For a resilient setup, protect the repository password, send backups to a destination separate from the computer being backed up, and verify that you can restore files.
What Restic protects—and what it does not
Restic’s design uses AES-256 in counter mode (CTR) to encrypt repository data and Poly1305-AES to authenticate it. The repository password is used with scrypt to derive keys; key files store information needed to derive the repository’s master keys. Without the password, stored file contents and metadata are not accessible, apart from informational metadata in key files, and tampering can be detected. See Restic’s design documentation for the project’s security assumptions and details.

Restic’s guarantee has limits. Its threat model assumes a trusted backup host, an authentic Restic binary, and that an attacker cannot obtain the repository password. It is not designed to prevent an attacker who can access the storage from deleting repository files. Encryption therefore does not make a backup ransomware-proof or deletion-proof. A separately controlled destination, restricted credentials, and provider retention controls may reduce other risks, but those depend on the service and configuration rather than Restic’s encryption.

The repository password is essential to recovering the data. Restic’s repository setup guide warns: “Losing your password means that your data is irrecoverably lost.” Store it in a secure password manager or another protected location that is separate from the repository, so losing access to the backup destination does not also mean losing the password.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
A password change is not a remedy for a leaked master key. Restic’s design documentation explains that a leaked key cannot simply be revoked; the repository must be re-encrypted to replace it. Treat suspected key exposure as a separate incident and follow Restic’s documented guidance rather than assuming that changing the password alone restores security.
Choose a destination that is genuinely off-site
Restic can write repositories to local filesystems and remote backends. A local repository can be useful as an additional copy, but a drive left beside the computer is not off-site. The project README puts the distinction plainly: “Saving a backup on the same machine is nice but not a real backup strategy.”

| Destination | What you need | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| SFTP over SSH | An SSH server and configured public-key access. | Passwordless login matters for unattended backups; you must operate or have access to the SSH host. |
| REST server | A separately configured REST server. Restic’s setup documentation covers HTTP or HTTPS and TLS certificate verification. | You are responsible for setting up and securing the server, unless someone else operates it for you. |
| Amazon S3 or S3-compatible storage | Storage credentials and the appropriate endpoint, region, or provider-specific settings. | Check the service’s current storage and retrieval charges, geography, and retention or deletion controls directly. |
| Other native backends | Restic lists Backblaze B2, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, and OpenStack Swift. | Setup details and service terms vary; confirm current availability and costs with the provider. |
Restic’s setup documentation describes backend configuration, while the project README lists supported options. The documentation does not establish a universally cheapest provider, current egress fees, geographic availability, or retention guarantees. Compare those details for the service and region you intend to use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When deciding, consider whether you can operate the backend, how automated jobs will authenticate, the cost and speed of restoring data, the distance between the destination and your computer, and whether the provider offers retention or deletion controls that fit your needs. Keep credentials for automated access as restricted as the service allows.

Set up the repository and run backups
The exact commands and configuration depend on the backend. Use Restic’s versioned instructions for your chosen destination; the following is an orientation, not a complete provider-specific configuration.
- Prepare remote access. For SFTP, configure SSH access first; for a REST repository, set up the server; for object storage, obtain credentials and identify the correct endpoint and region settings.
- Initialize the repository. Run
restic initwith the repository destination configured. Restic prompts you to enter the new password twice. - Create a snapshot. Configure the repository and password for the job, then run
restic backupon the files you intend to protect. The quick start walks through creating a snapshot. - Prove recovery works. Use
restic restoreto restore files to a chosen location, orrestic mountto access snapshot contents. Choose a restore test that reflects what you would need to recover; the documentation does not prescribe one universal testing schedule.
Check repository health and manage storage
Run restic check to examine repository data. If it reports unreferenced pack files, that can be harmless extra data left by an interrupted backup or upload, rather than proof that the repository is broken. Restic’s FAQ and reference documentation explains that restic prune can clean up such extra data.

Use restic forget when you want to remove snapshots according to a retention policy, and restic prune to remove data no longer needed by the repository. These operations affect what remains recoverable, so understand the selected snapshots and retention rules before pruning. A repository check and an actual restore answer different questions: whether repository data can be examined, and whether you can retrieve the files you need.
