The transmitter takes HDMI from the source; the receiver sends HDMI to the TV. The cable may carry a dedicated HDBaseT or proprietary signal, so an RJ45 plug does not mean the link can use your router or ordinary network.
Which kind of Ethernet-to-HDMI device do you need?
The phrase describes two different jobs. For a console in one room and a TV in another, the usual fit is a point-to-point HDMI extender: source HDMI goes into the transmitter, a Cat5e/Cat6 cable connects the transmitter and receiver, and the receiver’s HDMI output connects to the display. Monoprice’s 2011 manual for one HDBaseT system shows this arrangement and distinguishes the HDBaseT link from separate Ethernet ports for network devices.

A different product decodes video already traveling as a network stream. For example, SIYI describes an Ethernet-to-HDMI converter for RTSP video streams, while Blackmagic Design’s 2110 IP Mini is for monitoring SMPTE 2110 IP video over 10G Ethernet. Neither is established as a direct HDMI-input extender for an ordinary console.
Do not assume the Cat cable is ordinary LAN
An RJ45 connector describes the physical socket, not the signal or network compatibility. Some extender ports carry a dedicated point-to-point HDBaseT or proprietary link. Connecting such a port to a home router or switch may not work and should only be done if the exact product documentation permits it. Other systems support HDMI-over-IP and require a specific switch-based setup. Follow the kit’s manual rather than relying on the cable connector alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the published product examples establish
These examples illustrate different extender capabilities; they are not an independently tested ranking or a claim that every kit will achieve the same distance.
| Example | Published capability | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cable Matters HDMI Extender over Ethernet with Local Loopout & TCP/IP Support, product ID 103202 | Cable Matters states transmission up to 492 feet (150 meters) over Cat6 and up to 1080p. It also describes expansion to as many as 255 displays. | The page is undated and was accessed in 2026. The 255-display configuration uses additional receiver boxes and a dedicated unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch; it is not a generic point-to-point promise. Confirm the exact product variant and installation conditions. |
| Monoprice manual 8123 | The 2011 manual describes an HDBaseT sender/receiver system over Cat5e/Cat6 and extension “to 100m.” | The distance and topology apply to that documented product, not to extenders generally. The manual says the sender’s link LED indicates an HDBaseT connection between sender and receiver over Cat5e/6. |
| WyreStorm RX-70-POH | Crutchfield lists 1080p up to 70 meters and 4K Ultra HD up to 35 meters, with HDCP 2.2 and HDR support. | These are figures from an undated Crutchfield listing accessed in 2026. The receiver requires a compatible transmitter, and the listing says it is no longer available there; treat it as a specification example, not a current buying recommendation. |
Vendors and retailers state these figures; they are not independent measurements or universal distance guarantees. Actual compatibility depends on the complete kit, cable, source, display, and operating mode.

How to choose an extender for a modern TV or gaming console
Start with the mode you actually need at the full cable length. “4K” alone does not tell you whether a kit can handle a particular refresh rate, HDR format, or gaming feature. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact transmitter and receiver combination.
Recommended Free Tools
- Resolution and refresh rate: Confirm the supported resolution and refresh rate at your intended distance, not just a headline maximum. A long-run 1080p specification does not establish 4K support.
- HDCP and source compatibility: Check the required HDCP version for protected content and confirm support for your console, receiver, and TV combination.
- HDR and color bandwidth: Verify HDR support and the stated color format or bandwidth for the mode you plan to use. A bare “4K” claim is not enough to establish these details.
- Gaming features and latency: Look for explicit documentation of VRR, ALLM, and latency. Do not infer support from “gaming” in a product description.
- Audio and control: Check audio passthrough or extraction, and whether you need IR, CEC, or USB control to operate equipment from the other room.
- Cable and installation: Confirm required cable category, shielding, and wiring conditions. The stated maximum distance is model- and mode-specific.
- Power and topology: Find out whether both ends need local power or whether the kit supports power over HDBaseT/PoH/PoC. Check whether the Cat link is point-to-point or requires a dedicated switch.
- Support and availability: Verify the exact revision, warranty, current stock, and support documentation before purchase.
The Cable Matters page cited above specifies up to 1080p, so it does not establish 4K/120, VRR, or ALLM support. The cited product information also supplies no independent latency or reliability measurements. Do not rank an extender on those measures without documented specifications or testing.

How to connect a point-to-point HDMI extender
- Connect the console or other HDMI source to the transmitter’s HDMI input.
- Connect the transmitter’s specified Cat5e/Cat6 link port to the receiver’s matching link port using the cable type and installation method required by that kit.
- Connect the receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Attach power as directed by the manual. If the kit uses a dedicated switch or supports power over the link, follow its stated topology instead of improvising.
- Select the TV input, then confirm that the source negotiates the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio, and other features you intend to use.
What to do when the picture or features do not work
- No picture: Check that the source is connected to the transmitter’s HDMI input and the TV to the receiver’s HDMI output. Confirm that the sender and receiver are powered and that the link LED or other status indicator reports a connection. On the Monoprice 8123 system, the manual identifies the sender’s LED as indicating an established HDBaseT link.
- Link does not establish: Verify that the cable is connected to the extender’s link ports—not a separate Ethernet port—and that its type and wiring meet the manual’s requirements. Do not route a proprietary link through a router or switch unless the product explicitly supports that setup.
- Picture works but the desired mode does not: Check the resolution, refresh rate, HDCP, HDR, and color-format limits for the specific kit at the installed cable length. Reduce the output mode temporarily to help isolate a bandwidth or compatibility limit.
- Control or audio is missing: Check whether the kit supports the particular audio passthrough, IR, CEC, or USB function you need; these features are not implied by video extension alone.
Can one source feed several TVs?
Some products support multi-display expansion, but the exact architecture matters. Cable Matters states that its product can expand to as many as 255 displays using additional receiver boxes and a dedicated unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch. That configuration is specific to the product page; it does not mean an ordinary network switch or any HDMI extender can distribute a signal to that many screens.
