AI and data can make mutual-fund discovery, onboarding, explanations and ongoing support more relevant to an investor’s goals. They do not guarantee better returns or remove the need to understand a recommendation, protect personal data and reach a qualified human when a decision is complex.
Where digital tools fit in the investor journey
A mutual-fund journey is not just the moment someone taps “invest.” It includes learning what is available, opening an account, understanding choices, investing, tracking progress and getting help. Digital services can reduce steps and make information easier to reach; data and AI may tailor what a person sees along the way.

Discovery and onboarding
Digital platforms can make it easier to find information and complete onboarding. In India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s Investor Survey 2025 describes simplified onboarding and broader reach, while also identifying digital literacy, online security and credible guidance as concerns. Access is useful only when investors can safely navigate the process and judge the information they receive.

A platform can use data to show information or explanations that are more relevant to a person’s stated goals and circumstances. SEBI’s overview of the evolving mutual-fund landscape describes AI and data analytics as tools for analyzing large datasets and supporting tailored investment guidance. This is a description of potential uses, not evidence that every fund or platform uses these tools, or that personalization improves investment outcomes.

Monitoring and support
Digital experiences can also help investors review goals and portfolios or access educational material. Engagement is broader than app visits: Morningstar’s Investor Engagement Index includes feeling informed, understanding investment concepts, reviewing goals and portfolios, seeing alignment with long-term goals, participating in decisions and receiving financial education. Morningstar reported that higher engagement correlated with greater trust in AI; that association does not show that engagement caused trust, or that trust makes advice accurate.
What personalization can—and cannot—do
Useful personalization makes a decision easier to understand or act on. For example, a service might explain how an allocation relates to a stated time horizon, surface relevant educational material, or remind an investor to review a goal. These are examples of possible service design, not claims about any particular platform.

Personalization is not a performance promise. A tailored explanation can still rest on incomplete, outdated or misunderstood information; an algorithm can make a recommendation that does not fit an investor’s actual needs. Investors should be able to see the assumptions behind a suggestion and correct the inputs that shape it. A polished interface does not substitute for a clear explanation of risk, costs, diversification or the possibility of loss.

Investor participation also matters. In its US research, Morningstar found that greater engagement was associated with higher trust in AI, but correlation cannot establish that one produces the other. Engagement is better understood as a sign that investors are informed and involved—not as proof that an AI system is reliable or that an investment is suitable.
How robo-advice and hybrid advice work
Robo-advice is a service model, not a guarantee that a machine independently makes every decision. Many robo-advisors construct diversified portfolios from low-cost, typically passive mutual funds or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), then rebalance portfolios automatically. Some services also offer access to a human advisor. Morningstar’s 2025 Robo-Advisor Report evaluated 16 major digital advice providers and discusses both portfolio design and hybrid support.
The practical question is how a service works and what support it provides—not whether it is simply “human” or “machine.” When assessing a robo-advice or hybrid service, examine:
Rank #4
- Advice scope: Does it provide general education, a portfolio suggestion or advice tailored to your circumstances?
- Portfolio construction: What role do mutual funds or ETFs play, and how are diversification and rebalancing handled?
- Planning tools: Can you connect recommendations to goals and review progress?
- Human support: Is an advisor available, and how can you escalate a question that does not fit the automated process?
- Costs and minimums: Check current provider disclosures; features, fees and account thresholds can change.
- Data and explanations: Find out what information is used, how it is protected and how the service explains its recommendations.
The Morningstar report provides a view of provider features, but it is not a current comparison of every service or a substitute for checking individual disclosures.

Trust and reliance are different. In Morningstar’s 2026 US investor research, 44% of participants reported high trust in AI to help make investment decisions, up from 29% in 2024. Yet only 2% said they relied on AI for most investment decisions, while 63% said they did not use AI for investment decisions. These findings describe US survey participants; they should not be read as global adoption rates or as evidence about Indian investors.
Best Value
Morningstar identified concerns among people with lower trust that included personalization, reliability and performance, user control, and human oversight. Those concerns point to practical questions for any digital advice experience:
- Explainability: Can the service show why it suggested a fund or allocation in terms you understand?
- Control: Can you review, change or challenge the inputs and recommendation?
- Reliability: Does the service explain the limits of its guidance rather than presenting an output as certain?
- Privacy and security: What data does it collect, how is it used and protected, and what security practices should you follow?
- Human oversight: Is there a route to a person when your circumstances are unusual, your goals change or the recommendation is unclear?
India’s market scale provides context, not evidence of AI adoption: SEBI’s 2025 survey reports mutual-fund assets under management of ₹79 lakh crore in September 2025, compared with ₹12 lakh crore in 2015. Those figures describe assets in India, not the number of investors using AI or the effect of personalized advice.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before following a digital recommendation
- Identify what the service is offering: education, a general suggestion or personalized investment advice.
- Ask what information and assumptions shaped the recommendation, and correct anything that is inaccurate.
- Check whether you can understand the fund or allocation, its risks and costs, and how it relates to your goal.
- Review how the platform uses and protects your data, and whether you can control or update it.
- Find out how to change or challenge a recommendation and how to speak with a person if your situation needs judgment beyond the automated process.
