Chess.com supports electronic boards, but says the board’s manufacturer is the source for model compatibility and setup help. Check your board model and its documented Chess.com connection route before changing settings or resetting anything.
Identify where the connection fails
Write down the board maker and exact model, your phone, tablet or computer model, its operating system, the app or integration you are using, and the step at which setup stops. Then identify the documented connection route: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, a companion app, a browser extension or another bridge. Chess.com’s general support for electronic boards does not establish compatibility or setup steps for every model; it advises contacting the manufacturer for those details.

- Board does not appear in its maker’s app: troubleshoot power, connection mode, permissions and pairing between the board and device.
- Maker’s app sees the board, but Chess.com does not: check the app’s Chess.com account/site selection, authorization or integration workflow.
- Board and integration are set up, but games disconnect or fail to start: investigate the device’s internet route, browser or app, and Chess.com session.
Check power and local board detection
Make sure the board is on and in the connection mode specified in its own manual. Open the manufacturer’s app or documented integration and check whether it detects the board before troubleshooting Chess.com. If it does not, follow the maker’s pairing instructions and any permissions they specify. Avoid a factory reset or firmware change unless the instructions for your exact model call for it.
Bluetooth pairing is not one universal process. For example, Chessnut’s app manual instructs users to initiate connection from the app rather than manually pairing in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Its Move quick guide describes a flashing Bluetooth indicator during pairing and a solid indicator after connection. Those directions apply to Chessnut products, not automatically to other brands. Use the relevant Chessnut guides only if you have a Chessnut board; otherwise use your own manufacturer’s instructions.

Confirm the Chess.com app or integration is authorized
A board can be connected locally to a phone or computer without being connected to an active Chess.com game. If the manufacturer’s app detects the board, check its account, site selection and connection or authorization settings. Start a new game through the maker’s documented Chess.com route, then check whether moves register in both places.
If the app sees the board but offers no Chess.com integration for your model, or its instructions do not explain the connection, ask the board maker to confirm compatibility and the supported setup. Chess.com directs smart-board owners to manufacturers for precisely this model-specific guidance.

Troubleshoot the device’s route to Chess.com
Board-to-device pairing and device-to-Chess.com connectivity are separate links. A phone can remain connected to Wi-Fi while its route to a live-game server is interrupted. For web play, Chess.com recommends reducing competing activity and checking the browser; for mobile play, it recommends closing other apps and keeping the operating system and Chess.com app current. See Chess.com’s disconnect and lag guidance for its full troubleshooting suggestions.

For Chess.com in a web browser
- Pause downloads, uploads and video streams; close excess tabs and resource-heavy programs.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions that could interfere, and update the browser.
- Clear cookies and cache if the site is behaving abnormally.
- Try a wired connection if available, or move closer to the router to improve the device’s Wi-Fi connection.
For the Chess.com mobile app
- Close other apps and update both the operating system and Chess.com app.
- If cellular service is unstable, try Wi-Fi; avoid switching between Wi-Fi and cellular during a game.
- Reinstall the app only if simpler checks fail. Chess.com’s DNS suggestion is framed for matchmaking problems after other steps; changing DNS is not a Bluetooth-pairing fix.
Check ping if live games are disconnecting
Chess.com says you can enter /ping in the board console from the lobby at chess.com/play/online, or in the chat box during an active game. Take several readings with short pauses because the first may be slower. The command does not work while observing a game. Ping can help assess the game connection; it does not test whether the board is paired to your device.

Chess.com’s broader performance guidance also recommends rebooting the modem or router, testing connection speed, and waiting 5–10 seconds for its automatic reconnect before refreshing. For advanced diagnosis, it suggests running ping or traceroute to live.chess.com and sharing the results with support. Read Chess.com’s connection-performance guidance.
Keep live-game disconnects in perspective
A strong Wi-Fi indicator does not prove that a live Chess.com session is intact: the device may still reach its router while losing the route to the game server. Chess.com lists switching between Wi-Fi and cellular, backgrounding the app, and device or browser performance among possible causes of disconnects. Its help page says the abandonment timer is 10% of the base time plus 40 times the increment, bounded between 30 seconds and three minutes, and starts when it is the disconnected player’s turn. This concerns live-game abandonment, not the board’s local pairing state. See Chess.com’s explanation of abandoned games.

Chess.com reported on July 28, 2026, that more than 99.7% of its live games run on its Realtime Chess Network, hosted across regional server groups in Virginia, Oregon, Mumbai and the Netherlands. That is an infrastructure figure, not a measure of e-board reliability or a guarantee that a particular connection will work better. Read Chess.com’s dated RCN overview.

Contact Chess.com or your internet provider
If the manufacturer’s app detects the board and its Chess.com integration is authorized, but Chess.com games still fail or disconnect, collect the Chess.com app or browser version and any ping readings. Use Chess.com support for a site or game-session problem; contact your internet provider if connection trouble persists after Chess.com’s recommended network checks.
If you need to replace the board
Consider a replacement only after confirming that the current board is unsupported, faulty or unsuitable. Before buying, ask the maker to confirm support for Chess.com and your intended play mode, the connection method for your host device, whether its app or a separate bridge is required, operating-system and permission requirements, and how firmware updates and support are handled. Chess.com does not endorse or rank a particular board in its general smart-board guidance.
