To back up Chrome bookmarks without Sync, export them from Chrome’s desktop Bookmark Manager as an HTML file. Save that file somewhere you can find, and keep a second copy on separate storage if you need protection against losing the computer. To restore the bookmarks later, import the HTML file through Chrome’s bookmark import flow.
Export Chrome bookmarks to an HTML file
- In desktop Chrome, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager.
- In Bookmark Manager, open More > Export Bookmarks.
- Choose where to save the HTML file. Give it a recognizable name and note its location so you can find it for a later restore.
Google confirms that “Chrome exports your bookmarks as an HTML file.” The file is a portable copy you can store separately from your Chrome profile; exporting does not require special hardware. Google Chrome Help: Import Chrome bookmarks & settings.

Keep the backup somewhere you can still access
A file saved only on the computer it came from will not help if that computer is lost or its storage fails. For more resilience, keep another copy on separate storage, such as a USB drive. Google documents the HTML export but does not prescribe a particular backup destination or require a drive.
- One copy on the computer: convenient for a quick restore on the same device, but it shares the computer’s risk.
- A second copy on separate storage: makes the backup available if the original computer is unavailable; you must keep track of where the file is stored.
Restore bookmarks from the HTML file
- In Chrome, open More > Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings.
- Select the saved bookmarks HTML file and complete the import.
- Open the imported bookmarks folder or bookmarks bar and check that the expected items are there.
If Chrome already has bookmarks, Google says the imported items are placed in a new Other bookmarks folder at the end of the bookmarks bar. If there are no existing bookmarks, imported items appear in the bookmarks bar. Check the expected destination before assuming an import did not work. How a file backup differs from Chrome Sync
Sync connects Chrome data to a Google Account for access across devices. A manual export instead gives you a separate HTML file to keep and import yourself. Google says bookmarks remain on the device when you sign out of Chrome; they are not then saved in the Google Account. Google Chrome Help: Get your bookmarks, passwords, and more on all your devices.
Google Account data export may also include bookmarks, but Google notes that some data from work or school accounts may not be available for download. Treat it as a conditional account-data option, not a guaranteed substitute for the local Bookmark Manager export. Google Chrome Help: Export your data from Chrome.
