Neither WordPress.com nor WP Engine is the automatic winner in 2026. Choose WordPress.com if you want a hosted WordPress platform with routine management included and a plan that covers your plugin, storage, and developer needs. Choose WP Engine if its site-capacity tiers, staging and development workflow, and WordPress-focused support suit your project. The right comparison is between the specific plans you would buy—not just the two brands.

How the two services differ

Both offer managed WordPress hosting, but they package it differently. WordPress.com combines hosting and platform features, with capabilities varying by plan. Its plan guide says hosting, automatic updates, unlimited pages, posts and users, basic recent traffic statistics, and basic security features are included across plans; plugins are available on paid plans. See the WordPress.com plan guide.

WP Engine focuses on WordPress hosting. Its plan materials describe managed WordPress and PHP updates, backups, caching, staging, a CDN, and support, with site capacity and some features depending on tier. Review the current WP Engine plan details for the plan you are considering.

Compare plans on the factors that affect your site

Decision factor WordPress.com WP Engine What to check
Management Hosting and automatic updates are presented as platform inclusions; features vary by plan. Plan materials describe managed updates, backups, caching, staging, and support. Which maintenance tasks you expect the host to handle, and which your selected plan actually includes.
Price Displayed prices vary by billing term and location; a lower monthly equivalent may require paying for a longer term up front. Tiered plan prices and renewal schedules differ; promotions and renewals may not match. First-term total, renewal price, billing term, currency, taxes, add-ons, and any excess-use charges.
Capacity The hosting page describes traffic as unmetered; storage and features vary by plan. Plans list site, visit, storage, and bandwidth figures; the visit counts are estimates. How the plan treats traffic spikes, storage, site count, and usage beyond listed figures.
Developer workflow The plan guide lists SFTP/SSH, database management, custom code, and staging as Business-plan capabilities. Plan materials describe staging and development environments. Required access, number of environments, deployment workflow, and plan restrictions.
Support Support is included with paid plans; details depend on plan. WP Engine advertises 24/7 WordPress technical support. Support hours and channels, escalation, and whether support covers your issue.

What do the plans cost, including renewal?

Prices are volatile, and the figures below are vendor-published U.S.-dollar amounts from the cited pages, not a quote for every location or checkout. Compare the total due for your chosen billing term with the renewal amount before you commit.

WordPress.com

Its hosting page lists Personal at US$9 per month with monthly billing, US$4 per month with annual billing, US$3.25 per month on a two-year term, or US$2.75 per month on a three-year term. The longer-term numbers are displayed monthly equivalents, not the total cost for the term. Billing and auto-renewal caveats apply, and local checkout pricing may differ. Check the current WordPress.com hosting prices before purchase.

WP Engine

The plans page lists Essential Startup at US$30 per month, alongside higher tiers. Separately, WP Engine’s updated pricing notice lists core plan renewal prices effective for renewals on or after March 11, 2026: Startup US$35, Professional US$65, Growth US$130, and Scale US$330. These are different pricing contexts; do not treat the plan-page figure as the renewal amount. Confirm the plan, billing term, promotion, and renewal total that apply to your account.

How much capacity do you need?

WP Engine’s plan page lists Startup for one site, with an estimated 25,000 visits per month, 10 GB of local storage, and 75 GB of monthly bandwidth. WP Engine expressly describes visit figures as estimates, not guaranteed hard caps. Its page says: “Visits/mo are estimates only. If you have traffic spikes, or a dynamic website, contact us before purchasing.” Higher tiers list increased site and capacity allowances. Review the provider’s current plan limits and terms for your expected usage.

WordPress.com describes traffic as unmetered, but storage and functionality vary by plan. If you expect a large media library, traffic spikes, or multiple sites, compare the selected plan’s storage and feature limits with your needs rather than relying on the headline traffic description. See its plan feature guide.

Which one fits your workflow?

Choose WordPress.com when

  • You prefer hosting and routine WordPress management in one platform.
  • Your selected tier includes the plugins and storage your site needs.
  • You need developer access or staging and have confirmed those features are included on your plan.

Choose WP Engine when

  • You want a WordPress-specialist host with plan tiers expressed in site and capacity allowances.
  • Staging and development environments are important to your workflow.
  • The plan’s support offering and capacity suit the project at a cost you accept.

For an agency or freelancer managing client sites, compare multi-site pricing and the handoff workflow instead of multiplying the price of a single-site plan. WordPress.com says agencies and freelancers with six or more clients can access discounted pricing, referral commissions, and a customized dashboard; check its current eligibility and terms in the plan guide.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

WP Engine’s platform page reports 5B+ global platform requests processed daily, 244B+ malicious requests blocked at the edge in Q1 2026, and 99.99% uptime. These are WP Engine’s own company-reported figures, not independent measurements comparing it with WordPress.com. The available plan and support information also does not establish which provider is faster, more reliable, or better at resolving support cases. Read vendor claims as descriptions of each service, not as a head-to-head performance verdict. See WP Engine’s platform information and its WordPress support page.
