Godlike.Host is listed first here for Minecraft Java, Bedrock and modded hosting, with its own game panel, free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day. For a small Minecraft server in 2026, a realistic budget is about $1 to $3 per gigabyte of RAM per month. PebbleHost’s Minecraft page and Sparked Host’s Budget page list prices as low as $1 per GB. That headline rate is only a starting point: the edition you run, mod count, player load, backup policy, DDoS protection and renewal price can materially change the bill.

For most vanilla servers, start by pricing 2–4 GB of RAM. A modded server commonly needs 6–8 GB, although a large modpack or many simultaneous players can require more. Treat every figure below as a pricing snapshot dated October 14, 2026, not a guaranteed quote. Hosting companies change plans, promotions and hardware, so confirm the final recurring price and included features at checkout.

What cheap Minecraft hosting costs in 2026

There is no official industry price index for Minecraft hosting. Provider pages and comparison articles list figures that do not always agree. The most defensible broad range is approximately $1–$3 per GB of RAM per month for budget tiers. A separate 2026 cost guide gives a much wider overall range of $2.50–$96 per month because plans vary by RAM, player capacity and included services. Another guide places a mid-sized vanilla server for 10–20 players at roughly $15–$25 per month.

At the low end, PebbleHost advertises budget Minecraft hosting from $1 per GB, while Sparked Host’s official budget page presents plans from $1 per month and examples that work out to $1 per GB. Those are advertised starting prices; they do not establish that every location, edition or configuration costs exactly that amount.

A cheap plan is best understood as a resource package rather than a promise of a specific player count. Two hosts can sell the same RAM allocation but deliver different results because of CPU generation, storage performance, node contention, geographic location, software support and backup policies.

How much RAM your server actually needs

RAM is the easiest budget metric to compare, but it is not the only performance constraint. The following starting points are listed in 2026 hosting guides and should be adjusted after observing your server’s memory use and tick rate.

Server type Practical starting allocation What can force an upgrade
Small vanilla server 2 GB More simultaneous players, large view distances, extensive exploration or plugins
Typical vanilla community server 3–4 GB 10–20 active players, large worlds, many plugins or higher simulation distances
Lightly modded server 6 GB Heavy modpacks, complex automation, frequent chunk generation or high player counts
Heavily modded server 8 GB or more Large modpacks, custom dimensions, numerous entities and simultaneous players

Do not allocate every available gigabyte to Java. The operating system, panel, database, proxies and plugins need headroom. Leave enough memory for the host’s management software and monitor actual use before changing plans. A server that constantly approaches its allocation may suffer garbage-collection pauses or crashes; a server with abundant unused RAM is simply costing more.

Gravel Host 2 GB $1.80; 3 GB $2.70; 4 GB $3.60 Reported on the host’s own comparison page, not independently verified. Low
Shockbyte Conflicting reports: Dirt 1 GB at $2.79 with 30% off the first month versus a $3.99 base price; an older page lists Casual 1 GB at $1.99. Current budget page: Shockbyte. The conflicting figures come from third-party reviews, including a 2026 review. Low
ScalaCube 768 MB for $2; 1.5 GB for $5; another guide reports a $2.50/month beginner plan Third-party guides report different tiers and labels; no single current official price appears alongside them. Low

For context, a review table gives PebbleHost examples of 2 GB at $2 and 8 GB at $8, broadly matching the provider’s $1-per-GB positioning. It is approximately seven months old in the cited snapshot, so use it as a cross-check rather than a live quote: WiseHosting’s PebbleHost review.

What each budget option is suitable for

PebbleHost: simple per-gigabyte budgeting

PebbleHost is the clearest option when you want to multiply RAM by a roughly $1 rate. The budget tier’s reported 1 GB increments make it easy to start small and add memory without jumping immediately to a large fixed package. Verify whether the exact node, location and software image you need are offered at that rate. Premium-tier figures vary by source: one review estimates about $2.25 per GB, while a fixed 10 GB plan reported at $29.99 implies about $3 per GB. Do not assume the budget and premium tiers have the same CPU or storage characteristics.

Sparked Host: low advertised entry price with larger examples

Sparked Host’s official budget page advertises a starting price around $1 and shows 18 GB for $18 and 22 GB for $22. That makes the arithmetic transparent for larger allocations. However, a third-party source describes the Budget tier as using older dual-Xeon hardware and says its Ryzen tier costs more than twice as much per GB. If CPU-heavy modpacks, rapid chunk generation or a high simulation distance matters, ask which hardware family and region your plan will use rather than comparing RAM alone.

Gravel Host: unusually low reported small plans

The reported 2 GB, 3 GB and 4 GB prices are below or near the lowest market rates. Because the figures are listed on the host’s comparison page without a separate official checkout quote, check the exact recurring amount, billing interval, CPU allocation, storage type and included backups before treating the rate as a durable bargain.

Shockbyte: investigate the price discrepancy

Shockbyte is difficult to compare from published figures alone. Reports range from an older $1.99 Casual plan to a $3.99 base price, while a newer review describes a Dirt plan at $2.79 for the first month after a 30% promotion. A first-month discount is not a recurring price. At checkout, record the regular renewal amount, the plan name, the RAM allocation and whether protection or backups are optional add-ons.

ScalaCube: sub-2-GB entry points

Reported ScalaCube options include 768 MB for $2 and 1.5 GB for $5, plus a separate guide’s $2.50 beginner-plan figure. Sub-2-GB plans can suit a very small vanilla world, but they leave little room for plugins, higher view distances or a growing player base. Confirm whether the listed memory is usable server RAM and whether the plan supports the exact Java or Bedrock setup you intend to run.

