Match each feature to a recurring hassle: use tab groups for related work, split view for two-page tasks, reading mode for long articles, and Memory Saver when background tabs are using resources.
Organize a crowded tab bar
Use vertical tabs to scan page titles
When tab labels are squeezed into tiny slivers across the top of the window, vertical tabs put them in a side panel where more of each page title can show. Google said vertical tabs began rolling out in April 2026; availability can vary, so check that Chrome is up to date if the option is missing. Google’s announcement describes the feature.

Group tabs by the work they belong to
Right-click a tab and choose the option to add it to a new or existing group. Give groups names that help you decide what belongs together, such as a project, class, topic or task. If it suits your workflow, a group can also mark urgency or progress. Groups help cluster related pages; they do not replace bookmarks or save a separate copy of a page. See Google’s tab-groups guidance for the feature’s organizing approach.
Keep two pages visible with split view
Split view displays two tabs side by side in one browser window. It fits tasks where you need to refer to one page while working in another: keep a source beside a draft, documentation beside code, or a video beside notes. Google’s September 2026 study guidance says paired tabs stay linked so you can return to that workspace. Google’s February 2026 announcement presents split view as a built-in way to keep two tabs together.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
To start, use the tab’s context menu and choose the split-view option if it is available in your Chrome version. Add or select the second tab when prompted. The exact controls can vary as Chrome rolls out features; Google’s study guide illustrates a paired-tab workflow. Alex Tsu, a Chrome product manager, described split view as an “intuitive tool” intended to reduce back-and-forth tab switching. That is Google’s product description, not an independently measured time-saving result.
Read a page without its visual clutter
For an article or other text-heavy page, right-click the page and choose Open in reading mode. Chrome presents the text in a more focused view; Google says readers can adjust the font, letter spacing and contrast. The reading-mode option began rolling out in April 2026, so its absence may reflect availability or version differences rather than a setting you have overlooked. See Google’s feature announcement.

Mark up and file PDFs in Chrome
Open a PDF in Chrome’s built-in viewer to highlight passages and add notes without first moving the document into a separate editor. Google also announced a workflow to save PDFs directly to Drive in a dedicated Saved from Chrome folder. The announcement establishes the save destination, but not account-specific storage details; check the Drive account and available storage associated with your setup. The workflow is described in Google’s February 2026 Chrome announcement.

Choose how Chrome handles inactive tabs
Memory Saver
Memory Saver unloads inactive tabs to free memory; when you return to one, Chrome reloads it. This can help when a session has many open tabs, but it is not suitable for every background task: keep important sites active if their background activity matters. Google’s 2024 performance-controls post describes selectable modes and site exemptions, while its mode names differ from labels used in earlier posts. Rather than rely on an old menu path, open Chrome’s performance settings and confirm the current wording in your version. See Google’s October 2024 guidance.

- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Google’s 2022 announcement said Memory Saver could use “up to 40% and 10GB less memory.” That was Google’s claim at launch, not a guaranteed current saving for every device or browsing session. Google’s 2022 post also introduced Energy Saver, which it described as reducing background activity and visual effects when a laptop battery reaches 20%. Treat those details as the launch-era description, not a promise about current behavior in every Chrome version.

- Too many hard-to-identify tabs: try vertical tabs, then group pages by project or task.
- Repeatedly switching between two pages: put them together in split view.
- A distracting long article: open it in reading mode and adjust the text presentation.
- A large session of background tabs: review Memory Saver and exempt sites that need to stay active.
- PDFs that need review: annotate them in Chrome’s viewer and use the Drive save workflow if it is available in your setup.
