Check a Waterfall Chart’s Running Totals from CSV with JavaScript

A reliable waterfall check starts with correct CSV parsing, then independently recalculates each balance and compares chart checkpoints and totals.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To verify a waterfall chart from a CSV change log, parse the CSV correctly, then recompute the running balance from the opening value and each ordered change. Compare the calculated checkpoints and final balance with the chart’s values. Treat subtotal rows as summaries—not additional changes—unless the source data explicitly defines them otherwise.

What you are checking

A waterfall chart shows sequential positive or negative changes as cumulative columns. The height or position of each change depends on the balance reached before it, so checking only the final total can miss an error in an intermediate step. Highcharts describes the chart as displaying sequentially introduced positive or negative values in cumulative columns (Highcharts waterfall API).

There are two separate checks: first, confirm that the CSV was parsed into the intended rows and columns; second, recompute the arithmetic independently of chart rendering. Correct arithmetic applied to the wrong column or misread CSV rows still produces a wrong result.

Identify the data rules before calculating

Before writing the check, establish the chart library and version, the CSV-to-series column mapping, the opening balance, units, sign convention, and which rows represent changes versus summaries. Do not assume that another charting library uses Highcharts’ summary-point behavior.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Order: preserve the source row order; changes are cumulative in sequence.
  • Signs: confirm whether decreases are stored as negative numbers or encoded another way.
  • Opening value: use the explicitly stated starting balance, including zero only when zero is the intended start.
  • Summary rows: determine whether a row is a change, checkpoint, subtotal, or final total.
  • Precision: document currency conversion and rounding rules before comparing values.

Highcharts accepts waterfall values as numbers, two-value arrays, or named point objects, so inspect the actual series data rather than inferring its structure from the CSV alone (Highcharts waterfall data API).

Parse the CSV without losing its structure

Use a CSV parser that supports the file’s delimiter, quoting, and newline conventions. Do not split raw text on commas: a quoted label may itself contain a comma or newline. Highcharts’ Data module can load CSV text or a URL and map columns to series options, but its documentation warns that its built-in parser does not support every CSV variant. For unsupported cases, Highcharts points to external parsing such as Papa Parse (Highcharts Data module; Highcharts Stock data.csv API).

After parsing, validate the fields the calculation will use. Keep empty values distinct from zero, reject non-finite numeric values, check that each change row has a usable label and value, and make sure the selected columns match the chart’s mapping. If the chart uses a dataset-based structure, Apache ECharts documents dataset column and dimension mapping in its Dataset guide.

Recompute changes and checkpoints in JavaScript

The following example assumes a parser has already produced ordered objects with type, label, and value fields. Change rows use signed numeric values; checkpoint rows contain a recorded balance. A subtotal is checked against the changes since the previous subtotal and does not get added to the running balance.

For a change row, value is the signed change. Its optional checkpoint is the logged balance after applying that change. For a checkpoint row, value is the recorded balance. For a subtotal row, value is the subtotal amount over the defined interval. A total row’s value is the chart or CSV’s stated final balance.

The example uses exact comparison by default (tolerance = 0). If values are rounded, choose and document a tolerance that matches the data’s precision and units; do not silently round intermediate balances to make a mismatch disappear. The reported difference is actual - expected, so a positive difference means the recorded value is higher.

Interpret subtotal and total markers correctly

In Highcharts, an isIntermediateSum point summarizes additions and subtractions since the previous intermediate sum or the start, and its y value is ignored. An isSum point displays the total across the series, and its y value is also ignored (Highcharts waterfall API). In that configuration, verify the displayed summaries against the changes they summarize; do not add a summary point to the running balance a second time.

Those flags and semantics are Highcharts-specific. For a different library, consult its version-specific documentation to learn how it represents opening points, subtotals, totals, and missing values before interpreting chart data.

Read the results and locate discrepancies

For each checkpoint or summary, inspect the row label, expected value, recorded value, difference, and whether it falls within the chosen tolerance. The first mismatch in row order is often the most useful place to investigate: a later total may simply carry forward an earlier incorrect change or parse error.

  • If the first mismatch follows a row with a blank or malformed value, check CSV parsing and column mapping.
  • If the mismatch follows a valid change, verify its sign, order, units, and whether it was included once.
  • If changes match but a subtotal does not, verify the interval that the chart’s summary marker covers.
  • If the computed final balance differs from the chart total, check whether the chart uses a different opening balance, excludes rows, or applies a conversion or rounding rule.

As a simple arithmetic illustration, an opening balance of 100 followed by changes of +25, -10, and +5 produces balances of 125, 115, and 120. A checkpoint of 115 after the second change agrees with the calculation; a final total of 125 does not agree with those inputs. This example is illustrative, not a sourced dataset.