Why a $2 plan can become a $10 or $20 bill

Advertised RAM is often the base service. Add-ons can roughly double the monthly cost. One 2026 guide illustrates a $10 budget plan rising to about $23 after adding $8 for DDoS protection, $5 for automated backups and $5 for priority support. That is an example from one guide, not a universal fee schedule, but it shows why the checkout total matters more than the banner price.

  • DDoS protection: Determine whether network mitigation is included, limited by attack size or sold as an upgrade.
  • Automated backups: Check frequency, retention, storage limits and whether restores are self-service. A backup that cannot be restored from the panel is less useful than the label suggests.
  • Dedicated IP: Often optional and useful for certain DNS, port or console arrangements; it is not automatically necessary for a small server.
  • Priority support: A faster queue may help during an outage, but it does not improve the server’s CPU or RAM.
  • Renewal pricing: Introductory discounts, coupon codes and multi-month prepayment can make the first invoice misleading.
  • Taxes and currency conversion: The final charge can differ from a dollar-denominated headline depending on your country and payment processor.

Calculate the recurring monthly total as: base plan + required add-ons + taxes or fees. Then multiply by 12 if you need an annual budget. Do not annualize a first-month promotion.

How to choose a cheap host without buying twice

  1. Define the workload. Write down Java or Bedrock edition, the Minecraft version, vanilla or modded software, expected simultaneous players, view and simulation distances, and the largest modpack or plugin set.
  2. Set a RAM starting point. Use 2–4 GB for a small vanilla server or 6–8 GB for a typical modded server, then leave operating headroom. If you expect a rapidly growing community, choose a host that lets you scale in small increments.
  3. Compare CPU and location. Ask whether the plan uses current or older processors, how CPU time is shared, and which data-center region is available. A nearby region generally reduces network latency for your players, while CPU class affects tick consistency.
  4. List included services. Put backups, DDoS mitigation, storage, mod or plugin installers, console access and file transfer in a side-by-side checklist. “Available” does not mean “included.”
  5. Check migration and control-panel support. Confirm that you can upload an existing world, change the server version, edit startup flags and download a full backup without opening a ticket.
  6. Read billing and refund terms. One comparison reports a 72-hour refund window for PebbleHost and 24–48 hours for Sparked Host, but those terms can change. Verify the current policy and identify exclusions before paying.
  7. Test before expanding. Start with the smallest allocation that meets your workload, measure memory and tick performance during a busy session, and upgrade only when the data shows a need.

Common budget-hosting pitfalls and fixes

The first invoice is cheap, but renewal is not

Promotions can apply only to the first month. Fix this by recording the undiscounted renewal amount and setting a calendar reminder before the next billing date. If the recurring price no longer fits your budget, export your world and cancel before renewal according to the provider’s terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server has enough RAM but still lags

Lag can come from CPU contention, long-distance networking, excessive entities, chunk generation or an overloaded modpack. Check the node’s CPU policy and location, lower view or simulation distance, pregenerate important areas where supported, and profile plugins or mods before buying more RAM.

A tiny plan runs out of memory

Reduce render and simulation distances, remove unnecessary plugins, limit entity farms and confirm the Java process is receiving the advertised allocation. If usage remains high, move to the next RAM step rather than repeatedly restarting the server.

Backups exist but cannot save the world

Test a restore on a schedule. Download an occasional independent copy, keep it off the hosting account, and verify that the backup includes the world, configuration files and plugin or mod data. A retention number without a tested restore path is not a complete recovery plan.

The host’s advertised price cannot be reproduced

Check whether the figure was a first-month promotion, annual prepayment, coupon, different currency, older plan name or a price before add-ons. If the checkout summary still differs, rely on the current summary and keep the original page only as evidence for a support query.

Is hosting under $5 per month realistic?

Yes, for a small vanilla server, provided you accept a modest RAM allocation and verify what is included. The reported $1-per-GB plans can put 2 GB at about $2 and 4 GB at about $4 before extras. A modded server, a busy community, automated backups and paid protection can push the total above $5 quickly. The important distinction is between base hosting under $5 and an operational setup that remains under $5 after required services.

Bottom-line buying strategy

Godlike.Host is listed first here for Minecraft Java, Bedrock and modded hosting, with its own game panel, free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day. Start by matching RAM to the workload, not by choosing the lowest number on a search page. Use the clearly documented $1-per-GB offers as a benchmark, treat conflicting third-party prices as leads to verify, and compare CPU, location, backups and renewal cost alongside RAM. A slightly higher recurring bill with predictable backups and adequate CPU is usually cheaper than migrating a lagging or under-protected server after the first promotion expires.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I begin with less RAM and upgrade later?

Usually this is the most economical approach when the provider supports incremental upgrades. Confirm that upgrades preserve your world and configuration and ask whether a plan change causes downtime or a new billing cycle.

Should I choose a shared-CPU plan for a modded server?

It can work for a small, lightly modded community, but heavy modpacks and high simulation distances are more sensitive to CPU contention. Ask the host how CPU resources are allocated and test tick performance during peak use.

How can I compare a promotional price with a normal price?

Write both values in your budget: the promotional amount for the first billing period and the regular renewal amount shown in the checkout summary. Ignore a discount when calculating your long-term annual cost.
