Chrome Canary is reportedly testing biometric reauthentication before filling saved passwords, but the available evidence does not show that Chrome is copying one of Firefox for Android’s features. The best-documented Firefox feature in this comparison is Android extension support—a different capability entirely.
What Chrome is testing on Android
Android Central reported on October 2, 2026, that Chrome Canary included a flag called “Biometric reauth for password filling.” With the experiment enabled, Chrome may ask for a fingerprint, face unlock, or another supported device authentication method before filling a saved password. Android Central’s report describes a Canary test, not a feature confirmed for Chrome’s stable release.

What Firefox for Android offers
The documented Firefox feature is extension support. Mozilla invited developers and community members to test extensions in Firefox for Android Beta and Nightly in September 2023. The effort focused on popular desktop extensions compatible with Android’s mobile APIs. Mozilla’s announcement described testing and feedback, rather than a biometric password-filling feature.

A 2024 provisional report from the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said Chrome did not support extensions on Android at the time of its investigation, while Firefox and some other third-party browsers did. The CMA cited Firefox for Android 121.0, released in December 2023, as adding support for over 400 more extensions. Those are dated findings, not a current inventory of either browser’s extension support. The CMA report provides that historical comparison.

Why the two features should not be conflated
| Capability | Browser and channel in the sources | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Extensions | Firefox for Android Beta and Nightly in Mozilla’s 2023 testing announcement; Firefox 121.0 in the CMA’s 2024 report | Mozilla documented extension testing; the CMA recorded Firefox extension availability and cited over 400 more extensions added in Firefox 121.0. |
| Biometric reauthentication before password autofill | Chrome Canary, as reported October 2, 2026 | A Canary flag reportedly tests the prompt. The report does not establish stable-channel availability. |
Extensions add browser capabilities; biometric reauthentication adds an authentication step before a saved password is filled. The cited sources do not establish that Firefox for Android has the same biometric password-filling feature, or that Chrome’s Canary experiment is based on Firefox’s extension support.

What Android users can conclude
- If you want extensions, the CMA’s comparison is useful historical evidence, but check each browser’s current version and extension catalogue before choosing one.
- If you are asking whether Chrome stable now requires biometrics to autofill passwords, the cited report does not confirm that. It describes a Chrome Canary experiment.
- The claim that Chrome is testing one of Firefox’s “most controversial” mobile features is not substantiated by these sources: they describe two distinct capabilities.
