A burner email address is a substitute address used for a limited purpose, such as receiving a signup or confirmation message without sharing your primary email. It may be a short-lived inbox that expires or a persistent alias that forwards messages to you. The term is used loosely, so check how a particular service handles access, forwarding and retention.
What “burner email” means
There is no single formal technical definition that separates “burner,” “disposable” and “temporary” email. In everyday use, all three can refer to an address intended to keep a one-off interaction separate from your main inbox. Providers differ in whether you can send mail, how long messages remain available and whether the address itself expires. Privacy International describes disposable email services as addresses that either forward messages to a regular inbox or exist only for a limited period.

Temporary inbox or persistent alias?
The key difference is whether you need the address to keep working after the initial signup. A temporary inbox may be suitable for a one-time confirmation; an alias is usually more practical for an account you intend to keep because it can continue forwarding future verification or recovery messages.
| Type | How it works | Best suited to | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary inbox | Receives messages for a limited period or until discarded. Some services are receive-only; retention and access rules vary. | One-time confirmations, low-stakes signups or testing your own email flow | If the inbox or address disappears, you may not receive later verification or password-reset messages. Some inboxes may also be accessible to others. |
| Persistent alias or mask | Acts as a forwarding address that hides your primary email while delivering incoming messages to it. | Ongoing accounts where you want future correspondence without exposing your main address | The service must process routing information and may handle message content or metadata; privacy and retention terms depend on the provider. |
For example, AdGuard says its temporary inbox is receive-only, may be deleted when a new address is generated, and can be removed after inactivity or extended use. Those are AdGuard-specific rules, not a standard lifespan for temporary email. The Associated Press describes email-masking services such as DuckDuckGo Email Protection, Firefox Relay, Fastmail, Addy.io, SimpleLogin and Apple Hide My Email; check current availability and features before relying on any service.

When a burner address makes sense
- Receiving a one-time confirmation for a low-stakes signup.
- Trying a product once or accessing gated material when you do not want ongoing email.
- Signing up for a newsletter you do not plan to keep receiving.
- Testing signup and transactional email flows that you operate.
For a social-media account or any other account you may want to retain, the important question is whether you can keep access to the address. A persistent alias is generally more suitable than an inbox that could expire, particularly if the account may require future verification or a password reset.
When not to use one
A short-lived or publicly accessible inbox is a poor choice for banking, medical, financial or other sensitive accounts, and for any account where losing access could matter. The site may reject disposable domains, and the provider may delete the address or messages without a recovery option. Choose an address you control for as long as you need the account.

Follow the receiving service’s terms and applicable law. Providers may prohibit using disposable addresses for fraud, impersonation, evading limits or repeatedly claiming free trials and promotional rewards; check the specific service’s rules rather than assuming a burner address makes a use permissible.
Does a burner email make you anonymous or untraceable?
No. It can reduce one direct connection between a website and your primary email address, but it does not by itself make you anonymous. The email provider may process or log routing information, message content or metadata. Privacy International notes that providers may log or share usage data, and that some websites reject disposable addresses when they require a verified account.

Forwarding also involves processing: the service has to route mail, and its privacy practices determine what it may retain. Burner Mail, for example, says it processes messages during forwarding, may keep operational logs and does not provide end-to-end encryption for ordinary internet email. That describes one provider, not every alias service. Review the provider’s current privacy and retention policies before using it.
Some temporary inboxes are not private from other users. A provider may make addresses unreserved or accessible to anyone who knows or guesses them during the retention window. Do not use such an inbox for sensitive information unless you have verified that access and handling are appropriate.
