For Chess.com, the practical choice depends on which DGT board you mean. Chess.com supports electronic boards generally, but says compatibility and setup depend on the board’s manufacturer. DGT Pegasus is the wireless model described for online play; its manual says Chess.com games must be started through the Chess.com app. The traditional DGT Serial e-Board is a separate, wired tournament-style product that needs separately purchased connection material for individual online use, and its older manual does not establish a current Chess.com setup.
First, what does “Chess.com e-Board” mean?
Chess.com does not identify a single Chess.com-branded physical e-board in its support guidance. Its Help Center says electronic boards are supported in general, while directing players to the manufacturer to confirm compatibility and get setup help. That means “Chess.com e-Board” is best read as an electronic board used to play on Chess.com, not as a specific model with guaranteed compatibility.

The exact board-and-app combination matters. A board that connects to one chess app is not automatically supported in another, and Chess.com’s general support statement is not a guarantee for every electronic board. DGT’s Pegasus manual supplies a specific Chess.com route; the Serial e-Board manual does not.

Which DGT board is intended for online play?
DGT Pegasus: wireless play
DGT lists Pegasus as a wireless Bluetooth chessboard and says the DGT Chess app is required. Its official listing gives a board size of 35 × 35 × 2 cm, 40 mm squares, and a 3.7 V, 1,000 mAh lithium-ion battery. The listed package includes the board, USB charging cable, 34 pieces (32 plus two extra queens), a drawstring bag, phone stand, quick guide, and technical data sheet. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.

- DGT Timeless pieces with extra queens included
- USB connection
- Digital / Electronic chess set
The Pegasus manual instructs users to install DGT Chess, enable Bluetooth, switch on the board, select a platform and board, and set up a game. It makes an important distinction for Chess.com: Playing via Chess.com is only possible directly via the Chess.com app.
In other words, do not assume Chess.com play can be launched from DGT Chess. Check the current Chess.com app and DGT instructions for your phone before buying, since app interfaces and device support can change.
DGT Serial e-Board: wired computer setup
The Serial e-Board is a different product category: a larger, wired board designed to act as an input device for a computer program, website, or DGT Pi. DGT’s 2019 manual says individual use, including online play or recording games, requires “Connection Material 1st Serial Board,” purchased separately. Its documented PlayChess workflow uses Fritz software and DGT drivers. The manual also says website setup requirements vary, so that workflow should not be treated as proof of a current Chess.com connection method.

- Chess computer Centaur is a beautiful chess board that adjusts to your level of play
- Impressive looking weighted pieces and on board lighted display within the squares themselves
- Engage you in a fully contained, highly-tactical chess play experience
- Whether you're a beginner, strong player, home or club player, Centaur will adjust to your level as you play
- Board Size: 17.5 x 15.8" (444.5 x 400.5mm) Square Size: 1.9" (48 x 48mm) King Height: 3 3/8” (86mm)
The same manual lists dimensions of 540 × 540 mm, 55 × 55 mm squares, and a board-only weight of 4.2 kg. These figures help explain why the Serial e-Board is not simply a larger version of portable Pegasus: it is a heavier, computer-dependent setup associated with tournament-style use.

How the options compare
| Option | Connection and Chess.com route | Setup dependency | Size and portability |
|---|---|---|---|
| DGT Pegasus | Bluetooth wireless; DGT’s manual says Chess.com play is only possible through the Chess.com app. | DGT Chess app is required for use; follow the manual’s app-specific Chess.com instruction and verify current phone support. | 35 × 35 × 2 cm, 40 mm squares; battery and accessories are listed by DGT. |
| DGT Serial e-Board | Wired computer-connected input device; its manual does not establish a current Chess.com workflow. | Separate “Connection Material 1st Serial Board” is required for individual online use; the manual’s PlayChess example uses Fritz and DGT drivers. | 540 × 540 mm, 55 mm squares, 4.2 kg board-only, per the 2019 manual. |
| Other electronic boards used with Chess.com | Chess.com supports electronic boards in general; model-specific compatibility is not stated by Chess.com. | Confirm the precise model and setup with its manufacturer. | Not stated by Chess.com. |
Which should you choose?
- Choose Pegasus if you want a wireless board and are comfortable playing Chess.com through its app, subject to checking current compatibility with your phone.
- Consider the Serial e-Board if you specifically want a wired, larger tournament-style board and are prepared to use a computer and obtain the separate connection material. Do not buy it on the assumption that its older PlayChess directions guarantee Chess.com support.
- For another smart board, verify the manufacturer’s exact Chess.com instructions before purchase rather than relying on Chess.com’s general support statement.
There is no controlled performance comparison here that establishes one board as faster, more reliable, or better at online play. The meaningful distinction is the supported route into the service and the setup each model requires.

What about using a DGT Centaur?
A community project, DGT Centaur Mods, describes a modification that can make a Centaur enter Pegasus-emulation mode and work with Pegasus-compatible apps. The project page is dated October 6, 2023. This is a specialized, community-maintained modification—not standard Centaur functionality or a DGT support promise—so it is not an out-of-the-box substitute for Pegasus.
