For Cox cable Internet, the modem—not the Wi-Fi router—must be Cox-certified and support your subscribed speed tier. Choose a separate Wi-Fi 6-or-newer router if your modem does not include Wi-Fi, or use a modem-router gateway. With Cox Fiber, Cox’s ONT serves as the modem, so you need a router or gateway for Wi-Fi and multiple devices.
What “compatible with Cox” means
Cox’s network certification requirement applies to cable modems. A router handles Wi-Fi and distributes the connection around your home; Cox’s guidance does not mean that a generic router must appear on its certified modem list. For coax service, check the exact modem model against Cox’s certified cable modem list and confirm it supports your plan’s speed tier. Cox recommends at least Wi-Fi 6 for a separate router.

Choose equipment for your Cox connection
| Connection and setup | What you need | Compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| Coax, separate modem and router | A cable modem and a standalone router if the modem does not provide Wi-Fi. | The modem must be Cox-certified and support your subscribed speed tier. Cox recommends Wi-Fi 6 or newer for the router. |
| Coax, combined gateway | A modem-router gateway combines the cable connection and Wi-Fi functions. Cox offers its Panoramic Wifi Gateway. | For a retail gateway, verify the exact modem model and plan-tier support on Cox’s current certified list. |
| Cox Fiber | Cox installs an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which functions as the modem. Connect a router or gateway for Wi-Fi or multiple devices. | A coax cable modem is not the device needed at the fiber handoff. |
How to check whether a Cox cable modem will work
- Find the exact model number on the modem’s label or product documentation.
- Open Cox’s certified cable modem list and look for that exact model.
- Match the listed compatibility to your subscribed speed tier. A model’s general capabilities or its packaging are not proof that Cox certifies it for your plan.
- If buying a used modem, confirm it is no longer connected to another Cox account. Cox says it cannot activate a modem that remains tied to another account.
Cox’s list can change, so check the live page before buying or activating equipment. Do not assume a model is compatible just because it worked on another provider or Cox plan.

Can you use your own router or modem with Cox?
You can use retail equipment, subject to the modem requirements for coax service. Cox says there is no charge to use a customer-owned modem. If that modem lacks Wi-Fi, add a separate router; if it includes Wi-Fi, you may not need another one. Cox recommends Wi-Fi 6 or newer for a standalone router.

With customer-owned equipment, Cox says you are responsible for matters including certification, speed-tier support, security settings, upgrades, and troubleshooting after Cox confirms its service is working. Cox describes support for equipment bought or rented directly from it, and says retail equipment does not include certain Panoramic Wifi features. Check Cox’s current terms for the details that apply to your account.
When Cox equipment or extra coverage may make sense
Cox’s Panoramic Wifi Gateway is an option if you prefer a combined gateway rather than selecting a separate modem and router. For larger homes, Cox describes Panoramic Wifi Pods as an optional way to expand coverage for Panoramic Wifi. They should not be assumed to work as an add-on for third-party routers.
Rank #2
- Compatible with major cable internet providers including Xfinity and Cox. NOT compatible with Verizon, Spectrum, AT&T, CenturyLink, DSL providers, DirecTV, DISH and any bundled voice service. Best for cable provider plans up to 800Mbps.
If you choose retail equipment instead, separate the two decisions: first confirm the cable modem’s Cox certification and speed-tier support; then choose a router for your Wi-Fi needs. The router’s Wi-Fi generation and coverage suitability do not replace the modem compatibility check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both a modem and a router for Cox?
