HDMI: On.
Labels differ by television brand. A TV may call the relevant option Digital audio out, Passthrough, Dolby Digital Plus or Bitstream; they are not interchangeable on every model. Optical is a fallback for basic stereo or compressed surround, not the preferred route for full eARC formats.
Choose the HDMI signal format carefully
Compatible Sony models may offer Enhanced format (4K120, 8K), Enhanced format and Standard format. Select the enhanced option only when the TV, cable and source support it. If video, HDR, Dolby Vision, 4K/120 or audio disappears, test the cable and source settings, then step down from Enhanced 4K120/8K to Enhanced, or from Enhanced to Standard.
Prepare the room and speakers
- Center the bar beneath the TV and keep its front unobstructed.
- Do not bury it in a cabinet; leave the up-firing panels clear.
- Place the subwoofer on the floor with clearance from walls and corners.
- Put rear speakers to the sides or slightly behind the main seat, not directly beside your ears.
- Remove temporary furniture, boxes and blankets that could affect calibration.
- Only then run optimization.
Up-firing Atmos effects depend on ceiling height, surface reflectivity, clearance and seating position. Calibration cannot fully correct a blocked bar, an open-sided room or poorly placed rears.
Rank #2
- IMMERSIVE SURROUND SOUND: S-Force PRO Front Surround and Dolby Digital create cinematic style surround sound.
- ENJOY CLEAR DIALOGUE AND POWERFUL SOUND: Powerful audio technology, such as the X-Balanced Speaker Unit and Separated Notch Edge, works to deliver wide-ranging sound and enhanced vocal clarity.
- SIMPLE & EASY OPERATION: The simple, compact remote control and convenient OLED display window make operation a breeze.
- WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
- EASY WIRELESS CONNECTION: Flexible layout and wireless connection to compatible BRAVIA TVs minimizes cable clutter.
Run Sony Sound Field Optimization
Optimization measures speaker and room-position information and adjusts the system. Run it again after moving the bar, subwoofer, rears or seating.
BRAVIA Connect models
- Open Sony | BRAVIA Connect.
- Choose My Devices and select the soundbar.
- Open Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Field Optimization.
This path is documented for newer BRAVIA Theatre models in Sony’s support instructions: Sony Sound Field Optimization support.
HT-A-series on-screen menu
- Press HOME.
- Choose Setup → Advanced Settings → Speaker Settings.
- Select Sound Field Optimization.
Follow the on-screen instructions and remain quiet during the measurement. The HT-A3000 guide describes the process at Sony’s HT-A3000 help guide.

Movies, TV and Dolby Atmos settings
Keep two concepts separate:
- Incoming format: Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital, DTS:X or LPCM supplied by the source.
- Processing: Sound Field, Immersive Audio Enhancement, Vertical Surround Engine, Dolby Speaker Virtualizer or DTS Neural:X.
Processing can expand stereo, but it cannot turn a stereo stream into discrete native Atmos. Confirm the bar or app identifies the incoming format before troubleshooting effects.
Rank #3
- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Experience authentic cinema surround sound in your living room. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X create an immersive multi-dimensional soundscape that brings movies to life with the creator’s intent.
- CENTER SPEAKER FOR CLEAR DIALOGUE: Catch every word in the scene with a dedicated center channel speaker that ensures voices remain clear across all content.
- WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
- SOUND FROM ABOVE: Experience sound positioned in vertical space with Sony's Vertical Surround Engine, no in-ceiling or up-firing speakers needed.
- SOUNDS FROM SIDES: Hear a wide surround field using only front speakers with digital S-Force Pro.
Recommended movie starting point
- Sound Field or Immersive Audio Enhancement: On.
- Night mode: Off for normal viewing.
- Use the native Dolby or DTS presentation when the bar reports it.
On the HT-A7000, Sony lists Sound Mode On, Dolby Speaker Virtualizer and DTS Neural:X. DTS Neural:X can be unavailable for some high-sample-rate, Dolby or DSD sources; details are in Sony’s HT-A7000 sound-effect guide. Compare processing with a familiar scene and keep the setting that sounds clear without artificial echo. Some Atmos mixes use height or rear channels sparingly, so quiet speakers do not automatically indicate a fault.
Make dialogue clearer without ruining the mix
Voice mode
Use Voice mode at the lowest useful level when speech is masked by effects, the room is reflective, you sit off-axis or the bar is mounted unusually high or low. Excessive enhancement can make voices thin or processed and may unbalance effects.
Acoustic Center Sync
Compatible Sony TVs can act as part of the center channel through TV Center Speaker mode. HT-A7000 documentation requires the supplied HDMI cable and TV center-speaker cable, and availability depends on the TV and settings. It can anchor voices to the screen, but misalignment between TV and bar can make dialogue less natural. Some sound-effect settings prevent TV center-speaker output. See Sony’s HT-A7000 speaker settings.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →DRC and Advanced Auto Volume
Audio DRC compresses the difference between quiet speech and loud effects. Advanced Auto Volume evens out channels or advertisements. Use either only when you need consistent low-volume listening; both can make music and film dynamics less natural.
Rank #4
- 3.1.2CH SPATIAL SOUND: Hear cinematic spatial sound and deep bass with 3 front-firing speakers, dual up-firing speakers, and included wireless subwoofer.
- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Get the best streaming experience with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
- CLEAR DIALOGUE: Catch every word in the scene with dedicated center channel speaker.
- WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
- BRAVIA THEATER AND BRAVIA TV, THE PERFECT PAIR: Pair with compatible BRAVIA TVs to control the soundbar from the TV menu and take advantage of Voice Zoom 3 for enhanced dialogue.
Adjust bass, rears and height channels methodically
- Complete automatic optimization.
- Set a comfortable main volume.
- Raise or lower the subwoofer in small steps using speech, music and action scenes.
- Adjust rear levels only after confirming the source contains surround information.
- Change one control at a time and recheck after moving the subwoofer or seat.
Maximum bass commonly produces one-note boom, rattling and dialogue masking. A large increase is not a cure for a room bass null. Weak rears may reflect stereo content, restrained mixing, disabled Sound Field, Night mode, poor placement or wireless interference.
Verify speakers with a test tone
For newer models: BRAVIA Connect → My Devices → Settings → Sound Settings → Sound Output Check → Test Tone.
For many HT-A models: HOME → Setup → Advanced Settings → Speaker Settings → Manual Speaker Settings → Test Tone → On. If both rears pass the test but ordinary television does not use them, the source or mix is the likely explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesNight mode and volume normalization
Night mode is useful in apartments or late at night because it reduces bass peaks and loud explosions. The cost is less impact, contrast and convincing Atmos dynamics. Sony specifically advises checking that Night mode is off when the subwoofer or rears seem unusually quiet.
Best Value
- 5.1CH SURROUND SOUND: Hear cinematic surround sound and deep bass with 3 front-firing speakers, two rear speakers, and included subwoofer.
- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Get the best streaming experience with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
- CLEAR DIALOGUE: Catch every word in the scene with dedicated center channel speaker.
- ROOM FILLING SOUND: Multi Stereo enhances your listening experience by playing the same sound from all speakers, creating a room-filling sound boost.
- BRAVIA THEATER AND BRAVIA TV, THE PERFECT PAIR: Pair with compatible BRAVIA TVs to control the soundbar from the TV menu and take advantage of Voice Zoom 3 for enhanced dialogue.
Leave Night mode and aggressive DRC off for normal cinema listening. Turn them on only for a practical listening constraint, then disable them when full dynamics are wanted.

Fix common Sony soundbar problems
No sound or sound from both TV and bar
- Confirm the cable is in the TV’s HDMI eARC/ARC port and the bar’s HDMI OUT.
- Set TV output to the external audio system and enable HDMI-CEC.
- Power-cycle TV, bar and source to refresh the HDMI handshake.
- If both devices intentionally play, check whether Sony TV Center Speaker mode is enabled.
Atmos is missing
- Confirm the title, app and subscription actually provide Atmos.
- Set the source to bitstream/Atmos where offered.
- Use eARC when required and verify TV pass-through.
- Check the TV port, cable and soundbar format indicator.
- Remember that a surround effect does not prove native Atmos.
Wireless subwoofer or rear dropouts
- Confirm every speaker is powered and paired.
- Restart the bar and wireless speakers.
- Move them away from Wi-Fi routers, mesh nodes and cordless-phone bases.
- If available, test RF Channel off instead of Auto/On.
- Change Wireless Playback Quality from Sound Quality to Connection when stability matters more.
- Use manual linking and update firmware if automatic pairing fails.
RF Channel availability varies by model and region. Sony documents these controls in the HT-A7000 wireless settings guide.
Audio and video are out of sync
- Check whether every source is affected or only one app/device.
- Set TV eARC to Auto and check the soundbar’s A/V Sync control.
- Test the source through the TV, then directly through a compatible soundbar input.
- Disable unnecessary TV audio processing and update all firmware.
- If only wireless speakers lag or cut out, test wireless quality and interference.
Sony identifies eARC mode and A/V Sync as relevant controls, but menu paths vary: Sony audio/video synchronization support. Avoid adding a large manual delay before isolating the source; it may fix one app and worsen another.
Manual speaker settings worth using
Automatic calibration is a starting point. Manual distance, channel level, subwoofer level, rear level, test tone, TV position and wireless-quality controls help when the sofa is off-center, one rear is farther away, the bar is in a cabinet or the calibration microphone was placed unusually. Change one value, listen, and retain only an audible improvement.
When an upgrade makes sense
Buy a subwoofer when the soundstage is satisfying but bass lacks weight. Add rear speakers when bass is adequate but you want stronger immersion. Do not buy accessories to solve an HDMI handshake, incorrect TV output or failed pairing.
Sony’s U.S. listings viewed on August 18, 2026 showed the following prices; promotions can change:
| Product | Listed U.S. price | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 5 | $349.99 | Lower-cost Atmos bar with wireless subwoofer |
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 | $699.99 | 3.1.2 system with wireless subwoofer |
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 | $869.99; $1,099.99 with Sub 7 | Expandable midrange |
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 8 | $999.99 | Larger all-in-one option |
| BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 | $1,499.99 | Premium 13-speaker bar |
| BRAVIA Theatre Sub 7/8/9 | $329.99/$499.99/$899.99 | Increasing bass capability |
| BRAVIA Theatre Rear 8/9 | $499.99/$749.99 | Wireless rear and height expansion |
| BRAVIA Theatre Quad | $2,699.99 | 16-speaker system for room-filling surround |
Compatibility spans newer BRAVIA Theatre models and selected HT-A systems, but not every accessory works with every bar. Sony lists the Rear 9 at its official product page and describes compatibility with Theatre Trio, Bar 9/8/7 and HT-A7000/A5000/A3000. In a small room, the most expensive subwoofer or rear set may add less benefit than correct placement and calibration.
