A Chinese research team has reported a hydrogel that changes its shape over time when exposed to near-infrared light. The material is a laboratory research result—not a smart-device product—and its proposed uses in robotics and medicine remain prospective.
What the team made
Researchers led by Du Xuemin at the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, describe an approach called spatiotemporally evolving reactive species, or STERS. Their system combines gallium-based liquid-metal particles with acrylamide and acrylic acid monomers, using near-infrared (NIR) light to drive changes in the hydrogel. The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ account describes the material’s shape as evolving rather than simply switching between two fixed forms.

How the shape change works
The reported mechanism begins with NIR light creating spatial and temporal gradients in reactive species within the system. Those changing chemical conditions drive the hydrogel’s evolving morphology. In other words, light is used to establish a changing pattern in the material; the reported concept is not merely that the gel bends whenever it is illuminated.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Chinese Academy of Sciences describes the evolution as spanning “minutes to weeks.” That is a range reported for the work, not a single response-time benchmark or a promise that every sample or configuration changes on the same schedule. South China Morning Post coverage says the peer-reviewed study appeared in Matter on September 4, 2026. The team’s statement, as reproduced by the newspaper, describes programmable changes across microscopic to macroscopic scales and single to multiple transformation cycles.

What “lifelike” means—and what it does not
Here, “lifelike” refers to a material whose form evolves over time in response to changing internal conditions. It does not establish that the hydrogel is alive, senses its surroundings like an organism, or can operate independently as a device. The reports describe a material system and a light-driven chemical mechanism, not a finished smart-device component.
Potential applications are still prospective
The Chinese Academy of Sciences identifies robotics, regenerative medicine, and brain-machine interfaces as areas the work could inform. The South China Morning Post also mentions flexible tissue-engineering scaffolds and humanlike robots. These are possible directions, not evidence of a deployed robot, a clinical treatment, an implant, or a working brain-computer interface that uses this hydrogel.

The available reports do not establish the material’s biocompatibility, safety, durability, manufacturing scale, or cost. They also do not provide enough detail to rank it against other shape-changing materials or judge how readily it could be integrated into a practical device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to watch for next
For a smart-device application, the key questions are whether researchers can control the shape change reliably, repeat it as needed, and integrate the material with other components. The current reporting establishes the STERS concept and its reported ingredients and light-driven mechanism; it does not answer those engineering and readiness questions.
