A file can indicate that its own format encrypts its contents, if that format defines a way to identify it. But encryption applied beneath the file system or by a storage service is outside the file’s format, so the file itself generally cannot confirm whether that stored copy is protected.
The distinction matters if you are designing a security label or reading file metadata: say which layer the indicator describes. “Encrypted at rest” describes protection for stored data; it is not, by itself, a universal property that every file can report.

What does “encrypted at rest” mean?
Encryption at rest protects data while it is stored, such as on disk or backup media. Google Cloud uses this definition in its overview of default encryption at rest. Microsoft likewise describes encryption on disk as a way to help prevent access to stored data in its Azure data encryption guidance.
It describes a state of the data and a protection mechanism—not necessarily a feature that travels with a file. Whether an indicator can truthfully report encryption depends on where the encryption happens and what that indicator can inspect.

- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
Which layer performs the encryption?
Inside the file format
Some formats or applications encrypt the file’s contents. That protection belongs to the file or application layer. A format may provide a way to identify that a document is encrypted, but the exact signal is format-specific; there is no universal field established here that applies to every file type.
Beneath the file system or in the storage service
Encryption can instead be handled below the file system or by a managed storage service. Microsoft’s Azure File Sync planning documentation distinguishes beneath-file-system encryption from encryption within a file format. Azure Files describes its at-rest encryption as operating beneath the file share’s file system, while Amazon FSx for OpenZFS says data and metadata are encrypted before being written and decrypted before they are presented to the application (AWS FSx for OpenZFS documentation).

With transparent storage encryption, an authorized application may read ordinary, usable file contents even though the persisted copy is encrypted. The file’s bytes as presented to that application do not necessarily reveal the storage service’s current encryption status.

Both layers together
File-format and storage-layer encryption can coexist. Microsoft Learn puts it plainly: “These methods aren’t mutually exclusive. You can choose to use them together because the purpose of encryption is different.” One layer can protect the file’s contents independently of the infrastructure that stores it; the other can protect data as it is persisted by that infrastructure.

- Protection against brute force password attacks - Data is automatically erased after 6 unsuccessful access attempts. The data of the USB flash drive type c encryption with dual connectors is destroyed and the cryptographic drive is reset.
- Durable dual-layer waterproof design* — Protects the crypto reader from bumps, drops, run-in and immersion in water. The electronics are protected by a hardened internal case. Rubberized silicone outer case provides a final layer of protection.
- Auto-Lock —The cryptographic key automatically encrypts all data and locks when removed from a PC/Mac or when screen protection or "computer lock" is enabled.
- Secure Entry —Data on these flash drives cannot be accessed without the correct alphanumeric password of 8 to 16 characters. A password indication option is available for this flash drive. The hint cannot match the password.
What can a file-level indicator honestly claim?
A marker controlled by a file format or application can report that the file is encrypted according to that format’s rules. It should not be treated as proof that the storage medium or service encrypts the file at rest. That is an inference from the separation between file-format and storage-layer protection: a file cannot establish a guarantee about a layer it does not control unless the system explicitly links the marker to verified storage status.
The reverse is also important: a file without a format-level encryption marker may still be stored on infrastructure that encrypts its underlying data. The absence of a file-level signal does not establish that storage encryption is absent.

The reviewed provider documentation does not specify a universal metadata field, API, or sidecar convention for arbitrary files to report their current at-rest status. Any implementation should therefore be tied to a named format, application, storage service, and verification mechanism rather than presented as a cross-format guarantee.
How is at-rest encryption different from encryption in transit?
At-rest encryption concerns stored data. Encryption in transit concerns data while it moves between a client and a file system or service. AWS makes this distinction in its Amazon EFS encryption documentation, treating encryption of stored file-system data separately from protection as data travels between clients and the file system. A status indicator should identify which data state it describes.

What should a security label or implementation specify?
For a useful and defensible claim, identify the layer and the evidence behind it. Consider these questions before displaying a status:
- Encryption boundary: Is encryption inside the file format, beneath the file system, or handled by the storage service?
- Coverage: Does it cover file contents, metadata, or both? Coverage varies; Google’s overview says metadata protection is outside that document’s focus, while the FSx for OpenZFS description explicitly includes data and metadata.
- Key control: Who manages the keys, what customer-managed options exist, and what happens when key access is revoked? Google Cloud and Microsoft describe key-management and access-control approaches in their respective documentation, but details depend on the service and configuration.
- Application visibility: Does the application see encrypted file contents, or does the storage layer transparently decrypt data before presenting it?
- Data state: Does the claim cover stored data, data moving between client and service, or both?
- Verification: Is the status read from the system that enforces encryption, or inferred from file metadata that cannot see the storage layer?
A precise label might say “file contents encrypted by this format” or “storage service reports encryption at rest enabled,” provided the relevant format or service actually supports and verifies that claim. Avoid a bare “encrypted” label when readers could reasonably interpret it as covering both layers or both stored and moving data.
