Free includes 5,000 billed snapshots a month, Starter 35,000, and Pro 85,000. Chromatic says it does not charge per seat, so a small team should choose based on snapshot use and required browser coverage—not headcount. Chromatic’s self-serve plans bill monthly on the subscription date, and its billing documentation says annual payment is not currently supported. Plan changes are prorated by day. Chromatic billing documentation
Does Chromatic charge per user?
No. Chromatic says it does not charge per seat, and its Free plan lists unlimited users or collaborators. Team members still need the appropriate project permissions to access work. In practical terms, adding a developer does not itself multiply the subscription price; the account’s billed snapshot use and plan requirements are the main cost drivers. Chromatic’s permissions FAQ
How to choose a plan for a small team
Free: Chrome is enough and use fits the allowance
Choose Free when Chrome testing meets your needs and the account is likely to remain within 5,000 billed snapshots per month. The plan has no trial period and does not expire. Once the allowance is used, review and testing pause until the monthly reset or an upgrade.
Starter: cross-browser coverage
Starter is the first listed plan that includes Safari, Firefox, and Edge testing. Compare its $179 monthly price and 35,000 included snapshots with your forecast; if billed usage exceeds the allowance, Starter lists $0.008 for each additional billed snapshot.
Pro: custom domain or more included snapshots
Pro lists a custom domain and 85,000 included snapshots for $399 per month. That is $220 more per month than Starter. Whether the difference is worthwhile depends on needing the custom domain, the larger included allowance, or both—not on the plan label.

Enterprise pricing is custom. Its listed differentiators include SSO, custom Git integrations, priority support and SLA, data retention, and unlimited accessibility usage. Ask Chromatic for a quote if one of those requirements makes a self-serve plan unsuitable.
Estimate snapshot use before subscribing
Snapshot demand depends on what the team tests and how often it builds, not just the number of collaborators. Chromatic counts captured visual or accessibility snapshots as billed usage; multiple browsers, devices, modes, and accessibility tests can raise the total. Interaction tests do not incur billed snapshots. Usage is aggregated across projects in the account.
- Captured: one captured visual or accessibility snapshot counts as 1 billed snapshot.
- Copied TurboSnap: a copied snapshot counts as 0.2 billed snapshots.
- Bypassed: a qualifying bypassed snapshot counts as 0.
TurboSnap can narrow snapshots to tests affected by changes. A build with no changes in any test dependency may be bypassed, but an unchanged-looking commit does not automatically qualify. Chromatic’s August 2026 changelog says bypassed builds require TurboSnap and Chromatic CLI 17.7.0 or later, and eligibility also depends on conditions including the dependency graph and ancestor builds. Review the billing guide and August 2026 changelog for the applicable rules.
Rank #4
- Estimate monthly builds and the number of components or stories tested in each.
- Account for browser, device, and mode combinations, plus visual and accessibility testing.
- Consider how TurboSnap changes which snapshots run, without assuming every unchanged build is bypassed.
- Combine activity across all projects in the account, then compare the resulting estimate with each plan’s included allowance.
- For paid plans, include likely overage charges and use Chromatic’s usage reports and billing alerts to monitor actual consumption.
What happens when you reach the limit?
On Free, review and testing pause when the 5,000-snapshot monthly allowance is exhausted; they resume after the allowance resets or after upgrading. On paid plans, review and testing continue, and excess billed snapshots are charged at the listed $0.008 each on Starter and Pro. Check the account’s usage reports and alerts rather than treating the base subscription price as a guaranteed monthly total. Free-plan limit details and billing rules

Plan-name caveat for older pricing references
Chromatic’s billing documentation says its former Standard plan was renamed Pro in September 2025. The older Legacy Pro plan is no longer available to new customers, although existing subscribers can retain it while they remain subscribed. Older reviews and cached pages may therefore describe plan names or terms that do not match current public pricing. Chromatic billing documentation

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative screenshot API
Chromatic is priced around visual and accessibility testing snapshots within its workflow. If the specific need is to generate website screenshots or PDFs through an API or an AI-agent MCP server, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
ScreenshotNeo is a different kind of tool, not a replacement for Chromatic’s visual testing plan. It offers 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
