It can hold video, audio, subtitles, timing information, and metadata. The container is not the codec: codecs encode or compress the individual audio and video streams inside it.
What is an audio-video container?
Think of a container as the organized package around a media file’s contents. It gives software a structure for finding and interpreting the included tracks and information—for example, a video track, multiple audio tracks, subtitles, timing, and descriptive metadata.

As RFC 9559 puts it, Matroska is “an envelope in which there can be many audio, video, and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file.” RFC 9559: Matroska Media Container Format Specification
How is a container different from a codec?
A container organizes and packages media streams; a codec is the format used to encode or decode an individual audio or video stream. A container can hold streams encoded with codecs, but it does not determine by itself how those streams were compressed. The Matroska specification explicitly distinguishes Matroska from an audio or video compression format.

This is why a file extension alone cannot tell you everything about its contents. The extension may suggest the container, but it does not identify every codec in the file or guarantee that a particular player has the decoders needed to play it.
How do MP4, Matroska, and WebM relate?
| Format | What it is | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 | A format in the ISO Base Media File Format family. | ISO/IEC 14496-12 specifies a structure for media data, including its location, size, timing, and characteristics. ISO/IEC 14496-12 |
| Matroska | An audiovisual container based on EBML. | Its documentation describes multiple streams, selectable tracks, chapters, metadata, seeking, and streaming-related features. Matroska technical documentation |
| WebM | A subset of Matroska with more constrained guidelines for web use. | The WebM Project’s published guidelines are specifically scoped to streaming files over HTTP. WebM container guidelines |
These formats are related in different ways, but they are not interchangeable specifications. Their supported structures and codec combinations differ, and a format name does not mean every file using it has the same tracks or will play on every device.

Does a container determine whether a video will play?
No. Playback depends on the actual contents of the file and the player. The container must be supported, and the player must also be able to handle the codecs used for the audio and video tracks. Subtitles and other track features may also matter for the experience you want.

If a file with a familiar extension will not play, check the specific container and the codecs used by its tracks rather than assuming the extension guarantees compatibility. For choosing a format, consider the target player or platform, required audio and subtitle tracks, and whether streaming or seeking matters. There is no universally best container for every use.
