They do different jobs, so the right choice depends on whether you need ongoing speed control, a gentler start, or basic switching with suitable protection.
What each motor control does
Variable frequency drive (VFD)
A VFD, also called an AC drive, varies the frequency and voltage supplied to an AC motor. That lets it control motor speed and torque during startup and normal operation. Choose this type when a process needs adjustable speed or torque after startup, or when the load can operate at less than full output at times. For example, a variable-load fan or pump may use less power when it does not need to run at full output, but any energy savings depend on the system and its operating profile.

In a basic VFD power path, incoming AC is converted to DC, then an inverter synthesizes adjustable AC output using pulse-width modulation. The drive must be matched to the motor, load, supply, and control requirements.

Soft starter
A soft starter reduces the voltage and current applied during acceleration. This can limit starting inrush and reduce mechanical stress. Some units also provide a controlled stop. Once startup is complete, the motor normally runs at the supply frequency, so a conventional soft starter does not provide continuous speed control.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It suits fixed-speed applications that need a less abrupt start—for example, a pump where pressure surges matter or a conveyor where sudden acceleration stresses the machinery. Reduced-voltage starting also reduces available starting torque. Confirm that the motor can produce enough torque to break away and accelerate the load; limiting current alone is not enough to size a soft starter. Required start frequency and duty also matter.
Contactor and across-the-line starting
A contactor is an electrically operated switch that repeatedly makes and breaks a motor power circuit. In an across-the-line arrangement, it applies full line voltage to the motor. This is a straightforward option when on/off operation is sufficient and the electrical supply and driven machine can tolerate the starting event.

A contactor is a component, not necessarily a complete protected starter. A motor starter commonly combines a contactor, which switches current, with an overload device that protects against excessive current and overheating. Eaton describes these distinct roles in its motor-starter overview.
Compare the options by the job
| If you need… | Likely choice | Check before selecting |
|---|---|---|
| Speed or torque control during normal operation | VFD | Compatibility with the motor, load, supply, and control requirements. |
| A gentler start followed by fixed-speed operation | Soft starter | Adequate starting torque, starting duty, and whether a controlled stop is required. |
| Simple motor on/off switching | Contactor-based starter | Appropriate overload protection and suitability of full-voltage starting. |
The choice is shaped by the electrical supply, motor, driven machine, and process—not just the motor’s power rating. AuCom’s motor-starting guide states: “The electrical supply determines how much starting current and voltage disturbance can be tolerated.” Its page does not show a named speaker or publication date.

Questions to answer before choosing a starter
- What motor are you controlling? Record its nameplate voltage, phase, horsepower or kilowatt rating, full-load amps, and service factor.
- What can the supply tolerate? Establish the available supply and acceptable starting current or voltage disturbance.
- Does the process need speed control after startup? If so, a conventional soft starter or contactor does not provide the VFD’s ongoing speed control.
- What does the load need to start? Consider breakaway torque, acceleration torque, inertia, and how often the motor starts.
- What else must the assembly do? Specify overload protection, control voltage, reversing, auxiliary contacts, enclosure, and environmental protections as needed.
- Do local rules or conditions add requirements? Check applicable electrical codes, hazardous-area requirements, safety rules, and product listings with a qualified electrical professional.
Eaton’s selection guidance also identifies voltage, phase, horsepower, full-load amps, service factor, starter type, control voltage, overload type, accessories, and enclosure as relevant considerations. Without the motor and application details, a specific device cannot be sized reliably.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make the decision
- Decide whether speed must change while running. If the process needs ongoing speed or torque control, evaluate a VFD.
- If speed stays fixed, decide whether startup needs control. If reducing startup stress is the goal, evaluate a soft starter and verify that its reduced starting torque is enough for the load.
- If neither is needed, assess simple switching. A contactor-based starter may fit, provided full-voltage starting is acceptable and the arrangement includes appropriate overload protection.
- Verify the complete application. Match the equipment to the motor nameplate, supply, load, start duty, protection needs, installation constraints, and applicable local requirements.
Manufacturer educational materials explain these functional differences and selection factors, but they do not establish a universal energy-savings figure, independently compare products, or determine whether a particular installation meets local code. Have a qualified electrical professional confirm equipment sizing and installation requirements.
