To find out whether your power supply can handle a graphics card, check the exact GPU’s system-power recommendation and power connectors against your PSU’s rated capacity and actual GPU cables. Don’t decide by wattage alone: a card’s add-in-board version may differ from the reference model, and the manufacturer’s recommended system power is not the same as the GPU’s own board power.
How to check GPU and PSU compatibility
- Identify the exact graphics card. Record the GPU model and the card maker or board-partner model, not just the GPU family. Partner cards can have different power specifications from the reference design.
- Find the card’s power requirements. Check both the GPU maker’s specifications and the card partner’s page for the exact model. Note recommended or required system PSU wattage, board power, and auxiliary connector type and count.
- Check the exact PSU. Read its label and manufacturer documentation for rated capacity and the GPU power cables it provides. Confirm the cables are PCIe GPU cables of the required type; a CPU/EPS connector is not interchangeable.
- Compare the complete requirements. Make sure the PSU meets the card’s system-power recommendation and can supply the required connectors through its own cables. Consider the rest of your PC, since system configuration can affect the recommendation.
- Resolve any uncertainty with the manufacturers. If the PSU’s cable set, card requirements, or compatibility is unclear, consult the documentation or support for those exact models rather than relying on a generic wattage rule.
What the wattage figures mean
A GPU’s board power or total graphics power describes the card’s power use; a recommended system PSU wattage is guidance for the whole PC. The figures are not interchangeable. For example, NVIDIA lists the reference GeForce RTX 4080 at 320 W total graphics power and recommends a 750 W system power supply. The same product family page says system configuration can affect power needs and add-in-card specifications may vary. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 family specifications.

| Card or family | Card power | Recommended system PSU | Auxiliary power guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 family, reference specification | 320 W total graphics power | 750 W | Three PCIe 8-pin cables via the included adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for 450 W or greater |
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 family, reference specification | 285 W total graphics power | 650–700 W, depending on model | Two PCIe 8-pin cables via an adapter, or one PCIe Gen 5 cable rated for 300 W or greater; some partner models use one PCIe 8-pin cable |
| AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT | 304 W typical board power | 750 W minimum recommendation | Two 8-pin additional power connectors |
| AMD Radeon RX 9070 | 220 W typical board power | 650 W minimum recommendation | Two 8-pin additional power connectors |

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the connectors matter as much as wattage
A PSU can have a high headline wattage and still lack the GPU’s required cable type or number of connectors. Verify what the PSU itself provides, not only what an adapter included with the card accepts. Do not treat an adapter as proof that the PSU can meet the card’s power requirements, and never substitute a CPU/EPS cable for a PCIe GPU cable.
Connector power ratings are not a universal shortcut for checking compatibility. NVIDIA’s workstation guidance says a PCIe slot is typically rated for 75 W and an 8-pin PCIe connector for 150 W. It also describes a specific 250 W card case in which an 8-pin connector may carry up to 175 W when the PSU supplies at least 18 A of dedicated current to that connector. The guidance warns that some cards require the auxiliary input to supply the card’s full total graphics power. Those figures describe particular technical conditions, not a rule to apply to every card. NVIDIA PCI Express solutions guidance.

What to do if your PSU does not meet the requirements
If the PSU falls short of the exact card’s system-power recommendation or lacks its required native GPU cables, don’t assume it will work based on wattage, an adapter, or a rule of thumb. Check the PSU maker’s documentation and the card maker’s requirements for the exact models. If the unit cannot meet them, choose a replacement matched to the card and the rest of the PC; there is no universal wattage recommendation that safely fits every build.
