A 4G icon usually means your phone is using LTE because 5G is unavailable, your settings favor LTE, or your plan, SIM/eSIM, phone model, or carrier setup is not ready for 5G. It does not, by itself, mean the phone is broken. Check the causes below before considering a replacement.
What the 4G icon tells you—and what it doesn’t
Your phone may fall back to 4G when 5G service is not usable at your current location. Coverage can vary from one place to another, and a carrier’s 5G coverage may be smaller than its 4G coverage. Google says Pixel phones use 4G or a lower network when 5G is unavailable. Google Pixel Phone Help

The icon is not a speed test or a guarantee of a sustained connection. Apple notes that an iPhone’s 5G indicator depends on carrier network configuration and, rarely, may appear when coverage is unavailable. There is no usable 5G coverage where you are
Buildings, local network coverage, or simply being outside a carrier’s 5G service area can leave the phone on LTE. Check your carrier’s coverage map for your current location, look for a local outage, and compare the indicator somewhere else if practical.

Your network setting selects LTE or uses automatic switching
On iPhone, LTE mode restricts the phone to LTE even when 5G is available. With 5G Auto, the phone may switch to LTE when 5G would not noticeably improve the experience. Apple provides these controls under Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Apple Support
On Pixel, check Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred network type. Menu labels and paths can differ across Android phones and software versions, so consult your phone maker’s instructions if you do not see those options. Google Pixel Phone Help

Battery saving is turning 5G off
Apple says Low Power Mode disables 5G except in some cases on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Google says Battery Saver turns off 5G on Pixel. Temporarily turn the feature off to test whether the 5G indicator returns; leaving it off may use more battery. Apple Support · Google Pixel Phone Help

Your plan, SIM/eSIM, or carrier activation is not set up for 5G
A phone that supports 5G still needs a carrier and plan that support it. Apple advises checking both, and notes that an older SIM may need carrier setup for 5G. Ask your carrier to confirm that your plan is eligible and that your SIM or eSIM is activated and provisioned for 5G. Apple Support

Your exact phone variant is not compatible with that network
Support for 5G in general does not guarantee compatibility with every carrier or regional network. Apple’s guidance for iPhone requires iPhone 12 or later, a provider that supports 5G, and a 5G plan. Google cautions that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones work on every 5G network. Confirm the exact model and regional variant with your carrier before concluding that the phone needs replacing. How to troubleshoot 4G instead of 5G
- Check the location and network. Use your carrier’s coverage map for where you are, check for outages, and compare in another location if possible. Google Pixel Phone Help
- Verify the exact model. Check with the carrier that your phone’s model and regional variant support its 5G network where you live. A generic 5G label is not enough to establish compatibility. Google Pixel Phone Help
- Ask the carrier to check your account. Confirm 5G plan eligibility and SIM/eSIM activation or provisioning. Ask whether the account or local service has changed. Apple Support · Google Pixel Phone Help
- Check the network mode. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and check whether LTE is selected. On Pixel, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred network type. Apple Support · Google Pixel Phone Help

When does a replacement phone make sense?
Consider replacing the phone only after confirming with the carrier that your exact model is incompatible with its 5G network. If you do need another phone, check the specific model variant’s network compatibility and regional availability with that carrier before buying; a 5G label alone is not sufficient.
