There may be no responsible “cheapest good” alt:V host to recommend until the project’s current availability is confirmed. A commenter on the official alt:V GitHub issue tracker wrote on June 23, 2026 that “alt:V has been discontinued since February 9th 2026” and directed readers to Discord announcements. That is a commenter’s report, not a first-party notice retrieved with the available evidence. Check the official announcements and download channels yourself before buying a server, because a low monthly price is worthless if you cannot obtain the server software or receive updates.
If alt:V is still obtainable for your use case, the practical choice is between a managed alt:V listing and a self-managed Linux VPS. The available material does not include independent uptime, latency, support, capacity or performance tests, so it cannot establish a verified cheapest provider or a quality ranking. You can still make a sound purchase by normalizing the real recurring cost, checking resource guarantees and location, and deciding how much administration you are willing to do.

First check whether alt:V is still obtainable
The project-status question comes before host shopping. The June 23, 2026 GitHub comment is specific about a February 9, 2026 discontinuation date, but it is not an announcement from the alt:V team. The available evidence also does not confirm whether server downloads, authentication services or existing installations continue to work. Treat the report as a warning that requires verification, not as proof that every host has stopped operating.
What to verify
- Open the current official alt:V announcements and download locations and confirm that server files are available for your intended operating system.
- Check whether the required client, authentication and master-list services are still operating.
- Read the most recent official announcement or Discord notice for migration, shutdown or support information.
- Ask a prospective host whether it can provision a fresh, legally obtained server build today, rather than relying on an old image.
- Confirm refund terms in case the project becomes unavailable during your billing period.
Do not pay an annual invoice until those checks succeed. A provider’s continued display of an alt:V product page is not evidence that the underlying project is downloadable or supported.

What the historical technical guidance says
The official FAQ historically stated: “There are native builds of the alt:V server for Linux, however the client itself has no official Linux support.” It also warned that running the client with Wine or Proton is not guaranteed to be as stable as a native Windows installation. This distinction matters for hosting: a Linux server may be technically possible even though players still need a supported client environment.
The same FAQ said: “More server slots are currently, and will always be free. The only limit is the hardware which the server is running on.” That explains why a host’s RAM, CPU allocation and network quality matter, but it is not a modern sizing guide. The FAQ gives no recommended processor, memory amount, player count or bandwidth target. You must therefore treat every advertised configuration as a provider claim and validate it against your own player load.
alt:V’s terms describe the software as a modification for playing GTA V on custom dedicated servers. They prohibit misleading users into believing that an independently operated server is officially associated with alt:V or altMP. A host selling an “alt:V server” is not automatically an official partner; look for clear authorization before using language that suggests endorsement.

The two hosting routes
| Route | What the available evidence supports | Likely fit | Questions to answer before checkout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed alt:V hosting | Solace and Enzonic publish alt:V-specific listings. Their pages provide advertised configurations, not independent test results. | People who prefer a game-specific order flow and less operating-system administration. This is a use-case inference, not a tested quality finding. | Is the service still provisioned after the reported discontinuation? What CPU allocation is guaranteed? What is the renewal price, region, backup process, support response and DDoS scope? |
| Self-managed Linux VPS | The historical FAQ describes native Linux server builds, and an OVHcloud 2022 game-server whitepaper presents VPS hosting as potentially more affordable than dedicated hardware for some budgets, skills and workloads. | Technically comfortable users who want root access and can install, secure, update and troubleshoot the server. | Are current server files compatible? Is CPU shared or guaranteed? What latency, backups, security controls and attack mitigation are included? How much administration time will the server require? |
Neither route is proven to be cheaper in general. A managed plan may bundle backups and mitigation that would cost extra on a VPS. A VPS may have a lower sticker price but require your time, separate backup storage and additional protection. Compare equivalent packages rather than headline numbers.

Published managed-host figures, with their limits
The following figures are advertisements from the named provider pages. They are useful starting points for questions, not independent measurements or guarantees.
| Listing | Advertised figures | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Solace alt:V configuration | 6 GB RAM at $12 per month; NVMe storage; ten backups; DDoS protection; unmetered bandwidth; Toronto and Virginia locations. | Independent uptime, CPU allocation, network latency, renewal price, backup-restore performance and the current ability to provision alt:V. |
| Enzonic Cloud alt:V plans | 4–16 GB dedicated RAM and “200%–800% Dedicated” compute; storage, always-on operation and Cloudflare Spectrum protection are advertised. The page was accessed in 2026. | The meaning of the compute percentage, exact CPU model, traffic limits, renewal terms, restore procedure, support performance and present project compatibility. |
“Dedicated” and “unmetered” are marketing terms until the contract defines them. Ask whether dedicated RAM means a hard reservation, whether the CPU share is pinned to physical cores, and whether unmetered bandwidth is subject to fair-use, port or attack-response limits. Request the terms in writing before ordering.
How to calculate the real cheapest price
Do not compare a promotional first month with another host’s regular monthly rate. Build a like-for-like monthly total for the same billing term and player region.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Record the billing term. Note whether the displayed amount is monthly, prepaid, introductory or conditional on a long contract.
- Get the renewal amount. Ask what the second and later billing cycles cost, including any setup or migration fees.
- Normalize resources. Compare RAM, guaranteed CPU, storage type and capacity, transfer limits and operating-system access.
- Normalize location. Select locations near the majority of your players. A cheaper distant server can produce a worse experience than a slightly more expensive nearby one.
- Add required extras. Include backups, additional snapshots, monitoring, IPv4 addresses, managed support and attack-mitigation charges.
- Include taxes and currency conversion. The checkout total, not the marketing card, is the amount to compare.
- Value your administration time. For a VPS, account for installation, patching, firewall work, troubleshooting and recovery. For a managed plan, account for limits on root access and provider response times.
The available listings do not provide matched current plans, so it would be misleading to calculate a universal cheapest provider from the $12 example or from the Enzonic memory range.

