Good PDF redaction software must do more than make confidential text look covered: it should permanently remove selected content, sanitize hidden data, find repeated terms, and support scanned documents through OCR. Check for all four capabilities, then inspect the saved PDF before sharing it; no feature list alone guarantees that every trace of sensitive information is gone.
1. Permanent removal—not a visual cover
Redaction is different from drawing a black box over text. A shape, highlight, or annotation may obscure words on the page while leaving the underlying content accessible. Look for a dedicated redaction tool that removes selected text or images from the document when you apply the redactions.

Adobe Acrobat Help describes its feature this way: “Redaction permanently hides sensitive information from a PDF document.” In this context, “hides” refers to Adobe’s redaction operation, not a generic instruction to cover text with a shape. Adobe says redacted content is replaced with colored boxes and that the operation is permanent after application and saving. Foxit also describes its redaction function as permanently removing visible text and images.
These are vendor descriptions of their features, not an independent security certification. Confirm that you are applying the redaction—not merely marking content for redaction—and save the resulting document. 2. Separate sanitization for hidden information
Removing visible text does not necessarily remove other data stored in a PDF. A useful redaction workflow should offer a separate sanitization step for information such as metadata, embedded content, or scripts. Check that the software can clean the relevant data classes and that sanitization is included in the workflow for the saved copy you intend to share.
The categories vary by product. Adobe lists metadata, embedded content, and scripts among sanitization targets. Foxit lists metadata, comments, hidden data from previous saves, hidden layers, and overlapping objects. Compare the actual categories and controls in the edition you plan to use rather than assuming that “redaction” automatically sanitizes everything. Adobe Acrobat Help; Foxit product information.
3. Search for repeated words, phrases, and patterns
When a sensitive name, phrase, or number appears more than once, search-driven redaction can help you locate occurrences across a document. Adobe documents searching for one word or phrase, multiple terms, or patterns, then reviewing matches, selecting occurrences, marking them, and applying redactions. Its workflow also offers an option to sanitize hidden information before saving.
Treat search as a way to find candidates, not a guarantee that every relevant occurrence has been detected. Review the matches before applying the changes, and check the document afterward. This workflow is documented by Adobe; it is not evidence of perfect detection in every PDF. Adobe Acrobat Help: Search and redact text in PDFs with Acrobat Pro.

4. OCR for scanned PDFs
A scanned PDF may store each page as an image rather than searchable text. OCR—optical character recognition—converts text in page images into machine-readable text, making text search useful on files that otherwise have no searchable text layer. If you routinely handle scans, check that the product and edition you are considering include OCR as part of the relevant workflow.
Foxit lists OCR for scanned documents in its comparison of PDF Editor+ and Acrobat Pro. The cited product information does not establish comparative OCR accuracy, language coverage, or error rates, so a feature listing is not a basis for ranking products on those measures. How to assess the four features together
Use this checklist when comparing products or testing a document workflow:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Visible content: Is there a dedicated operation that removes selected text and images, rather than an annotation that only covers them?
- Hidden data: Is there a separate sanitization function, and does it cover the data types relevant to your file?
- Repeated content: Can you search for terms or patterns and inspect the matches before applying redactions?
- Scans: Does the edition include OCR for image-based PDFs, and can you review its recognized text before relying on search?
Also check which edition includes each function and whether the workflow fits your operating system, deployment needs, or automation requirements. Adobe Acrobat Pro and Foxit PDF Editor have official documentation describing relevant features, but those pages are not an independent head-to-head security evaluation. Foxit’s cited comparison presents US-region information dated July 2026; verify current availability, edition details, and local licensing before choosing.

Why the saved PDF still needs review
Redaction software is one part of a release process, not a guarantee that a file is safe to distribute. The Australian Cyber Security Centre examined Adobe Acrobat Pro DC 2017 in tests first published in July 2018 and updated in October 2021. In the specified test cases, it recovered no redacted information from PDFs created with Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Acrobat Distiller, and Microsoft Word, while remnants were recovered from PDFs created with CutePDF and LibreOffice Writer. These findings apply to the named software versions and document-generation cases; they do not establish the behavior of current releases or every PDF.
A 2022 paper, “Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction,” describes leakage risks beyond recovering text by copy and paste, including information in character positions and attacks involving OCR-processed documents. It supports reviewing redacted output carefully; it does not show that any named current product is categorically unsafe.
After applying redactions and sanitization, review the saved copy—not just the editing view. Check the pages visually, test whether supposedly removed text can still be selected or searched, and confirm that the intended hidden-data cleanup was applied. These checks can catch mistakes, but they are not a proof that every possible information signal has been removed.
