1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo find out whether an academic peer reviewer is reviewing now, look for a current assignment marked in progress in the journal’s editorial system. To verify recent completed work, ask for a dated activity report or confirmation from the journal. A public profile or review certificate can support a history of reviewing, but does not prove that someone has an active assignment today.
First decide what “still reviewing” means
There are two different questions: whether someone has an active manuscript assignment now, and whether they completed reviews recently. An accepted invitation shows an assignment in progress; a dated completion record shows finished work. An invitation that is still pending, a submitted review, and a public recognition record are different stages, so do not treat them as interchangeable.

There is no universal recency cutoff established across scholarly publishing. If you mean recent activity, define the period you want to check—for example, reviews completed in the past year—and use that same period when comparing records.
How to verify current or recent activity
-
Check for an active assignment
Ask the reviewer to show an accepted assignment marked in progress in the journal’s editorial system, including its current due date. If the assignment is confidential, ask the journal office to confirm it instead. For journals connected to Editorial Manager, Elsevier’s Reviewer Hub lists invitations, pending reviews, deadlines, and review history. Accepted invitations move to “Reviews in Progress”; the status generally appears almost instantly, though it may take a few minutes. Elsevier Reviewer Hub guidance.

-
Request dated evidence of completed reviews
For recent completed work, request an activity report covering a defined date range. Elsevier’s Reviewer History Report can be customized by date range and includes journals reviewed, completed-review counts, manuscript titles, and completion dates. A dated record is more informative about recency than a lifetime total. Elsevier Reviewer History Report guidance.
-
Use public records as corroboration
An ORCID peer-review record can corroborate activity when a participating publisher supplies the information. Elsevier says reviewers cannot enter these records manually themselves. Some Elsevier journals also recognize reviewers in annual editorials. These records may show past activity, but they are not necessarily current or comprehensive. Ask the journal if records do not line up
If a profile or report appears incomplete, check for another Editorial Manager account or a different email address associated with the reviewer. Elsevier identifies multiple accounts and data that need refreshing as reasons activity can be missing; its guidance describes account consolidation and refreshing reviewer data as remedies. Which evidence is strongest?
| Evidence | What it can establish | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Current in-progress assignment | Direct evidence that the reviewer has an active assignment in that journal system. | It does not establish work for other publishers or show that a review has been completed. |
| Dated publisher activity report | Completed work during the report’s stated date range. | May be incomplete if activity is split across accounts or records have not been refreshed. |
| Publisher-backed ORCID record or journal acknowledgment | Corroboration of recorded or publicly recognized review activity. | May not be real-time, complete, or proof of a current assignment. |
| Old certificate or self-reported profile | A claim or record of previous reviewing. | By itself, it does not establish recent or current activity. |
Account for the limits of publisher systems
Reviewer Hub is connected to almost all journals using Editorial Manager, according to Elsevier; it is not a universal record of peer-review work across publishers or editorial systems. A missing entry therefore does not prove that someone is inactive. Confirm the relevant journal and system before drawing conclusions. Elsevier’s description of Reviewer Hub.

Keep the evidence aligned with the question: an in-progress assignment for activity now, a report with completion dates for recent work, and public records only as corroboration. Elsevier describes reviewers as evaluating submissions and advising editors on suitability for publication, while the editor retains the final decision. Elsevier’s overview of peer review.
