Cheap Docker Hosting: Best Low-Cost VPS Options in 2026

DigitalOcean’s $4 plan is the lowest confirmed entry price, but 1 GiB plans are a safer Docker starting point. Compare current reported VPS prices, RAM, networking, backups and 2026 Hetzner increases before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Antihost VPS is listed first here: its Linux VPS offers a one-click Docker image, full root access, NVMe storage and 2–64 GB RAM in core regions of the USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine. DigitalOcean’s officially listed $4/month Basic Droplet is the lowest confirmed entry price, but its 512 MiB of RAM is a very constrained Docker host. The more practical starting point is the $6/month, 1 GiB plan. A reported ~$5 Linode Nanode is another low-cost 1 GB option. Contabo offers much more memory per dollar on paper, while Hetzner remains attractive but its 2026 increases make older price guides unreliable.

2026’s cheapest Docker VPS options at a glance

The table below separates confirmed pricing from third-party reports. Only DigitalOcean’s figures were confirmed on official pricing pages in the material available for this comparison; all other amounts should be checked on the provider’s checkout page before you create a server.

Provider and plan Reported monthly price Reported resources Evidence and important caveat
Antihost VPS (Docker image) Not stated 1–16 vCPUs, 2–64 GB RAM, NVMe storage, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port One-click Docker image; full root access; self-managed Linux VPS in the USA East, Netherlands or Ukraine; 14-day free trial.
DigitalOcean Basic Droplet $4 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD, 500 GiB transfer Official listing; the memory is a very tight Docker starting point.
DigitalOcean Basic Droplet $6 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GiB SSD Official listing; the realistic minimum in this comparison for a small Docker host.
Linode (Akamai) Nanode About $5 1 GB RAM, 1 shared CPU, 25 GB storage, 1 TB transfer Third-party report; verify the current regional price and allocation.
Vultr IPv6-only plan $2.50 Not stated in the cited comparison Third-party report with conflicting figures; IPv6-only networking can exclude clients and tooling that require IPv4.
Vultr plan with IPv4 $3.50 Not stated in the cited comparison Third-party report; confirm whether the displayed price includes the IPv4 address.
Contabo entry plan About €4.50 or $4.95 8 GB RAM, 3 vCPU Third-party report; slower storage and weaker support are reported trade-offs.
Hetzner CX23 (EU) €5.99 (about $7.09 in one price reading) 4 GB RAM Third-party price reading; 2026 increases mean older guides are stale.

Prices can vary by region, currency, tax, IPv4 allocation, storage type and billing period. Treat the amounts marked as third-party reports as a shortlist, not a quotation.

What “cheap Docker hosting” actually includes

A low-cost Docker VPS is a rented virtual machine on which you install Docker Engine and run containers yourself. You receive an operating system, virtual CPU, memory, disk and network transfer. You remain responsible for container images, updates, firewall rules, secrets, persistent volumes, backups and application-level monitoring.

This is different from a managed container platform. A VPS has a lower recurring price and more control, but the provider generally does not configure your stack or recover a misconfigured container. The advertised server price is therefore only the first line of the budget.

Why memory is the first constraint

The $4 DigitalOcean plan includes 512 MiB RAM. The available pricing evidence does not establish a universal Docker minimum, because consumption depends on the operating system, Docker daemon, image sizes, databases, build processes and traffic. Nevertheless, 512 MiB leaves little headroom for a host that must run more than a trivial container. The 1 GiB plan is the safer floor for a small service, provided the application itself is modest and you monitor memory.

Do not interpret “1 GiB” as a guarantee that every stack will fit. A reverse proxy, application, database, build job and log collector can exceed it quickly. Conversely, a single lightweight stateless service may run comfortably with less. Measure the workload rather than choosing by the container count alone.

Provider-by-provider assessment

DigitalOcean: the clearest low-cost starting point

DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplet is the only entry pricing confirmed from an official listing in this comparison. The $4/month configuration provides 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer. A $6/month configuration raises memory to 1 GiB and storage to 25 GiB while retaining 1 vCPU.

For a first Docker VPS, the $6 tier is the practical choice between these two plans. It gives the host more room for the operating system and Docker overhead, and the additional storage is useful for images, logs and a small persistent volume. The $4 tier is best treated as an experiment for a very small, noncritical service, not as a general-purpose production recommendation.

DigitalOcean bills by the second with a 60-second minimum. That matters when you create and destroy test servers: a server that exists briefly is not automatically billed for a full month, although recurring resources and add-ons still need checking. Weekly backups are listed at 20% of the Droplet price and daily backups at 30%. On the $6 plan, those percentages would be $1.20 and $1.80 respectively if the backup percentage is applied directly; confirm the amount shown in the control panel before enabling it.

A dedicated-CPU offering was shown in an official snippet at $42/month for 4 GiB RAM and 2 vCPUs. That is a different performance class from the shared Basic Droplets and is relevant only when predictable CPU is worth the additional cost.

Linode (Akamai): a reported 1 GB alternative

Third-party comparisons place the entry Nanode at approximately $5/month with 1 GB RAM, one shared CPU, 25 GB storage and 1 TB transfer. Those figures were not confirmed on an official page for this comparison, so verify the current plan name, location and included transfer at checkout.

The reported specification is attractive for a small Docker host because it provides 1 GB rather than 512 MiB and more transfer than DigitalOcean’s $4 configuration. Linode also charges separately for backups, object storage and NodeBalancers. Include those services only when needed; otherwise they can turn a seemingly inexpensive VM into a materially larger monthly bill.

