If you want a one-off full-page screenshot without writing code, Firefox Developer Tools has a built-in capture button. For repeatable captures in a script, use Playwright or Puppeteer. Choose based on whether you need a quick manual action or an automated workflow—and whether you want to capture the whole page or a particular element.

For a simple manual capture, start with Firefox. If capture needs to run repeatedly or as part of a test or script, Playwright and Puppeteer expose browser screenshot APIs. The official documentation describes their capabilities but does not establish comparative speed, fidelity, or reliability, so those should not be assumed.
Capture a full page in Firefox without a script
- Open Firefox Developer Tools.
- Open Developer Tools Settings and find Available Toolbox Buttons.
- Check Take a screenshot of the entire page. The screenshot icon appears in the toolbox.
- Click the screenshot icon. Firefox saves the full-page image to Downloads.
For additional control, open the Web Console and use Firefox’s :screenshot helper. Its documented options include --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, --clipboard, --file and --filename. For example, enter :screenshot --fullpage --filename page.png to request a full-page capture with a chosen filename. Firefox notes that reusing a filename overwrites the earlier capture. Consult Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot documentation for the helper’s syntax and options; it says that a delay, device-pixel ratio or custom filename can be set with the helper.
Capture the full scrollable page with Playwright
Playwright’s Page API sets fullPage to false by default. Set it to true to capture the full scrollable page rather than just the visible viewport. This Node.js example navigates to a page and writes a PNG:

- Image type: PNG, JPEG or WebP.
- Scale: CSS pixels or device pixels. Device-pixel scaling can make high-DPI images twice as large or larger than CSS-scale captures.
- Masking: mask selected locators in the screenshot.
- Styling: apply a stylesheet for repeatable screenshots.
- Output: choose a save location with
path.

Capture a page or element with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows a page capture after navigation and an element capture with ElementHandle.screenshot(). The following example saves the full page in PNG format:

When to capture an element instead of the whole page
A full-page screenshot is useful when the entire document matters. If you only need a specific section, an element capture can avoid including unrelated page content. The tools expose this differently: Firefox’s console helper accepts --selector for an element and its descendants; Playwright supports element screenshots and locator masking; Puppeteer provides ElementHandle.screenshot(). Choose the target deliberately, since an element image is not a substitute for a record of the complete page.

Troubleshooting and practical limits
- The Firefox screenshot button is missing: enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Developer Tools Settings → Available Toolbox Buttons.
- A Firefox capture overwrote an earlier file: the helper overwrites when a filename is reused. Choose a different
--filenamefor each capture. - The Playwright image shows only the viewport: confirm the screenshot call includes
fullPage: true; the documented default isfalse. - A Puppeteer element capture fails to find a target: verify the selector matches an element after navigation. The example checks for a missing
mainelement before trying to capture it. - The file is much larger than expected: check the selected scale. Playwright notes that device-pixel captures can be at least twice the size of CSS-scale captures.
- A page’s appearance differs from your intended capture: use documented screenshot controls such as delay, device-pixel ratio or selector in Firefox, and styling, masking or scale controls in Playwright where appropriate. The cited documentation does not provide comparative guarantees for difficult or dynamic sites.
