Choose Loki if you want to keep reference images in your repository and control the browser or simulator environment yourself. Both compare Storybook stories against visual baselines; neither removes the need to cover the right states and review changes.
How the two screenshot-testing workflows work
Chromatic: cloud rendering and hosted review
Chromatic treats Storybook stories as visual tests. Its CLI builds and uploads Storybook to Chromatic’s cloud; later builds are compared with accepted baselines, and reviewers inspect detected changes in hosted build review. See Chromatic’s visual testing documentation and Quickstart.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For CI, Chromatic documents saving a project token as a secret and running its CLI or a supported integration. Linked GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket repositories can receive pull-request status checks. Confirm that the integration works with your repository permissions and CI provider: the behavior is documented by Chromatic, not an independent guarantee for every setup. See Automate with CI.
The Storybook Visual Tests addon supports on-demand runs from the Storybook interface and syncs accepted baselines to the cloud. Chromatic describes its local builds as builds of uncommitted code; baseline changes from those builds remain limited to the developer’s local builds until committed work triggers CI. The addon supports TurboSnap, but Chromatic says it does not replace CI. Its addon documentation requires Storybook 7.6 or later; the CLI Quickstart separately says Storybook 6.5 or later, so check the requirement for the specific integration you intend to use. See Visual Tests addon.

Loki: project-managed references and rendering
Loki is installed as a project development dependency and initialized in the project. Its documented flow is to start Storybook, capture initial reference images, run comparisons after changes, inspect current and difference images, and approve intentional updates. By default, references go in a loki folder and are committed with the project; Git LFS is an option for storing them. See Loki’s getting-started guide.
Loki does not start Storybook for you. The getting-started guide requires Storybook—and any simulator or emulator under test—to be running. Loki’s project materials describe Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulators, and Android emulators as targets. They also list Node 16+ and optional dependencies for some targets. These are documented requirements and examples, not confirmation that every current release supports every combination; verify compatibility for the release and target you plan to use. See the Loki repository.
For CI, Loki documents building Storybook and passing the static output to Loki. Its guide recommends --requireReference so CI fails if a required reference image is missing. The team supplies and maintains the browser environment, baseline files, and approval workflow. See Loki’s continuous-integration guide.

Chromatic vs Loki: the practical differences
| Decision | Chromatic | Loki |
|---|---|---|
| Where snapshots render | Chromatic cloud, according to its documentation | Local or configured CI browser or simulator target |
| Where baselines live | Hosted; accepted baselines sync through Chromatic | Reference image files maintained with the project by default |
| How changes are reviewed | Hosted build review, Storybook addon, and documented pull-request checks | Inspect current and difference images, then approve reference updates |
| CI relationship | Documented CI integrations; the addon provides on-demand feedback and complements CI | CI can run against a built Storybook with required references |
| Infrastructure ownership | Less browser setup for the team, with an external cloud service | The team maintains Storybook, browser or simulator setup, and baseline artifacts |
| Compatibility checks | Distinguish CLI and addon Storybook requirements and verify the current integration docs | Verify Node, Storybook, browser, and simulator compatibility for the release |
This is a workflow comparison based on project documentation, not an independent benchmark of price, speed, browser coverage, or reliability. The documentation cited here does not establish a fair current-price comparison; check each project’s current pricing and limits before deciding on cost.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Chromatic when hosted review matters most
- You prefer not to own and maintain the browser-rendering setup for screenshot comparisons.
- Your team wants hosted baseline review and documented pull-request checks.
- You want an on-demand Storybook addon workflow alongside CI, rather than treating the addon as a CI replacement.
Choose Loki when repository ownership and control matter most
- You want reference images maintained alongside the project and reviewed through its development workflow.
- Your team can keep Storybook and the selected browser, simulator, or emulator environment running and compatible.
- You want CI to compare against committed reference images, with missing references able to fail the run.
Whichever you select, the decision is not a substitute for visual-test design. Stories need to represent the states that matter, and a person still needs to decide whether a changed screenshot is intentional.
Reduce flaky screenshot comparisons
Animation and asynchronous rendering can make screenshots timing-sensitive. Loki’s troubleshooting guide specifically calls out looping requestAnimationFrame, GIFs, SVG animations, and React Native’s Animated library as limitations. It describes disabling common CSS transitions and requestAnimationFrame, while noting that asynchronous content may require explicit completion handling. See Handling flaky tests.

- ❤❤(3)POA-3H Power quality analyzer adopt DSP + ARM double processor architecture, DSP is use for data collection and the processing of algorithm, the ARM is use for the communication protocol and the man-machine interface processing; Analog signal acquisition is by 2 pieces AD7655 of ADI company.
- ❤❤(4)Using a 5.6 -inch LCD color screen display, a resolution of 640 dots x 480 dots, with different display color difference between the parameters of phase, waveform, vector diagram, harmonic ratio, the user can be more efficient and more intuitive understand the state of power grid parameters.
- ❤❤(5)Built-in flash memory can store 60 group of screenshots at the same time, 150 groups of capture transient voltage/current waveform figure, and 12800 groups of alarm list. Built-in 2G memory card to store the trend curve record, simultaneous recording 20 parameters (can choose according to need) collect data for once every five seconds, trend curve records can be stored for 300 days.
- Use stable test data, fonts, viewport dimensions, and animation states so unrelated changes do not alter images.
- For animated or asynchronously loaded content, provide a deterministic state or wait for completion rather than relying on capture timing.
- Review changes rather than automatically accepting every new baseline; a changed image can represent either a regression or an intended design update.
Chromatic describes standardized cloud rendering and automated handling of loading, paint, and reflow on its product pages. Those are vendor descriptions, not an independently measured flake rate; they do not establish that every application will render identically on every run.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →ScreenshotNeo: an alternative for capturing pages outside Storybook
Chromatic and Loki are designed around Storybook stories and visual baselines. If you also need screenshots or PDFs of ordinary web pages through an API, try ScreenshotNeo. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Storybook visual-test review.
One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
It also supports full-page and CSS-selector captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, wait conditions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture, a usage API, and an OpenAPI spec. Its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs to ease migration. These website-capture options do not turn it into a Storybook baseline system.
