For a specific kind of filtering, a free alternative can do more than Google Public DNS’s standard, generally unfiltered service: Quad9 blocks known threat domains, AdGuard DNS filters ads and trackers, and two family-oriented options add content restrictions. These are feature differences, not proof that any service is universally faster, more private, or better than Google or Cloudflare.
Which free DNS service fits each job?
DNS translates domain names into the addresses computers use to connect. A filtering resolver can refuse to return an address for domains on its blocklists, but that is a domain-level control—not a filter for every ad, page element, or URL.

| Service | Best fit | What the cited source says | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quad9 | Blocking known malicious domains | Quad9 says it blocks threats including malware, phishing, spyware, and botnets, and says it does not log data containing client IP addresses. Quad9 | Threat feeds cannot catch every harmful domain; this is not a replacement for endpoint protection. |
| AdGuard DNS | Blocking ads and trackers at the DNS level | AdGuard documents a default public server that blocks ads, trackers, malware, and phishing, plus Family mode and four encrypted DNS transports. AdGuard DNS documentation | Some ads remain, and blocking can interfere with sites or app functions. |
| CleanBrowsing Family | Family filtering with supported safe-search enforcement | TechRadar’s 2025 review describes its free Family filter as enforcing safe-search modes on supported search services and blocking VPN/proxy sites. TechRadar’s DNS server review | This feature description comes from a secondary review; check CleanBrowsing’s current official setup details and terms. |
| OpenDNS FamilyShield | A simple, preconfigured adult-content filter | TechRadar’s review describes FamilyShield as a free option configured to block adult content. These options address different needs; they are not four equivalent products to rank. If you want general-purpose resolution without routine content filtering, Google Public DNS is a free global resolver with IPv4 addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, and support for DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) and DNS-over-TLS (DoT). Google says it generally does not filter content, apart from rare security or legal cases. Google Public DNS setup and use The comparison with Cloudflare here is limited to the standard resolver mode; filtering characteristics can depend on the mode selected.
How to choose by the result you want
For protection from known malicious domains: Quad9
Quad9 uses threat intelligence to block lookups for domains associated with threats such as phishing and malware. That can add a useful layer before a browser or app connects, but it cannot guarantee that every dangerous site is blocked. Keep device security software and safe browsing habits in place.

Quad9’s homepage reported “670M+ Average Daily Blocks,” “230+ Resolver Clusters in over 110 countries,” and “25+ Threat Intelligence Providers” when accessed on October 7, 2026. Those are Quad9’s own operational figures, not independent comparative measures of protection or speed. The provider also says it does not log data containing the client IP address; treat that as its stated policy rather than an independent audit. Quad9
For DNS-level ad and tracker filtering: AdGuard DNS
AdGuard DNS is the clearest fit if the goal is to block ad and tracker domains without installing a browser extension on every device. Its documentation distinguishes its default public server from Family mode, which adds adult-content blocking and supported safe search. The same documentation lists DNSCrypt, DoH, DoT, and DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) as supported encrypted DNS options. AdGuard DNS documentation

DNS filtering works on domain lookups, not individual page elements or paths. An ad served from the same domain as the content, for example, may not be blocked selectively. A blocked domain can also disable a feature or prevent an app or site from working as expected.

CleanBrowsing Family is the stronger match when safe-search behavior is part of the requirement: TechRadar’s 2025 review says the filter also blocks VPN/proxy sites and sets supported search services to safe-search modes. OpenDNS FamilyShield is described in that review as a simpler, preconfigured adult-content filter. The review also distinguishes it from regular free OpenDNS, which it describes as offering configurable content filtering and anti-phishing. TechRadar’s DNS server review

Because those details come from a 2025 editorial review rather than current provider documentation, confirm each service’s current filter behavior, availability, and device setup instructions with its provider before making it the basis of a household policy. DNS is also not full parental-control software: it does not provide comprehensive supervision of screen time, device use, or every page and app. Pair it with device-level controls when broader oversight is needed.
Does encrypted DNS hide your browsing?
No. DoH, DoT, DoQ, and DNSCrypt encrypt the DNS connection between a client and its recursive resolver, helping prevent others on the path from simply reading or altering those DNS queries. They do not make the user anonymous or conceal all browsing activity: websites still receive connection requests, and other network or device signals may reveal activity. Privacy Guides identifies protocol support, logging and privacy policy, EDNS Client Subnet, and filtering as relevant dimensions when comparing DNS providers. Privacy Guides: DNS

How to switch DNS without weakening the policy
- Choose one provider and mode. Select the filtering behavior you need, then follow that provider’s current official instructions for your device or router. Google’s setup guide illustrates changing resolver addresses in network settings. Google Public DNS setup and use
- Apply it where you need coverage. A device-level change affects that device; router configuration can apply to devices using the home network, if the router supports custom DNS. Existing hardware is often enough—buying a product is not inherently required.
- Avoid mixing resolvers with different policies. Configured primary and secondary servers are not always used as a strict primary-then-backup pair. Depending on the client or operating system, queries may go to either resolver. Google warns that mixing resolvers with different filtering or DNSSEC behavior can lead to weaker filtering or, in certain configurations, disable DNSSEC protection. Choose one provider/mode for a consistent policy. Google Public DNS FAQ
- Check that important services still work. If a site, app, or connected device breaks, temporarily restore the previous DNS setting or switch off filtering to determine whether a blocked domain is responsible. Consult the provider’s current documentation for any available allowlist or troubleshooting steps.
- Respect managed-device policies. Before changing DNS on a work device or network, check with the organization that manages it; its security or access rules may depend on the configured resolver.
Which service is fastest?
There is no supported universal speed winner among these four and Google or Cloudflare. DNS latency depends on location, network routing, and cache state, and the available evidence does not establish a current controlled comparison. If speed is your priority, test from your own connection under comparable conditions rather than relying on a global ranking.
