1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe main downsides of an iMac all-in-one are that you must choose its memory and internal storage up front, its ports and external-display support depend on the configuration, and the computer and screen are bundled together. Repair options are model-specific, too. Apple’s current reference point is its 24-inch M4 iMac, but configurations differ, so check the exact model before buying.
1. You cannot upgrade memory later
For 24-inch iMac models released in 2021 or later, memory is integrated into the Apple silicon chip package. Apple Support says it “can’t be upgraded.” That makes memory a purchase-time choice: consider the applications and workloads you expect to use throughout the computer’s useful life, not just what you run today. Do not assume this limitation applies to older iMacs without checking their specifications.

2. Internal storage is limited to the configuration you choose
Apple’s published configurations for the current 24-inch iMac reach up to 2TB SSD. If your photo library, video files, projects, or other data may outgrow the capacity you select, plan for that before purchase. Apple’s iMac specifications describe the available configurations.

3. Port count and display expansion vary by configuration
Apple lists two- and four-port iMac configurations. Both use Thunderbolt/USB-C connections, but the number of ports and supported external displays differ. A connector mismatch can also mean you need an adapter: Apple advises checking whether an adapter is required for your device and Mac port.
| Configuration | External display support |
|---|---|
| Two-port iMac | One external display up to 6K at 60Hz |
| Four-port iMac | Two displays up to 6K at 60Hz each, or one display up to 8K at 60Hz |
These are the capabilities Apple lists for the configurations; check the exact model’s requirements before planning a multi-display setup. Apple’s specifications list ports and display support, while Apple’s adapter guidance covers connecting devices with different connectors.
Before choosing a configuration, inventory the equipment you already use, such as USB-A accessories, card readers, wired networking adapters, and external displays. If your devices outnumber the available ports, you may need a compatible hub or dock; compatibility and performance depend on the device and iMac configuration.

4. The display comes with the computer
An iMac combines its screen and computer in one purchase. That integrated design can make sense if you want a single desktop system, but it offers less flexibility if you already own a suitable monitor or prefer to replace the computer and display independently. A modular desktop lets you treat those components as separate choices; this is a flexibility trade-off, not a claim about which setup costs less.
The iMac’s external-display support can extend the workspace, but it does not change the fact that the built-in screen is part of the system you are buying. Check the supported display count and resolution for your configuration if you expect to use additional screens.

Apple publishes repair procedures for selected recent iMac configurations, including procedures involving the display and logic board. It also lists parts support for selected components of the 2024 24-inch iMac. These resources show that repair documentation and parts pathways exist for specific models; they do not establish that a repair is simple, inexpensive, or available in every location.

Before buying, check the repair manual and parts information for the exact model you are considering, then confirm local service options and part availability. Apple’s repair manual for the 2024 four-port iMac and parts support information for selected 2024 iMac components illustrate why repair planning should be model-specific.

When an iMac’s trade-offs matter most
The downsides are most relevant if you need more memory or storage over time, rely on a large number of wired peripherals, already have a monitor you want to keep, or need a specific repair route. Compare a candidate iMac with a modular desktop by looking at the memory and SSD capacity at purchase, port types and count, external-display support, whether you can reuse a monitor, and model-specific service and parts availability. Include any adapters and external storage you would actually need; available evidence does not establish a fair price comparison across configurations and vendors.
