To turn on iOS 27’s Impersonation Risk Detection, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Impersonation Risk Detection, then enable Share with App Developers. Apple says you may need to sign in to the App Store with your Apple Account. The feature is available starting with iOS 27 and works only with apps that support it.

How do I turn on Impersonation Risk Detection?

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down and tap Impersonation Risk Detection.
  4. Turn on Share with App Developers. If prompted, sign in to the App Store with your Apple Account.

That setting lets a participating app request a risk assessment when it considers an action potentially risky. It does not make every app use the feature.

What does the iPhone anti-scam feature do?

When a user tries an action that could be targeted during a social-engineering scam, a supporting app can ask iOS for a risk assessment. Apple gives examples such as making a payment or changing important account security information, including a password. The app receives one of three levels: Unknown, Medium, or High.

The app—not Apple—decides how to respond. It may show a warning, ask you to verify your identity, or add a delay before you continue. Apple says it does not determine or control the app’s response.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Mist Blue- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Unknown: No suspicious evidence was detected. This is not confirmation that the action is safe.
  • Medium or High: The assessment indicates a level of risk; the app chooses what action, if any, to take.

This is an app-requested risk signal, not a system-wide scam filter. It does not, on the evidence Apple describes, scan every call, message, website, or payment, and it should not be treated as an automatic scam blocker. Apple’s published support material does not give an independently measured detection rate, false-positive rate, or amount of fraud prevented.

Where is the anti-scam setting, and why might it be missing?

The control is in Settings > Privacy & Security > Impersonation Risk Detection. Apple says the feature is available starting with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, and only apps that support it can request assessments. If you do not see the setting, check which iOS version is installed and whether your device has updated to iOS 27 or later.

Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Silver- Unlocked (Renewed Premium)

  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.

Apple’s reviewed guidance does not specify eligible iPhone models or regional availability, so the setting’s presence should not be inferred from a model or location list.

How can I review app requests or turn off access?

In the Impersonation Risk Detection settings, Recent Activity shows apps that requested assessments. Reasons for Access shows the actions that prompted a request. Open an individual app’s entry to turn off its access.

Apple says a change to the overall setting or to an individual app’s access can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Apple also cautions: “If someone directs you to turn this feature off, you might be the victim of a scam.”

What does Apple say about privacy?

Apple’s published description says the feature analyzes interaction patterns, timing, context, and basic sensor data on the device. Apple says it does not receive the data used to generate the risk level, does not analyze Photos, Messages, or Mail content for this feature, and shares only the risk level with the requesting app. Apple also says it learns the type of action being attempted when an app requests an assessment. These are Apple’s stated design and privacy claims.

How is this different from other iPhone protections?

Protection Threat or purpose Where it operates What you may see
Impersonation Risk Detection Potential social-engineering scams involving an action in a participating app An app requests a risk assessment from iOS The app may warn you, ask for identity verification, or delay the action
Stolen Device Protection Someone has stolen the iPhone and knows its passcode Device and Apple Account security controls For certain sensitive operations, Face ID or Touch ID is required without a passcode fallback; some operations can also involve a one-hour security delay and a second biometric check
Safari Safe Browsing and iOS updates Known malicious URL domains and software vulnerabilities Safari web protection and the iOS update process Safari Safe Browsing blocks malicious URL domains identified in the attacks Apple discusses; updates address software vulnerabilities

These protections address different situations. Stolen Device Protection is not the same as an app-requested scam-risk assessment, and Safari’s web protections do not replace either one.
