The exact controls differ between Android and iPhone, and sync can carry changes—including tab-group deletions—to your other signed-in devices.
1. Sign in to Chrome, then choose what to save and sync
Signing in with a Google Account makes selected Chrome information available on other devices using that account. Google lists bookmarks, Reading List, passwords, payment information, identity and contact information, settings, and preferences among information that may be saved. Chrome can also sync tabs and browsing history. You can choose what to save and sync; signing in does not mean every category is necessarily synced in every account state.

On Android, open Chrome and use the account or profile controls to sign in and manage sync. Google’s instructions for the available data and sync choices are in Get your bookmarks, passwords, and more on all your devices. On iPhone or iPad, use Chrome’s account controls to sign in; Google explains the account requirement and cross-device access in Sign in to Chrome.

If you enable a custom sync passphrase on Android, Google says it cannot read the Chrome data protected by that passphrase. It must be entered on signed-in devices, and some conveniences change: browsing-based feed suggestions are unavailable, saved passwords cannot be checked at passwords.google.com or used with Smart Lock for Passwords, and all history will not be saved to your Google Account. Google says the passphrase does not encrypt payment methods and addresses from Google Wallet. Review the consequences before enabling it rather than treating it as a universal privacy switch.

2. Group related tabs so active projects stay manageable
Tab groups are useful when several pages belong to one task: for example, collect flights, lodging, and activities in a group named “Trip planning.” Groups can have names and colors. Their behavior and controls vary slightly by platform.
Android
In Chrome’s tab switcher, you can create a group, name and color it, search tabs and groups, and use bulk actions. Group changes sync to devices signed into the same Google Account. That includes destructive changes: deleting a group removes it across those devices. Ungrouping also deletes the group elsewhere, although its individual tabs remain open on the device where you ungrouped them. See Google’s Android tab-management instructions.

iPhone and iPad
Chrome supports named, colored groups and automatically saves and syncs group changes among devices signed into the same Google Account. You can move tabs, bookmark a tab, or add one to Reading List from the tab grid; Chrome also has an Inactive Tabs section. If you want groups organized locally without automatically opening groups arriving from other devices, Google’s tab settings include an option to stop automatically opening them. Follow the iPhone and iPad tab instructions for the current controls.
3. Run Safety Check, then understand what its connection setting does
Safety Check reviews particular conditions, not every possible threat. On iPhone or iPad, open Chrome Settings > Safety check, then tap Check now. It reviews compromised, reused, or weak passwords, Safe Browsing status, and available Chrome updates; Chrome may also notify you when it finds issues. Both platforms also offer an Always use secure connections setting. Chrome attempts to use HTTPS and can warn before opening a site that does not support it. Android offers warning choices for public sites or for public and private sites; the latter can affect access to a company intranet. HTTPS provides a more secure connection than HTTP, but it does not prove that a site is legitimate or remove other risks. On Android, Google says Secure DNS is on by default in automatic mode, which may fall back to an unencrypted lookup if Chrome has trouble resolving a site.

Chrome on iPhone lets you choose a top or bottom address-bar position in portrait orientation. You can also move the bar by touching and holding it. In landscape, it remains at the top. The position can sync between iPhone and iPad when Settings sync is enabled. This is an iPhone and iPad option, not an Android setup instruction; Google describes it in Set up Chrome for iPhone or iPad.
