If you want fewer interruptions but still want to be in the conversation, mute the chat. Leaving is a separate action: Meta confirms you can leave a group chat, but its help page does not say whether other members are notified or whether the exit can be hidden. Do not count on leaving quietly.
Mute, leave or remove: what each action does
| Action | What it does | What is established about visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Mute | Stops notifications for messages, reactions and mentions in the selected group chat. You remain a member. | Meta’s notification guidance describes the alert settings; it does not address whether muting is visible to other members. Meta Messenger Help Center |
| Leave | Exits the group chat. Meta says, “You can also leave a group chat on your own.” | The help page does not explain whether other members see a departure notice, so it cannot establish a silent exit. Meta Messenger Help Center |
| Admin removal | An admin removes another member from the group chat. | Meta says only group chat admins can remove someone. The cited page does not establish what notification, if any, the removed member or other participants receive. Meta Messenger Help Center |
How do I mute a Messenger group chat?
Use mute if the problem is interruptions rather than membership. Meta says turning off notifications for a group chat stops notifications about messages, reactions and mentions for that chat. Its desktop instructions include choosing how long to mute. The cited guidance does not establish that every app or device offers the same duration choices or menu labels.

Muting does not leave the chat: it is a notification setting, not a membership change.
How do I leave a Messenger group chat without anyone knowing?
Meta confirms that you can leave a group chat on your own, but the help page does not say whether the departure appears to other participants. It also does not establish whether behavior varies by app version, region or group type. Therefore, there is no basis here to promise that leaving is invisible.

Yes. Meta’s Messenger Help Center states: “Only group chat admins can remove someone from a group chat on Messenger.” The documented desktop route is:

Messenger group chats and Facebook Community Chats are different
Do not apply guidance for a regular Messenger group chat automatically to a Facebook group Community Chat. Meta describes Community Chats as a separate feature and says they will be going away soon. Its help page says that before deletion, chats will be paused: members will still be able to read messages, but sending will be disabled. No end date is stated in the cited page, so check Meta’s current Community Chats guidance for the status that applies now.
