The cheapest gaming VPS plans that are worth considering in 2026 generally fall between about $4 and $30 per month, with a few listings below that range. The right choice depends less on the headline price than on renewable pricing, RAM and CPU allocation, storage type, player location, DDoS protection and whether a game-control panel is included.
Current comparison listings put a Minecraft-focused option around $2.50 per month, a 4 GB KVM plan at roughly $3.99–$4.59, and more capable 8–16 GB plans at about $17–$28. Treat every figure as a listing to verify before paying: several pages do not clearly separate introductory and renewal rates, and some prices conflict.

What a cheap gaming VPS is—and what it is not
A virtual private server is a rented virtual machine running in a datacenter. You receive a portion of a physical host’s CPU, memory, storage and network capacity, then install the operating system and game server software yourself or through a provider panel. Unlike ordinary shared game hosting, a VPS usually gives you administrator access and the flexibility to run more than one service.
“Cheap” does not mean a fixed performance level. A low-cost plan may have enough memory for a small private world, while a similarly priced plan on a crowded host may suffer from CPU contention or slow storage. The useful comparison is the complete recurring package:

- Dedicated or guaranteed RAM and the number and generation of vCPUs.
- SSD or NVMe storage, plus enough capacity for the game, logs, mods and backups.
- DDoS protection, including whether it is included, limited or billed separately.
- Datacenter location and network quality for the players who will connect.
- A control panel, managed updates and support, if you do not want to administer Linux manually.
- Renewal price, setup fees, backup charges and any bandwidth or traffic limits.
A VPS is not automatically better than a managed game-server plan. It is usually more flexible, but you are responsible for patching the operating system, securing accounts, configuring the firewall and recovering from mistakes unless the provider sells those services.

How much should you budget?
Under $5 per month
This is the experimental and small-community tier. A Minecraft-oriented listing around $2.50 and a 4 GB KVM listing around $3.99–$4.59 can work for a modest player count, a lightly modded world or a test server. At this price, inspect CPU limits, storage performance, traffic policy, backups and support before looking at the number alone.
One 2026 pricing guide places the practical floor for a dependable VPS at roughly $4–$6 per month and warns that cheaper offers may rely on oversold hardware, disappear or become much more expensive at renewal. That is an editorial opinion, not a market-wide statistic; use it as a risk check rather than a guarantee.

$8–$30 per month
This is the more useful range for a persistent community server. Listings near $10 and $14.40 occupy the lower end, while 8 GB/2 vCPU and 16 GB/4 vCPU examples at $17 and $28 provide a clearer upgrade path. The extra memory can accommodate larger maps, plugins, mod loaders, monitoring and a second service, but only if the CPU allocation is adequate.
Above $25 per month
Premium or managed plans can reduce administration work or add stronger support, but protection and management may be separate line items. A plan advertised above $25 with DDoS protection sold as an add-on can cost materially more than its starting price. A higher-priced plan is not automatically faster than a cheaper plan; compare CPU generation, contention policy, storage and network route.
Match the VPS to the game and player load
There is no universal RAM requirement for “a game server.” Minecraft, Rust, ARK, Valheim and Counter-Strike 2 use different server builds, tick-rate behavior, mod ecosystems and world sizes. The available listings do not establish authoritative requirements for those games, so check each game’s official dedicated-server documentation before ordering.
Use a measurement-first estimate
- Write down the game version, mod or plugin set, expected simultaneous players and whether several worlds will run at once.
- Read the official server requirements for that exact version. Treat minimum requirements as a boot threshold, not a comfortable production target.
- Leave memory for the operating system, panel, database, monitoring and temporary update files. A plan advertised with 4 GB does not provide all 4 GB to the game process.
- Check single-thread CPU performance as well as the vCPU count. Simulation-heavy servers can be limited by one busy thread even when unused cores remain.
- Start with a short billing period, measure memory pressure and CPU steal time, then resize only after observing real use.
When 4 GB can be reasonable
A 4 GB plan can be a sensible entry point for a small, lightly modified server or a private group, provided the host supplies consistent CPU time and fast storage. It leaves little room for several large mods, a web panel, voice chat and a second game on the same machine.
When to consider 8–16 GB
Move toward the 8 GB/2 vCPU or 16 GB/4 vCPU class when the world is persistent, the player base is growing, the game is heavily modded or you need staging, backups and monitoring on the same VPS. More RAM prevents swapping, but it cannot compensate for a weak or throttled CPU.

