A phone’s 5G label does not guarantee it will connect to 5G on your chosen carrier. Check the exact model and regional variant, compare its supported bands with the carrier’s network, run the carrier’s compatibility check, and confirm coverage, plan access, and unlock status.
What determines whether your phone can use 5G?
Compatibility is specific to both the phone and the carrier. The device must support the network’s required frequency band and radio technology; it must also be accepted by the carrier. Even a compatible phone needs 5G coverage at your location and a plan that includes access.

How to check your phone’s 5G compatibility

Find the exact model and variant
Check the model number in the phone’s settings or on its packaging, then look up the manufacturer’s specifications for that specific model. Regional and carrier variants can support different bands, so a product-family name alone is not enough.

Check the target carrier’s device checker
Use the carrier’s IMEI or bring-your-own-device checker. T-Mobile provides an IMEI Status Check and BYOD compatibility checker. Treat the result as a carrier-specific eligibility check; it does not replace comparing the exact model’s supported bands.

Compare the phone’s bands with the carrier’s 5G network
Use the carrier’s network information and the manufacturer’s specifications. The relevant bands depend on the carrier and the kind of 5G service you want. A phone can support some 5G bands without supporting every layer offered by a network.

Check coverage and plan access for your locations
Look up the places where you expect to use 5G, including home and work, using the carrier’s coverage information. Confirm that your plan includes 5G access. A supported band cannot provide service where the network is unavailable.

Check whether the phone is carrier locked
A locked device is restricted to its current carrier. AT&T explains how to check a device’s lock status in its carrier-lock guide; the exact settings wording can vary by model and software version. An unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with another carrier: band support and carrier acceptance still need to be checked.

Which 5G bands should you look for?
Band requirements vary by network and service layer. T-Mobile’s network information identifies n71 for Extended Range 5G. It lists n2/n25, n41, n258, n260, and n261 for Ultra Capacity 5G. T-Mobile also says that a device must support the relevant network frequency band and technology to connect. See its 5G network information and compare it with the specifications for your exact phone.
AT&T says mid-band 5G+ requires n77 support, while its high-band 5G+ requires n260. The high-band service is described as available at select airports, stadiums, venues, and other locations, rather than everywhere. AT&T also requires coverage, a plan with 5G access, and a capable device. Its 5G and 5G+ FAQ provides the carrier’s current explanation.

Matching a band is necessary for the corresponding network layer, but it does not by itself confirm that the carrier will accept the phone or that service is available where you need it.

What to do if the checks disagree
- The phone lists the right bands, but the checker rejects it: Confirm the model number and variant, then contact the carrier to clarify its eligibility result. A band match alone is not proof of carrier acceptance.
- The checker approves the phone, but 5G does not appear: Check coverage at your current location and verify that your plan includes 5G. The approval result does not establish that 5G is available everywhere.
- The phone is locked to another carrier: Ask the current carrier about unlocking. After unlocking, still verify the target carrier’s bands and compatibility result.
- The phone connects to 5G but not the layer you expected: Recheck support for the relevant band. Different service layers can require different bands, such as n77 for AT&T mid-band 5G+ or n260 for its high-band service.
How to check before buying a replacement
Compare phones by their exact model and regional variant, not just by the name on the box or the general claim that they support 5G. Before purchase, check the target carrier’s bands, run its compatibility checker where possible, verify lock status, and review coverage and plan conditions for your locations.

For example, AT&T’s Motorola Edge 2026 listing identifies n77 support, including AT&T 5G+ n77 C-Band and n77 3.45 GHz. That is a specification example, not a guarantee of eligibility or availability for every buyer; check the exact device and carrier result before relying on it.
