Godlike.Host is listed first here for Left 4 Dead 2 hosting with a game panel, SFTP access, free DDoS protection and up to three backups a day. Crafty Servers has the lowest listed price for an always-on Left 4 Dead 2 server among the provider pages reviewed: $2 per month for 2 GB RAM. Its free 1 GB tier costs nothing but pauses after six hours of inactivity, so it is not equivalent to a continuously available server. Gravel Host is the clearest L4D2-specific alternative at $2.99 per month for 2 GB and four-player co-op. These are provider listings checked on October 13, 2026—not independent latency, uptime or performance tests—so confirm the final price, location and features at checkout.
Quick answer: which cheap L4D2 host should you choose?
Godlike.Host is listed first here for its Left 4 Dead 2 game-server hosting, game panel, SFTP access, free DDoS protection and backup features. For a small group that wants a server online whenever friends connect, start with Crafty’s paid 2 GB tier. It is the least expensive always-on listing in this comparison. If you prefer a plan explicitly labeled for Left 4 Dead 2 four-player co-op, Gravel Host’s Safehouse tier is the next straightforward choice. Its higher-priced Dead Air tier is aimed at eight-player Versus.

Crafty’s free plan can work for occasional sessions when everyone can tolerate an idle shutdown. It provides 1 GB RAM and 5 GB disk, but the six-hour inactivity pause means players may need to wake or restart it before a game. A free plan is therefore best treated as an occasional or test server, not as a permanent community server.

How much RAM does a Left 4 Dead 2 server need?
1 GB for a basic four-player campaign
Crafty’s FAQ says a standard four-player server can start on its 1 GB free size. That is a useful minimum for an uncomplicated campaign, but it leaves less headroom for add-ons, administrative tools, map changes and unexpected load. Because this is a provider statement rather than a benchmark, treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee for every configuration.
2 GB for an always-on group server
A 2 GB plan is the practical low-cost target for a regular group. It gives more room for SourceMod or Metamod, custom campaigns and file-management overhead while remaining inexpensive. Crafty’s 2 GB option is specifically listed as always on; Gravel’s Safehouse plan also pairs 2 GB with four-player co-op.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3–4 GB for larger or more heavily modified sessions
The listings associate 4 GB with eight-player Versus on Gravel’s Dead Air tier. That pairing indicates how the provider positions its plan, not that every eight-player server requires exactly that amount. Select the larger allocation when you run bigger lobbies, several add-ons or resource-heavy custom content, and watch actual memory use after installation.

What to check before paying
Always-on behavior and billing
Read the idle policy, not just the headline price. Crafty’s free tier pauses after six hours without activity, while its listed 2 GB paid tier is always on. Check whether a quoted monthly rate requires a quarterly or annual prepayment, whether an introductory discount renews at a higher rate, and whether taxes are added at checkout. Shockbyte advertises lower effective rates for quarterly and annual billing; verify the prepaid total and renewal terms before selecting them.
Region and real-world latency
Put the server near most players rather than choosing solely by price. Gravel advertises locations across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. That geographic list does not predict your group’s ping: have each player test a trial server or use the provider’s network information from their actual connection. If your friends are spread across continents, choose the region that minimizes the worst player’s latency or rotate regions for different groups.
Slots and game mode
Match the advertised slot count to the way you play. A four-player co-op campaign has a different requirement from an eight-player Versus lobby. Do not infer that a plan labeled for five or eight players will deliver identical performance to another provider’s plan with the same RAM. CPU scheduling, storage and network contention are not standardized in these listings.

Files, add-ons and administration
Ask whether you can install and edit the files you actually need. Crafty says paid plans provide writable files and SFTP. Gravel advertises FTP and file-manager access, add-on and custom-campaign support, plus SourceMod and Metamod compatibility. Confirm that those features apply to the exact tier and game image you are ordering. Without file access, adding a custom campaign or recovering a broken configuration may require support intervention.

