Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a lower-spec 64-bit PC, start by comparing Xubuntu and Linux Mint against your available memory and storage; consider antiX if the hardware is especially constrained and you are comfortable with its different system design. There is no universal winner: processor architecture, device compatibility, workload, and support needs matter as much as a distro’s published minimums. Those minimums indicate what may run, not whether modern browsing will feel smooth.
How to choose for your hardware
First check the machine’s CPU architecture, RAM, and free storage. Then consider whether you want a conventional desktop, what applications you need, and how much setup or maintenance you are willing to handle. A 32-bit processor cannot be assumed to run a distribution or edition that requires 64-bit hardware.

- Architecture and devices: Confirm processor support, firmware and boot capability, Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, suspend and resume, and peripherals such as a printer.
- Memory and storage: Compare minimum and recommended figures, and leave enough disk space for the system, applications, updates, and personal files.
- Workload: Web browsing can use substantial memory. A lightweight desktop does not guarantee that an old computer will handle many tabs, high-resolution video, or demanding applications well.
- Support and workflow: Check the current release and support information, and decide whether familiar desktop conventions or a more specialized setup matter more to you.
Do not treat published requirements as a speed ranking. No current, matched performance test establishes which of these distributions is fastest.

| Distribution | Published hardware guidance | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Xubuntu | 64-bit Intel or AMD processor; at least 1 GB RAM and 8.6 GB free disk space. Xubuntu recommends a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM, and 20 GB storage for smoother use with multiple applications. | Ubuntu-based, with the Xfce desktop. It is a practical conventional desktop option, but its requirements do not promise smooth performance for heavy browsing. Xubuntu download and requirements |
| Linux Mint | The FAQ lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space, and recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk. It also lists 1024×768 display resolution. | A free desktop and laptop operating system whose FAQ describes it as easy to use and configurable. The FAQ figures are not edition-specific. Linux Mint says its LTS releases receive five years of support. Linux Mint FAQ |
| antiX | The project recommends a minimum of 512 MB RAM and lists 7 GB as the minimum hard disk size. Its page reports antiX-26.1 images for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. | Based on Debian Stable, antiX is designed without systemd or elogind. Its design and workflow differ from standard beginner-oriented desktop choices; these figures do not establish comparative ease of use or speed. antiX About page |
| Lubuntu | Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 guidance points to Lubuntu or Xubuntu for lower-spec systems, including computers with 2 GB RAM or more. Separate current Lubuntu requirements are not stated in that guidance. | Do not rely on numeric requirements from the deprecated Lubuntu community wiki, which contains outdated information. Ubuntu 26.04 release notes |
| MX Linux | Xfce documentation lists 2 GB RAM and at least 10 GB free disk space. | Xfce describes MX Linux as a Debian Stable-based “midweight” system. The figures come from Xfce documentation, not a complete, current official MX Linux installation requirements page. Xfce documentation |
What the requirements mean in practice
Ubuntu Desktop and its lighter flavors
Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes specify a 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB RAM, and 25 GB free storage for a comfortable Ubuntu Desktop experience. Canonical points people with lower-spec computers toward Xubuntu or Lubuntu, including systems with 2 GB RAM or more. The 6 GB and 25 GB figures apply to Ubuntu Desktop; they are not full requirements for each flavor.

Minimum is not the same as comfortable
Xubuntu lists 1 GB RAM as a minimum but recommends 2 GB for smoother use with multiple applications. Linux Mint’s FAQ lists 2 GB and recommends 4 GB. If the computer has little memory, the number of browser tabs and other open applications may matter more than the desktop choice.
Check current guidance before installing
Requirements and release details can change. Confirm the current download page and release notes for the exact edition you intend to install rather than carrying old figures forward. In particular, Lubuntu’s older community wiki is marked deprecated, so its legacy LXDE specifications are not a sound basis for a current installation decision.

Try the system before replacing your current setup
A live USB or DVD can reveal whether the distribution works with the hardware you rely on. Xubuntu explicitly supports trying its system before installation, though it notes that a live session runs more slowly than an installed system.

- Check compatibility first. Confirm the computer’s processor architecture and whether it can boot from USB or DVD. Identify any hardware or applications you cannot do without.
- Prepare installation media. Use the distribution’s official download instructions to create a USB or DVD installer. Ubuntu’s installation guidance describes ISO-based installation media. Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 release information
- Boot a live session, where available. Test Wi-Fi or Ethernet, graphics, sound, sleep and resume, and the peripherals you use. Check whether essential applications are available and work as expected.
- Back up important files. Do this before changing partitions or starting an installation; installing can modify or erase data on the selected drive.
- Install only when the checks pass. Follow the chosen distribution’s current installer guidance and verify the target disk and partition choices before confirming them.
Which one should you try first?
- Choose Xubuntu as a starting point if you want an Ubuntu-based Xfce desktop and the computer meets its published guidance, especially its 2 GB recommended RAM for smoother multi-application use.
- Try Linux Mint if its desktop and support approach suit you and the machine can meet the FAQ’s requirements. Check the exact edition and current download information rather than assuming the general FAQ figures are edition-specific.
- Consider antiX when memory or processor constraints are severe, including if 32-bit support is important. Be prepared for a system design that differs from more conventional desktop choices.
- Evaluate Lubuntu or MX Linux using their current official installation materials. The cited Ubuntu guidance supports Lubuntu as an option for lower-spec systems, while the cited MX figures are a representative list from Xfce documentation rather than complete current installation guidance.
