The extra cost can buy a brighter, higher-contrast picture, better motion and image processing, more capable gaming connections, or improved sound and design. But price and feature badges alone do not prove that one TV will perform better for your needs. Compare the exact models, sizes, and regional versions—and focus on the features your room and devices can use.
Why 4K, HDR, and smart apps do not settle the comparison
Two TVs can both advertise 4K resolution, HDR support, and streaming apps while delivering noticeably different experiences. Resolution describes the number of pixels; it does not tell you how bright the screen gets, how well it controls dark areas, or how effectively it handles motion and lower-quality video.

HDR support is likewise not the same as impactful HDR performance. A TV needs enough brightness and contrast control to make highlights stand out while preserving detail in darker scenes. RTINGS’ review of the entry-level 2025 Hisense QD6QF notes that it supports HDR formats but lacks local dimming and is not bright enough for impactful HDR. That is a model-specific example of why a format checkbox is not a picture-quality rating. Read the RTINGS Hisense QD6QF review.
What to compare in the picture
Brightness, contrast, and reflections
For a bright living room, compare measured SDR brightness and reflection handling. For HDR films and shows, look for HDR brightness as well as contrast performance. On an LCD TV, local dimming can control different backlight zones to improve contrast, though its effectiveness varies by model. OLED and LCD/Mini LED use different display approaches, so compare their actual strengths for your room instead of assuming one tier label guarantees a result.

- Supports HDMI ARC - Sends audio directly from the HDMI jack to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver, removing the need for an extra cable.
Viewing angle and screen uniformity matter too. If people watch from seats spread across the room, check whether the image loses contrast or color off-center. If you watch a lot of dark scenes, look for evidence about black levels and uniformity rather than relying on the words “4K” or “HDR.” RTINGS’ methodology describes picture and performance categories it evaluates across TVs. See RTINGS’ TV testing methodology.
Color, motion, and video processing
Color gamut and color volume help explain how much color a TV can display across different brightness levels. Gradient handling can affect whether smooth skies or shadows show visible bands. Motion tests can reveal judder with film content or artifacts introduced by motion processing. These differences are especially noticeable on large screens, with fast-moving sports, or when the source video is low quality.

Upscaling and low-quality-content smoothing are worth checking if you watch older broadcasts or compressed streams. A large screen can make flaws in the source more apparent. Samsung’s buying guide also identifies processing and screen-wide detail as considerations for large displays, but its descriptions of its own tiers are manufacturer guidance, not independent measurements or universal definitions. See Samsung Canada’s TV buying guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGaming differences depend on your console or PC
A TV’s refresh-rate label is only part of the picture. For gaming, check the native refresh rate, the resolution and refresh combinations supported, which HDMI ports provide the required bandwidth, variable refresh rate (VRR) support, input lag, and response behavior. A generic “gaming” claim does not establish that the set can use the mode your console or PC outputs.

Match the TV’s port and supported mode to your device. If you want 4K at a high refresh rate, verify that the specific input supports that combination; do not infer it from “120Hz” or “144Hz” on the product page alone. Smart TV features and sound are practical differences, not automatic upgrades
Check whether the platform has the apps your household uses and whether they behave as expected. Interface responsiveness, app launch time, advertising, remote layout, voice controls, and HDR operation in apps can differ. RTINGS says its smart-feature testing includes app support, YouTube launch time, HDR operation, advertisements, and remote and voice features. Review RTINGS’ testing categories.

Audio quality is another possible reason to pay more, but a higher price does not by itself establish that a TV’s speakers will suit your room. Compare the audio performance of the specific models and consider whether you are willing to use separate audio equipment.

How to compare models without being misled by tiers
- Match the comparison. Identify the exact model year, screen size, regional SKU, and current price for each TV. Specifications can change by size or region, so do not assume one review applies to every version.
- Prioritize your use. For bright rooms, focus on SDR brightness and reflections; for HDR films, focus on brightness and contrast; for gaming, verify the port and output modes; for older or compressed video, compare processing and upscaling.
- Check evidence beyond labels. Look for measured results and model-specific reviews for the attributes that matter. A family name or display technology label does not substitute for the performance of the particular set.
- Decide whether the difference serves you. Pay more only for improvements you are likely to notice and use in your room, with your sources and devices.
As an example of why model-level checking matters, RTINGS describes the Hisense QD6QF as an entry-level 2025-lineup 4K LCD with Fire TV, 60Hz refresh, no local dimming, and no HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. Its review findings for the 65-inch model are said to apply to several listed sizes, but the 100-inch version has different specifications; do not extend those findings to that variant. Check the QD6QF review and its size-specific notes.

For a premium-tier reference, the Sony BRAVIA 7 review page covers categories such as brightness, local dimming, color, processing, motion, inputs, gaming, and smart features. It does not provide a controlled, same-size and same-year comparison against the QD6QF, so those pages do not establish a performance ratio or value-for-money result between the two models. See the Sony BRAVIA 7 review.
Is an expensive smart TV worth it?
It can be worth the extra cost if the specific TV’s advantages address a real need: more brightness for a sunlit room, stronger contrast for HDR viewing, more suitable gaming inputs for your console or PC, better processing for the content you watch, wider viewing angles for group viewing, or audio that meets your expectations. If you mainly stream ordinary shows in a modestly lit room and do not need advanced gaming modes, some premium features may have little practical value to you.
Compare actual street prices for the same size and region rather than treating MSRP or a tier name as evidence of a measured gap. The available model reviews and guides do not establish a universal premium price, a general price-to-longevity rule, or a controlled market-wide value comparison.
