There is no confirmed universal rule to upgrade talismans before other gear—or the reverse—in Minecraft Dungeons II. Talismans add passive bonuses and build customization, while the official upgrade guidance specifically describes upgrading enchantments applied to gear slots. Check what your current build lacks, then prioritize the available effect that best addresses that need. Treat this as a practical decision method, not a developer-prescribed ranking.
What talismans do compared with other gear
Minecraft describes talismans as a new equipment category that provides passive bonuses and additional build customization. Mojang Design Director Laura de Llorens likewise called them “passive boosts” in an official Xbox Wire podcast.

The wider equipment system is larger than in the first game: the official gameplay-systems overview says combat slots expand from six to twelve, and armor is divided into a helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots. Items can also have random effects. Those details make build fit more useful than a blanket talisman-first rule: a passive bonus has to be considered alongside the rest of the equipment and effects available to your character.

The official description explains a specific enchantment progression system. Enchantment books add unique enchantments to a personal library, and the local Enchantsmith applies those enchantments to a gear slot of your choice. Enchantments can be upgraded over time.

That is not the same as saying the talisman item itself can be upgraded. The official systems information does not establish whether talismans are upgradeable, give a complete comparison of upgrade costs and returns, or prescribe an order for investing resources in talismans versus weapons, armor, or other equipment. Check the current in-game screen for the options and costs actually available to you; do not assume enchantment-upgrade rules also apply to talisman items.

- Identify the immediate problem. Decide what is holding your build back in the encounters you are playing. Compare the available upgrades by whether their actual effects address that problem.
- Check build fit. Favor an effect that supports your chosen combat style over one that sounds powerful but does little for how you play.
- Consider combinations. Look at how an effect works alongside your other gear and enchantments. A useful combination may be more valuable to your build than either effect considered alone.
- Compare the displayed cost and trade-off. Use the current in-game upgrade screen to weigh each option against the resources you would spend elsewhere. Published official materials do not provide a universal cost-versus-benefit comparison.
What the demo example shows—and what it does not
An Xbox Wire hands-on report from June 10, 2026 described a demo with three talisman slots and a bone talisman that summoned a dog companion, which attacked enemies and drew their attention. The report also showed the talisman alongside an enchantment that could create regeneration spots when enemies were killed.
This is an illustration of possible synergy, not evidence that the companion talisman is best for every build or that the demo’s slots and item behavior are unchanged in the released game. Use the effects and slot information shown in your current version.

What is confirmed about the released game
Minecraft announced September 29, 2026 as the release date. Its launch announcement lists Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The available evidence establishes the talismans’ role and enchantment upgrades, but not a universal talisman-versus-gear upgrade order.
