A theme controls how WordPress renders and presents your site; a static-site generator exports the public pages and assets for deployment. The right choice depends on your editing workflow, design needs, and which site features must still work after export—not on a claim that a particular theme is automatically faster or static-ready.
Below are 22 candidates to evaluate, grouped by editing model and use case. This is a shortlist, not a tested ranking: the available compatibility statement says Simply Static works with “virtually all WordPress themes and most plugins,” but that is not evidence that every theme-and-plugin combination has been tested. Verify your own exported site before launch.

How a WordPress theme fits into a static site
WordPress normally builds pages when visitors request them. A static generator instead crawls the public site and exports files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, metadata, and sitemaps. The theme shapes those pages inside WordPress; the generator and deployment workflow make the published copy static. Simply Static’s documentation describes this export model and names Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Netlify, and Vercel as hosting options: Simply Static documentation.

That distinction matters because a static export does not automatically run WordPress’s server-side functions. Forms, search, comments, checkout, account areas, inventory updates, and other dynamic behavior may need a third-party integration or a separate service. Treat exported pages as a separate deliverable and test them at the deployed URL.

22 themes to evaluate for a WordPress-to-static workflow
The WordPress.org theme directory says it has over 15,000 free themes, a directory count accessed on October 8, 2026. That number indicates breadth, not quality, maintenance, or compatibility with a particular export setup. Use the candidates below as a starting point, then check each theme’s current listing, update history, licensing, pricing, and plugin requirements.
Block themes for Site Editor workflows
A true block theme lets you edit templates such as headers, footers, and page layouts in the WordPress Site Editor. These options are relevant if you want to build most of the site with blocks rather than theme-specific Customizer controls.
Rank #2
- Twenty Twenty-Five — a current default-theme candidate to consider for a block-based workflow.
- Twenty Twenty-Four — another default block-theme option.
- Twenty Twenty-Three — a prior default-theme candidate; check its current maintenance status before choosing it.
- Twenty Twenty-Two — an earlier default-theme candidate; verify current support and compatibility.
- Ollie — a block-theme option discussed in a 2026 comparison.
- Extendable — a directory-listed theme candidate to inspect for the patterns and layouts your site needs.
Hybrid themes and themes with broader design ecosystems
Hybrid themes typically retain Customizer or theme-specific settings while supporting blocks in content. They can suit users who prefer familiar theme controls, or who want an ecosystem of starter designs and optional builders. Check whether a chosen layout depends on an additional plugin or builder, because that dependency affects maintenance and portability.
- Astra — a widely discussed theme with a broader starter-design ecosystem; verify which designs and features require paid tiers or add-ons.
- Kadence — a candidate for users weighing theme controls, block-oriented features, and optional ecosystem components.
- GeneratePress — a candidate to assess for the controls and layout flexibility your site actually needs.
- Blocksy — a theme to evaluate for its editing options and any required companion components.
- Neve — a hybrid-theme candidate discussed alongside block themes in a 2026 comparison.
- OceanWP — a directory-listed option; inspect its current feature and plugin requirements.
- Hello Elementor — a candidate built around an Elementor-oriented workflow; account for builder dependence when planning the exported site.
- Hello Biz — a business-focused directory candidate to evaluate against your required layouts and integrations.
- Twenty Twenty-One — a classic-theme candidate; check current maintenance and whether its editing model suits you.
- Twenty Twenty — an earlier default-theme candidate; verify current support before adopting it.
- Twenty Seventeen — an older classic-theme candidate; confirm maintenance and compatibility for your needs.
- Hestia — a candidate to inspect for current pricing, design features, and any plugin dependencies.
- Sydney — a candidate to evaluate for its current controls, patterns, and support status.
Store and other specialized use cases
- Storefront — consider it for a WordPress store presentation, but distinguish static catalog pages from live cart, checkout, customer accounts, and inventory behavior.
- Divi — a builder-centered candidate; evaluate the builder dependency and confirm that required interactive elements have workable static equivalents.
- Bluehost Blueprint — a directory-listed candidate to check for its current availability, requirements, and editing model.
These names are not a head-to-head performance ranking or a claim of theme-by-theme export testing. A 2026 comparison of several themes explicitly says it did not run independent GTmetrix or PageSpeed benchmarks. Do not infer static-delivery speed from a theme name, vendor description, or the fact that a theme supports blocks.
How to choose among them
Choose the editing model first
If you want to edit templates visually—including global headers and footers—look for a true block theme using the Site Editor. A hybrid theme usually keeps Customizer controls and supports blocks for page content, but does not necessarily use the Site Editor for every template. Confirm the model in the theme’s current documentation or live WordPress installation rather than relying only on the “block” label.
Check patterns, add-ons, and builder dependence
Look at whether the layouts you need are built into the theme, supplied by a separate block library, or designed for a page builder. Identify which starter designs or features are restricted to paid tiers. Fewer required components can mean a simpler site to maintain, while a builder or add-on may be worthwhile if it provides a layout or editing capability you genuinely need.
Rank #4
Separate static pages from live services
A brochure site, portfolio, documentation site, or read-only product catalog may export cleanly as public pages. Features that depend on WordPress or another server—such as a live search index, comment submission, cart, checkout, account login, or changing stock data—need a compatible external service or a different architecture. Decide which interactions are essential before selecting a theme, then test them after export.

Theme prices, paid-tier features, compatibility notes, and maintenance can change. Check the vendor or directory listing immediately before purchase or deployment. A free theme is not automatically less capable for your use case, and a paid theme is not proof of better static output.

Build and verify the exported site
- Select the theme based on the required design, editing model, and any builder or add-on dependency.
- Create and manage the site in WordPress. Build representative pages, navigation, media, and integrations before exporting.
- Generate a static export. Simply Static describes crawling WordPress and exporting public assets. Its listing says the free version exports a ZIP or local directory; advanced deployment and server-side feature options are available through Pro or Studio. See the Simply Static WordPress.org listing.
- Deploy the files to a static host or CDN. The available documentation names Cloudflare Pages, GitHub Pages, Netlify, and Vercel among possible destinations; confirm the current setup requirements for your chosen host in its own documentation.
- Test the deployed version, not just WordPress. Check representative page types, navigation, media URLs, redirects, forms, search, comments, commerce flows, and plugin-dependent behavior. Confirm that links resolve to the deployed domain and that any required external integration works.
What static compatibility does—and does not—tell you
Simply Static’s plugin listing states that it works with “virtually all WordPress themes and most plugins.” That is the plugin author’s compatibility statement, not an independent test of every combination. Broad compatibility means a theme is not automatically disqualified from a static workflow; it does not establish that all its dynamic features, builder components, or integrations will behave correctly in your exported site.
The best candidate is therefore the one that supports your content and editing needs without requiring interactions that cannot be delivered statically—or for which you have not arranged a separate service. Validate the exact theme, plugins, export configuration, and hosting destination together.