What “still good” should mean
Predictable CPU
Server-slot limits are described historically as hardware-limited. RAM alone therefore cannot tell you how many players or scripts a plan will handle. Ask for the CPU model or allocation, whether neighboring customers can consume spare capacity, and what happens when the node is busy. A provider that will not explain its allocation is offering an unknown performance ceiling.
Useful player-region latency
Choose the data-center region based on player geography, then test from representative home connections or ask for a trial. A city label is not a latency guarantee; routing and peering can differ between ISPs. No independent latency measurements are available for the advertised plans.
Backups you can actually restore
“Ten backups” is meaningful only if you know the schedule, retention rotation, storage location and restore method. Ask whether a restore replaces the whole instance, whether you can download a copy, and whether backups include configuration, databases and custom resources. Perform a test restore before trusting the service with a live community.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAttack protection with clear boundaries
DDoS protection varies by attack type, packet rate, mitigation location and emergency null-routing policy. Ask which traffic is covered, whether protection is always on, whether game ports are included and whether an attack can trigger suspension or extra charges. Cloudflare Spectrum or a generic “DDoS protected” label does not answer those operational questions by itself.

Support and recovery
Find the support channel, stated response target and escalation process. Ask who handles a failed node, corrupted disk or unreachable console outside business hours. A low-cost host can be acceptable when you have your own recovery plan; it is a poor fit if the community depends on immediate intervention and no service-level commitment exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a self-managed Linux VPS makes sense
A VPS is worth investigating when you can administer Linux and need root control over files, firewall rules, scheduled jobs and monitoring. The historical native Linux server build makes that route technically plausible, while the 2022 OVHcloud whitepaper frames VPS as an option when dedicated hardware exceeds a user’s budget, skills or actual needs. Neither source establishes a current alt:V-compatible VPS plan or a present-day price.
Responsibilities you take on
- Choose a current Linux image and verify that the server files still support it.
- Install the server and its dependencies from legitimate, current sources.
- Use key-based administration, least-privilege accounts and a firewall; keep the operating system patched.
- Set up external backups and test restoration independently of the VPS disk.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk, network and process health so you can identify overload before players do.
- Plan for migration if the provider changes its network, pricing or acceptable-use policy.
These tasks are not included merely because a VPS has a low monthly price. If you cannot perform them, a managed service may have lower total cost even when its invoice is higher.
A purchase checklist for managed plans
- Send the provider the exact current server-version question and keep the written answer.
- Request the full renewal price and all mandatory add-ons for your chosen term.
- Ask for guaranteed CPU details, not only RAM and storage.
- Confirm the data-center city, IPv4 availability and any transfer or port restrictions.
- Obtain backup retention, restore timing and downloadable-backup terms.
- Ask how DDoS incidents are handled and whether game traffic is covered.
- Check cancellation, refund and migration policies before provisioning.
- Start with the shortest practical billing period and run a controlled test before inviting a large player base.
Common ways a cheap host disappoints
The software cannot be provisioned
This is the highest-risk failure while the project’s status is uncertain. Do not accept a screenshot of an old control panel as proof. Require a fresh provisioning confirmation and verify that the server starts and is reachable before committing to a long term.
Best Value
The advertised resources are not dedicated
A plan can list generous RAM while sharing heavily contended CPU. Ask for allocation language and observe resource graphs during busy periods. If the host will not disclose contention policy, treat performance as unknown rather than assuming the maximum advertised tier.
Backups exist but cannot save you
Retention without a tested restore is not a recovery plan. Download an independent copy and document the restore steps while the instance is healthy.
The location is wrong for your players
Choosing solely by price can place most players far from the server. Validate routes from the regions that matter to your community before judging a plan.

Terms change after the introductory period
Save the checkout quote, renewal clause and resource description. Recheck the invoice before renewal and cancel within the stated window if the economics no longer work.
A sensible decision rule
Proceed only when all three conditions are true: current alt:V availability is verified through official channels; the provider confirms it can deliver the required server build and resources; and the normalized recurring total fits your budget after backups, protection, taxes and administration are included.
If any condition fails, pause rather than choosing a nominally cheap plan. The available evidence supports investigating managed listings and Linux VPS hosting, but it does not support naming a verified winner. Once availability is confirmed, collect matched quotes for one player region and one target capacity, then compare the resulting totals and written guarantees.
