What is Chrome’s hidden AI model?
Chrome can download files for on-device generative AI features. A 2026 report identified a file named weights.bin in an OptGuideOnDeviceModel directory and estimated it at roughly 4GB; that is a reported instance, not a universal size or a file every Chrome user has. 9to5Google’s report describes the finding.

The model is stored on the device rather than installed as a separate app. Google says on-device models can support tasks such as writing or rephrasing text, scam warnings, webpage summaries and tab organization. Gemini Nano has been offered in Chrome since 2024; Google has described it as supporting security features and developer APIs, including Enhanced Protection’s identification of tech-support scams. Google’s September 2025 Chrome announcement describes that scam-detection use case.

Chrome downloads models only on eligible devices. Google says downloads may occur in the background or when a person first uses a feature that depends on a model. Its current help page lists an unmetered network connection, approximately 20GB of free disk space and sufficient device performance among the conditions; requirements may change. The downloaded model can make supported tasks run locally, but turning off the setting disables features that depend on these models. Some other Chrome AI features may continue to work because they do not rely on the on-device models.
Remove the model and prevent another download
- Open Chrome on the computer where the model is stored.
- Select More > Settings > AI innovations.
- Turn On-device AI off.
Google says this removes the local on-device generative AI model files and prevents Chrome from downloading them again while the setting stays off. If you switch it back on, Chrome may download models again when the required conditions are met. The setting applies separately to each user and device. Google Chrome Help identifies the setting as the supported way to manage these models.

If “On-device AI” is missing from Settings
Chrome’s control has not appeared identically in every reported installation. In May 2026, 9to5Google reported that it could not find the setting on one Mac running Chrome 147, although it was visible on a Windows installation running the same version. That is a dated observation, not a statement about current availability on all Macs or Windows PCs. Check the current Chrome Help page and your browser version before relying on older workarounds.
Google advises against manually locating and deleting model files: deleting a folder alone may not stop Chrome from downloading the models again. A third-party article published May 8, 2026 described disabling the optimization-guide-on-device-model and prompt-api-for-gemini-nano flags, relaunching Chrome, and then deleting the OptGuideOnDeviceModel folder on Windows or macOS. Android Authority’s dated workaround warns that a future Chrome update may reset the flags. This is not Google’s supported procedure, and it is not a durable guarantee that the files will stay gone.