Storage, DDoS protection and location
SSD versus NVMe
SSD storage is adequate for many servers, while NVMe can reduce load and save times when a game frequently reads world data. Storage capacity also determines whether you can retain rolling backups locally. A 60 GB SSD listing may be sufficient for one compact installation but can fill quickly with multiple worlds, crash dumps and backup archives.
DDoS protection
Protection must be described precisely. “Included” may mean basic network filtering, a traffic limit or protection only for selected ports. An add-on can change the monthly total, as shown by the Liquid Web listing. Ask whether mitigation covers volumetric attacks, whether the protected IP can be changed and what happens when an attack exceeds the plan’s allowance.
Datacenter distance
Choose a location close to most players, not simply the country with the lowest advertised price. Physical distance and network routing affect latency; a well-provisioned plan in a nearby region can feel better than a cheaper server across an ocean. If your group is geographically split, pick the region that serves the largest or most latency-sensitive group and test from the players’ actual networks.
Control panels versus manual administration
A game panel can install server files, schedule restarts, manage console access and simplify backups. Confirm whether the panel is included or billed separately, which games it supports and whether you retain full SSH or administrator access.

- Deploy a supported Linux distribution and create a non-root administrator account.
- Apply updates, enable automatic security updates where appropriate and restrict SSH to key-based authentication.
- Configure the firewall to allow SSH and only the game and panel ports you actually use.
- Install the game’s official server files, choose a dedicated data directory and set memory limits below the VPS’s total RAM.
- Run the server under a service manager so it restarts cleanly after maintenance or a crash.
- Schedule external backups and test restoring a world before inviting players.
- Record the game version, launch arguments, mods and configuration files so a rebuild is repeatable.
Do not expose a panel, database or remote console to the public internet without authentication and firewall rules. A low monthly price is not compensation for losing an unprotected world or account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Calculate the real monthly and annual cost
Use the renewal price, not the promotional headline. For example, a $3.99 monthly listing would total $47.88 over 12 months only if the same rate remains in force and no extras are added. A $17 plan would be $204 for a year at a constant rate; backups, snapshots, panel fees, additional IP addresses and DDoS add-ons can increase that total.
Before ordering, record:
- Monthly price after the first term and the billing interval.
- Setup, migration, cancellation and early-termination charges.
- Backup or snapshot pricing and retention period.
- Included outbound traffic and the overage rate.
- IPv4, IPv6 and additional-address costs.
- Tax, currency conversion and payment-processing charges for your region.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
The renewal bill is higher
Save a screenshot or copy of the checkout terms, then set a reminder before the first renewal. If the provider will not show a recurring price clearly, treat the offer as a trial rather than a long-term budget.
The server feels slow despite spare RAM
Check CPU steal time, per-core utilization, disk latency and network loss. A VPS can have free memory while competing for an oversold CPU or storage array. Move to a plan with stronger CPU allocation or a different host instead of adding RAM blindly.

Test latency from affected players, compare another datacenter and inspect routing during peak hours. Relocating the server may help more than changing the game configuration.
Best Value
A DDoS event takes the server offline
Confirm exactly what the plan protects, contact the provider’s abuse or network team and keep a current backup that can be restored elsewhere. If mitigation is an add-on, price it before publishing the server address.
The disk fills unexpectedly
World saves, logs, crash reports and local backups grow silently. Set log rotation, monitor disk usage and store at least one backup outside the VPS. Resizing storage is easier than recovering a corrupted full filesystem.
A game update breaks the installation
Take a snapshot or external backup before updating, pin the known-good server version and test updates on a staging copy. Keep a written rollback procedure rather than relying on a provider snapshot you have never restored.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the exact game, version, mods and expected simultaneous players.
- Verify RAM, vCPU model or allocation, storage type and usable disk capacity.
- Check the nearest available datacenter and test latency where possible.
- Read the DDoS scope, traffic limits and add-on price.
- Find the renewal price and every recurring extra before paying.
- Decide whether you need a panel or can manage Linux securely yourself.
- Confirm backup method, retention and restoration support.
- Check the cancellation policy and whether you can export the world and configuration.
Which option is the best value?
For a very small Minecraft group, the approximately $2.50 listing is the lowest-cost starting point, but its limited game focus and low-confidence price make verification essential. A 4 GB KVM plan near $4 is the budget benchmark; choose it only when the workload is modest and you have confirmed CPU consistency, storage and renewal billing.
For a general-purpose server with room to grow, the 8 GB/2 vCPU listing at $17 offers a clearer middle ground than the cheapest plans. The 16 GB/4 vCPU listing at $28 is the more comfortable choice when several services, heavier mods or a larger community justify the extra monthly cost. The $14.40 NVMe listing may be attractive when fast storage is the priority, but its reported price and included features need confirmation.
Premium listings above $25 make sense only when their support, management or network characteristics solve a specific problem. Do not pay a premium solely because a plan is labeled premium; compare its CPU, location, protection and support with the mid-tier alternatives.
Bottom line
Godlike.Host is listed first here: its gaming VPS plans run on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with full root access in Ashburn, Portland, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Singapore. Set a realistic floor of about $4–$6 per month for a dependable starting VPS, then size upward by game requirements and player load. Verify every advertised price, especially the $3.99 versus $4.59 4 GB discrepancy, and calculate the total after renewal, backups and DDoS protection. The cheapest plan that meets your measured CPU, RAM, storage and latency needs is a better buy than the lowest headline price.
