1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe right modem depends first on how your internet reaches your home—not on which Wi-Fi label looks newest. For cable, check your provider’s current approved-device list and confirm support for your plan’s speed. For fiber, find out whether you need a router for the provider’s handoff device rather than a cable modem. Then decide whether you want separate modem and router hardware or a combined gateway.
First, identify the equipment your internet service needs
A modem connects an incoming internet service to Ethernet; a router uses that connection to serve devices on your local network and provide Wi-Fi. Google explains that the incoming connection might use coax, a telephone line, fiber or another medium, and that the modem provides an Ethernet connection for a Wi-Fi router: Google Home and Nest Help: What is a modem?

A standalone modem generally does not provide Wi-Fi, so you will need a separate router. A gateway combines modem and router functions in one device. Some buildings or dorms provide Ethernet directly; if the wall jack is the service handoff, you may need a router for household Wi-Fi but not a modem.
Check provider compatibility before choosing a cable modem
Cable-modem compatibility is specific to the internet provider and can depend on the plan. Xfinity says customer-owned equipment must be compatible with its service and support the customer’s internet speed; it directs customers to its current compatible-device list. Check the list for your provider, service tier and any special requirements before buying: Xfinity: Using your own modem, router, or gateway with Xfinity.

Certification is useful, but it does not establish approval by every provider. CableLabs says certification or qualification indicates that a device passed tests for compliance with the applicable specification and demonstrated interoperability with other certified devices. Providers may add their own requirements: Spectrum describes a process that includes CableLabs certification, FCC certification and Charter’s certification. Check the provider’s own policy and approved list, not just a manufacturer’s certification claim.
For Spectrum’s current requirements, see Spectrum’s DOCSIS Modem Policy and CableLabs Certification.

Decide between a modem, a router and a gateway
Standalone modem plus router
This arrangement gives you separate devices: the modem connects to the provider’s service, and the router connects to the modem by Ethernet and supplies Wi-Fi. Choose it when you want to select or upgrade the router independently. Confirm that the modem is approved for your provider and plan, and that the router’s WAN port supports the speed you intend to use.

A gateway combines the modem and router, which can reduce the number of devices and cables. Verify provider approval and speed support, then check whether its built-in Wi-Fi meets your needs. If you plan to use another router or mesh system, find out whether the gateway supports bridge mode and whether your intended network setup works with it; do not assume every gateway offers the configuration options you want.

For fiber, check the handoff before shopping
Fiber service may use a provider-installed handoff device, such as an ONT or Google Fiber Jack. That does not automatically mean you need to buy a cable modem. Identify the equipment and connection your provider supplies, then check the router requirements for that service.
For Google Fiber, the provider describes connecting a router to the Fiber Jack with Ethernet and gives router guidance by plan. Its recommendations call for 1 Gbps Ethernet WAN and LAN ports for a 1 Gig plan, and a 10 Gbps WAN port with a 2.5 Gbps-or-faster LAN port for multi-gig plans. These are Google Fiber requirements and examples, not universal fiber standards. Its own-router guidance lists Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 options; a Wi-Fi generation label alone does not guarantee the wired speed your plan can deliver. See Google Fiber Help: Use your own router.

- VERSATILE CONNECTIONS: 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports give you fast wired connections to your computer,, game box, and other devices. One USB port for storage devices.
Match speed across the entire connection
A fast modem cannot compensate for a slower component elsewhere in the path. For the speed you want, check the provider plan and provisioning, modem capability, router WAN and LAN ports, Ethernet cabling and client-device limits. This matters especially for multi-gig service: a router or client with a 1 Gbps port can constrain a faster wired connection even if another device in the setup supports more.

- Plan and modem: Verify the modem supports your provider’s service and subscribed speed tier.
- Ethernet ports: Check modem, router and any switch ports along the wired path.
- Wi-Fi: Consider the router’s wireless capabilities and placement, as well as what your phones, computers and other clients support.
- Other services: If you use provider voice service, check whether the equipment supports it.
- Support: Confirm what troubleshooting or equipment support your provider offers for customer-owned hardware.
Connect and troubleshoot the setup
Standalone cable modem and router
- Connect the modem to the provider’s coaxial service connection.
- Connect the modem’s Ethernet output to the router’s WAN port.
- Configure the router using its manufacturer’s instructions, then confirm the modem and service are provisioned for your plan.
Google Fiber with your own router
- Connect the router to the Fiber Jack using an Ethernet cable.
- Configure the router according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
If you are keeping provider-supplied router equipment while adding your own router, check whether bridge mode is needed for your particular setup. Google Fiber’s setup guidance is at Use your own router.

If Wi-Fi is slow, test over Ethernet as well as wirelessly before replacing the modem. Google Fiber notes that wired connections to a router or switch provide the fastest and most reliable connection: Connect devices to your network. Compare results while checking your subscription speed, provider provisioning and compatibility, router capability and location, wired port speeds, and the limits of the device you are testing with. If a wired test is also slow, the issue may be upstream of Wi-Fi; if wired performance is good but wireless is not, focus on the router, placement and client device.