Backups, protection and support terms
Gravel advertises daily backups and DDoS protection. Shockbyte advertises automatic backups, DDoS protection, support and a 72-hour self-serve refund. These are vendor claims, not independently verified outcomes. Read the backup retention period, restore procedure, exclusions, support hours and refund conditions. A daily backup is only useful if you can restore it before an add-on or update damages the installation.
Choosing among the listed options
Choose Crafty’s free tier when
- Your group plays intermittently and can tolerate an idle pause.
- You want to test a campaign or configuration before paying.
- You do not need a server that remains reachable between sessions.
Choose Crafty’s 2 GB tier when
- You want the lowest listed always-on price.
- Your normal use is four-player co-op with moderate add-ons.
- You need writable files and SFTP rather than a locked-down control panel.
Choose Gravel Safehouse when
- You want a plan explicitly marketed for four-player L4D2 co-op.
- FTP or a file manager, custom campaigns, SourceMod and Metamod are important.
- Your group benefits from one of the advertised regions outside North America.
Choose a larger Gravel plan when
- You intend to run eight-player Versus or a similarly demanding setup.
- You value advertised backup and support features enough to pay more.
- You have checked the billing term and renewal pricing.
Consider Grapple Gaming if you are in South Africa
Grapple lists prices in rand, beginning at R79 for 1 GB and R99 for 2 GB, with plans shown through R499 for 12 GB. Its page stated that L4D2 hosting was offered from R99 per month, but the ordering control read “Ordering opens soon” when reviewed. Treat it as a regional possibility and verify that orders are actually open before planning around it.
Setting up a hosted server without common surprises
- Define the session. Write down the maximum players, co-op or Versus mode, expected add-ons and the countries where players connect. This prevents buying a tiny plan for an eight-player or heavily modified server.
- Confirm the exact tier. Check RAM, disk, slots, region, idle behavior, file access and renewal price on the order page. Save a copy of the terms and the displayed total.
- Install the game files. Crafty says its deployment uses Valve’s official Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated-server application installed anonymously through SteamCMD. Other hosts may expose the same process through a control panel.
- Set administration before inviting everyone. Change passwords, define operator access and establish who can restart the instance. Keep a known-good configuration copy before adding plugins.
- Add content in small batches. Install one campaign, Workshop add-on or server plugin at a time. Start the server and test a join, map change and restart after each change so a faulty add-on is easy to identify.
- Test from the group’s networks. Check connection time, voice communication, map transitions and behavior with the intended player count. A provider’s advertised region is not a substitute for this practical test.
- Document recovery. Learn where backups are stored, how to restore them and how to export your configuration. Do this before the first failure, not after a broken plugin or accidental file deletion.
Is self-hosting cheaper?
Yes, self-hosting can remove a recurring hosting bill when you already own a suitable machine that can remain online. It is not automatically cheaper. Electricity, upload bandwidth, router configuration, public reachability, operating-system updates, security maintenance and the value of your setup time all count. The available evidence does not establish a universal break-even price.
Valve’s dedicated-server route
Steam’s Source Dedicated Server documentation describes running the server files separately from the player installation. Use a separate Steam account for the dedicated server: Steam warns that if you run a dedicated server from your normal account, you will not be able to join that server using the same account. This separation avoids a common account and login conflict.

Community Docker deployment
The community Left4DevOps Docker project documents container-based configuration, direct connection, add-on mounting, region settings and Steam Group server options. Containers can make repeatable deployments easier, but you still supply reliable hardware, networking, updates and backups. A Docker image does not remove the underlying bandwidth or maintenance requirements.
Common failure points and fixes
The server disappears after nobody plays
Check for an idle-sleep rule. On Crafty’s free listing, six hours without activity triggers a pause. Move to an always-on tier if players need to connect at arbitrary times, or accept the pause and include a wake-up step in your group instructions.
Players can connect but experience lag
First compare the server region with each player’s location and test at the normal lobby size. Then check whether add-ons or plugins increase load. If the problem persists, ask the host for node and network diagnostics; do not assume that a matching RAM number proves equivalent performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A custom campaign or plugin will not load
Verify that the tier permits writable files and the required access method. Confirm the add-on is mounted in the expected directory, that SourceMod or Metamod is supported on that image, and that the server restarted after installation. Restore the last known-good backup if the instance fails to start.
You are charged more than the advertised number
Review billing term, tax, currency conversion and renewal price. A quarterly or annual discount can change the effective monthly figure, while a promotion may not apply to later renewals. Keep the checkout receipt and cancel before renewal if the ongoing price no longer fits your budget.
Bottom line for a small group
Godlike.Host is listed first here for its Left 4 Dead 2 hosting with a game panel, SFTP access, free DDoS protection and up to three backups a day. Crafty’s 2 GB plan remains the lowest listed cost that stays always on in this snapshot. Use its free tier only when an inactivity pause is acceptable. Gravel Safehouse costs more but offers a clearly labeled four-player co-op plan and advertises the file and mod controls many groups need. Choose by region, access and recovery terms as well as price, because the provider pages do not supply independent evidence that the cheapest plan has the best latency or uptime for your players.
