Choose the color that contrasts with everything you need to keep in the shot: wardrobe, hair, props and visible scenery. Use blue when green clothing or outdoor foliage must remain visible, or when a darker scene or close setup makes green spill harder to manage. Whichever color you use, an evenly lit, wrinkle-free screen and space between the subject and backdrop usually matter more than chasing a supposedly perfect shade.
How to choose between green and blue
A chroma key removes a selected range of color from an image. The common phrase “green screen” describes a familiar workflow, not a requirement that every key use green. Adobe notes that the key can target a specific color; green and blue are popular choices because they often separate from skin tones, hair and clothing.

Green is generally more luminous than blue, which can make a bright background easier to work with when you have enough light. Blue may be a better fit for darker scenes or when reflected color on the subject is a concern. These are practical tradeoffs, not guarantees: assess the actual camera, lighting, subject and intended composite together. Adobe’s guide to blue versus green screen discusses these factors.

For outdoor shots, Adobe recommends blue when trees and grass are in frame, and green when a large body of water is present. For any setup, test a short clip with the actual wardrobe, props, lighting and replacement background before recording a full take; no single color or shade is right for every shot.

Prepare the frame and backdrop
Choose a color that will not remove part of the shot
Before setting up, list the clothing, hair, props and scene elements that must remain visible. Pick the key color that conflicts with the fewest of them. If a green shirt or prop is essential, switch to blue or change the item rather than expecting the keyer to distinguish it from the background.
Cover everything the camera sees
Make the backdrop large enough to fill the entire area behind the subject in the camera frame. If an uncovered wall or corner appears, it may need separate masking during editing. A large screen can simplify framing; filmmaker Colin Dougan’s tip, quoted by Adobe, is to “make sure you’ve got a very large one.”

Keep the surface smooth and taut
Fabric is usable when it is stretched tightly and kept free of folds. Wrinkles create shadows and uneven color that can make a clean key more difficult. Adobe also describes nylon or spandex and chroma-key paint as options for achieving a smooth, consistent surface. Adobe’s green-screen guide covers backdrop materials and preparation.
Light the screen and subject separately
Even illumination helps the keyer see a more consistent background color. Treat the screen and the subject as separate lighting jobs: light the backdrop evenly, then light the subject for the desired appearance. Diffused, nondirectional light can reduce harsh shadows and bright-to-dark patches. For smaller setups, Adobe mentions LED panels and ring lights as possible options.

Adobe quotes production head Mitch Apley recommending that the screen be “evenly lit” at “about 40 to 50 per cent luminance.” This is attributed practical guidance, not a universal measured target; the appropriate exposure depends on the scene and equipment. Check the captured image for visible shadows or variation rather than treating that number as a rule.
Give the subject room to reduce color spill
Keep the subject away from the backdrop when the room allows. Distance makes it easier to light the screen without affecting the subject and can reduce green or blue reflected onto hair, skin or clothing. Elgato’s support guidance also recommends separation, but any distance it gives for its setup should not be treated as a universal requirement for different rooms and cameras. If you still see a colored fringe after keying, use spill suppression in your editing software and inspect the result around skin tones, hair and fine edges. Spill suppression is a cleanup step, not a substitute for a suitable key color, even lighting and subject separation.

Key the footage and check the edges
- Record a test clip. Include the subject’s normal movement and any props that must remain. Check that the backdrop covers the full camera frame and appears reasonably even.
- Select the background color in your editor. Sample the screen color with the chroma-key effect, then adjust the key so the background is removed without cutting into the subject. Adobe’s Ultra Key documentation explains color selection and spill suppression in Premiere.
- Inspect difficult areas. Look closely at hair, fine or semi-transparent edges, clothing and props. If a green or blue fringe remains, adjust spill suppression and review the edge again against the intended background.
- Fix the cause if cleanup damages the image. If suppression changes skin tones or removes details, improve the lighting, increase subject-to-screen separation, or reconsider the screen color before recording more footage.
Spill occurs when the background color reflects onto the subject, particularly around semi-transparent or fine edges. Blackmagic Design’s Fusion 9 manual describes spill suppression as a way to address this edge color; its guidance is specific to that version of Fusion. Fix common green-screen problems
- Clothing or a prop disappears: The key color is also present in an element you want to keep. Change to the other color or change the wardrobe or prop.
- The background has dark patches: Smooth and tension the fabric, then adjust diffused screen lighting to reduce wrinkles and shadows.
- A colored fringe remains around the subject: Increase separation if possible and use the editor’s spill-suppression controls. Check that cleanup has not altered skin tones or fine edges.
- Backdrop corners show in the frame: Use a larger screen or reframe the camera view so the background covers the full shot.
