Check Whether Your NETGEAR Extender Shares Your WiFi Password

See where to check your NETGEAR extender’s WiFi password, how to reach its settings page, and what to do if you cannot sign in.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To find the WiFi password your NETGEAR extender uses, connect to the extender, open www.mywifiext.net in a browser, sign in, and go to Settings > Wireless. Under General, check WiFi Password: it will show whether the extender shares your router’s password or uses a separate one.

The WiFi password is for connecting phones and computers. The administrator username and password are different; they let you open the extender’s settings.

Find the WiFi password in extender settings

  1. Connect your phone or computer to the extender’s network.
  2. Open a browser and go to www.mywifiext.net.
  3. Sign in with the administrator credentials you chose during setup.
  4. Select Settings > Wireless, then look under General for WiFi Password.

If the setting reads Same as existing network password, use the main router’s WiFi password to connect to the extender’s network. If it reads Use a different password, check the displayed Security Type and Network Key for the extender’s connection details. NETGEAR’s documented menu path and labels may vary by model; if yours differs, consult the support page or manual for that model.

If the extender settings page will not open

The address to use depends on whether the extender and router have the same network name (SSID). NETGEAR’s instructions say to use mywifiext.com when their SSIDs differ. If they share an SSID, use the extender’s IP address to reach its settings.

#1 Best Overall
NETGEAR WiFi Extender EX6120, up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.2 Gbps
  • DEAD ZONES, ELIMINATED: Bring WiFi 5 to the rooms your router cannot reach - bedrooms, garage, basement, and backyard - with up to 1,500 sq. ft. of added coverage for up to 25 devices, from any wall outlet
  • EASY SET UP: Use the NETGEAR Nighthawk app for guided setup, or press WPS on your router and the extender
  • STREAM AND BROWSE WITHOUT BUFFERING: Keep HD video, calls, and everyday devices smooth where signal was weak, with up to 1.2 Gbps (AC1200) across the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Real-world speeds vary depending on connected devices and internet plan
  • WIRED CONNECTION WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST: Connect a smart TV, game console, or desktop straight to the extender for a stable wired link. This is a 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet port, not Gigabit
  • WORKS WITH THE ROUTER YOU ALREADY HAVE: Connects to any router or gateway from Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T, Cox, or Verizon and rebroadcasts its signal. It extends your router, it does not replace it, with no closed ecosystem to lock you in

Make sure your device is connected to the extender before opening its management page. If you do not know the extender’s IP address or the documented address does not work, check the instructions for your specific model.

WiFi password versus administrator password

Credential What it is for Where to find or use it
WiFi password or network key Connects a phone, computer, or other device to the wireless network. View the extender’s wireless settings at Settings > Wireless > General.
Administrator username and password Signs in to the extender’s settings page. Use the credentials selected during setup; they are not the WiFi password.

NETGEAR’s FAQ lists admin and password as default web-interface credentials for some extenders, but do not assume these work for every model. Defaults vary, and newer products require an administrator password to be changed. Use the credentials set during setup when available.

If you cannot sign in to the extender

First try the administrator credentials chosen during setup and check the sign-in page for a password-recovery link. If the login still fails, NETGEAR’s guidance is to reset the extender as a last resort. A factory reset deletes personalized settings, including the username, password, network name (SSID), and security settings; you will need to configure the extender again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset as a last resort

  1. Locate the recessed Reset or Factory Reset button on the extender.
  2. Use a straightened paper clip or similarly sized object to press and hold it.
  3. Release the button when the Power LED blinks.
  4. Set up the extender again using the instructions for your model.

NETGEAR describes NETGEAR_EXT as the default setup SSID in its documented setup guidance, but setup behavior and network names depend on model and configuration. The extender may share the original network’s password or use a separate one, so verify the saved settings rather than assuming one applies universally.
