Use Chrome DevTools for a quick, manual capture of the page you are inspecting. Use Playwright when screenshots need to be repeatable, automated, targeted at an element, or checked against visual baselines. Neither workflow guarantees pixel-identical results across different browser and machine setups.
How the two screenshot workflows differ
| Need | Chrome DevTools | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Capture the current viewport | In Device Mode, choose More options > Capture screenshot. | Call page.screenshot(). By default, it captures the visible viewport rather than the full page. |
| Capture the full page | Choose Capture a full size screenshot. | Pass fullPage: true. |
| Capture a region or element | The Device Mode guide documents viewport and full-size captures, but does not establish a node-capture method there. | Use the clip option for a region or a locator’s screenshot() method for an element. |
| Repeat captures automatically | The documented menu workflow is interactive and manual. | Write a script to capture on demand or as part of browser automation. |
| Compare against a visual baseline | The cited capture guide does not describe a screenshot-baseline testing workflow. | Playwright Test can save reference screenshots and compare later runs. |
This compares the documented workflows; it is not proof that DevTools has no other screenshot capabilities. For technical protocol-level capture options, see the Chrome DevTools Protocol Page documentation.
When Chrome DevTools is the better choice
DevTools is the straightforward option when you are already inspecting a page and want an image of its current state without writing or maintaining a script.
- Open the page and, if needed, use Device Mode to set the simulated viewport.
- Open the Device Mode More options menu.
- Choose Capture screenshot for what is visible, or Capture a full size screenshot for the page beyond the viewport.
- If you want the device frame in the image, enable Show device frame before capturing.
Device Mode also groups viewport simulation with CPU and network throttling and sensor emulation. It is not a physical-phone test: Chrome for Developers says, “Think of device mode as a first-order approximation of how your page looks and feels on a mobile device.” The page code runs on the desktop or laptop, not on the simulated handset. See Chrome’s Device Mode guide.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When Playwright is the better choice
Choose Playwright when the screenshot itself is part of a repeatable workflow: an automated test, a scheduled capture, a component check, or a pipeline that needs image bytes rather than a manually saved file.
Viewport and full-page captures
page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport unless you enable full-page capture. With fullPage: true, Playwright captures the full scrollable page. The Page API supports returning image bytes or saving to a path, along with format and quality settings, clipping, masking, transparency, scale, and animation handling.

Region and element captures
Use clip when you need a rectangular portion of the page. Use a locator’s screenshot() method when the target is a specific component, such as a product card or navigation bar. The Playwright screenshot guide includes examples of full-page, buffer, and locator-level screenshots.
Visual regression checks
Playwright Test can create reference screenshots and compare later runs against them. That is useful for detecting unexpected visual changes, but a pixel difference is meaningful only when the capture environment is controlled. Playwright warns that host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors can change rendering. Its visual comparisons guide recommends running tests in the same environment used to create the baseline.

Making DevTools and Playwright captures comparable
Do not assume that two screenshots will match pixel for pixel just because they show the same URL. Align the conditions that affect what is rendered and how it is rasterized:
- Use the same browser engine and version.
- Set the same viewport width and height.
- Match device pixel ratio or screenshot scale. Playwright’s
scalecan use CSS pixels or device pixels; device-scale output can be larger on high-DPI configurations. - Capture the same page state, including scroll position, loaded content, animations, and any open menus or dialogs.
- Keep the host OS and execution mode consistent, including headless versus headed runs.
These are practical controls inferred from the documented capture settings and rendering variability, not a guarantee that every remaining source of difference can be eliminated. Playwright’s documented defaults include fullPage: false, scale: "device", and animations allowed.