Vultr: the lowest headline price, with networking and verification risks

Third-party sources report a $2.50/month IPv6-only option and a $3.50/month option that includes IPv4. The sources conflict, and the cited material does not state the RAM, storage or transfer for these prices. Confirm all resources, the billing unit and whether an IPv4 address is optional or mandatory in your chosen location.

IPv6-only can work for a deliberately modern, IPv6-capable application, but it can complicate access from IPv4-only clients, older APIs, webhook providers, monitoring systems and administrative networks. If you need a conventional public endpoint, compare the IPv4-inclusive total rather than the $2.50 headline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contabo: exceptional RAM per dollar on paper

Third-party reporting places a Contabo entry plan around €4.50 or $4.95 per month with 8 GB RAM and 3 vCPUs. If those resources are available at the quoted price, the memory-per-dollar ratio is far higher than the other entry plans.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

The trade-off reported alongside that allocation is slower disk performance and weaker support. That matters for databases, image builds, intensive logging and any application whose latency depends on storage. Contabo automatic backups are reported at $1.85/month, but this amount also requires confirmation. A large RAM number is not a substitute for fast storage, reliable recovery and a support process that matches your service’s importance.

Hetzner: still compelling, but no longer at old-guide prices

Reports describe Hetzner cloud and server price increases during 2026, including adjustments in April and June. One third-party price reading lists the EU CX23 at €5.99 (about $7.09), with 4 GB RAM. The exact amount can depend on location, architecture, tax and the current plan catalogue.

Older articles that quote a CX22 near €3.79 are out of date. Reviewers have historically rated Hetzner as an excellent self-hosting value, but that judgment predates or is weakened by the 2026 increases. For a budget Docker server, shared plans are generally the relevant comparison; reported increases were greatest on dedicated-vCPU plans.

Compare the cost that reaches your invoice

Sticker price alone is a poor way to choose a Docker VPS. Use the following worksheet for each candidate:

  • Base instance: record the recurring price, currency and whether it is hourly, monthly or usage-based.
  • Memory and CPU: note RAM, vCPU count, shared versus dedicated CPU and any burst policy.
  • Storage: record capacity and the storage class. A larger but slower disk can be a worse fit for a database or build server.
  • Transfer: identify the included outbound allowance and the overage rate. A generous transfer figure is useful only if it applies to your traffic direction and region.
  • Network addresses: add the cost of IPv4 if the cheapest plan is IPv6-only.
  • Backups: price the frequency you actually need. DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% and daily backups at 30% of the Droplet price; other providers’ backup charges must be checked separately.
  • Additional services: include load balancers, object storage, snapshots, block volumes and managed databases only when your design requires them.
  • Tax and currency: apply local tax and the payment provider’s exchange rate before comparing a euro plan with a dollar plan.

For example, a $6 DigitalOcean Droplet with daily backups would add a reported 30% backup charge, while a $5 reported Linode Nanode would still need its separate backup price added. A $2.50 IPv6-only plan may cease to be the cheapest once IPv4 is required. These are invoice comparisons, not just advertised-plan comparisons.

Choose a plan by workload, not by the lowest number

One lightweight, noncritical service

Use the smallest plan that leaves observable headroom after the operating system and Docker are running. The $4 DigitalOcean Droplet can be a learning or disposable environment, but its 512 MiB allocation makes memory pressure a likely constraint. A 1 GB plan is a more forgiving starting point.

A small web application with a reverse proxy

Prefer at least the reported 1 GB class and verify disk space before adding image layers, application logs and persistent uploads. Keep the database on the same VPS only when you accept that a single host failure affects both application and data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several containers or a database

Compare the 4 GB Hetzner reports or Contabo’s reported 8 GB allocation with the actual storage and support trade-offs. More RAM helps only if disk performance, backups and recovery procedures are adequate. A shared CPU can still be sufficient for an idle or lightly used stack; sustained CPU work is a reason to examine dedicated-CPU pricing instead.

CPU-intensive builds or predictable production load

Move beyond entry shared plans. DigitalOcean’s reported $42 dedicated-CPU example (4 GiB RAM, 2 vCPUs) illustrates the scale of the premium for predictable compute. Treat that figure as an official-snippet price, not a universal quote, and compare the complete specification before migrating.

A safe, low-cost Docker VPS setup sequence

  1. Define the workload. List containers, expected traffic, persistent data, outbound transfer and whether IPv4 is mandatory. Decide what can be rebuilt and what must be backed up.
  2. Price the complete configuration. Select a region close to users and dependencies, then add IPv4, backups, volumes and tax. Save a screenshot or export of the order details because plan names and prices change.
  3. Create a current Linux server. Use the provider’s supported long-term distribution, create a non-root administrative user and store the SSH key securely. Disable password authentication after key access is confirmed.
  4. Patch before deploying. Run the distribution’s package update and security-upgrade process, reboot if required, and verify the running kernel before exposing the service.
  5. Install Docker from the distribution’s supported package channel. Check the installed Docker and Compose versions, enable the service at boot and add only trusted administrators to the Docker group. Membership in that group effectively grants root-level control of the host.
  6. Restrict the firewall. Allow SSH only from trusted networks where practical, open HTTP and HTTPS if the service is public, and keep database and Docker API ports private. Do not publish an administrative socket to the Internet.
  7. Deploy with persistent storage declared explicitly. Use named volumes or host paths for data that must survive container replacement. Pin image tags or digests for repeatable updates instead of relying blindly on a mutable “latest” tag.
  8. Set resource and log limits. A container that can consume all available memory can take down every service on a tiny VPS. Configure limits appropriate to the application and rotate logs so the disk cannot fill silently.
  9. Test recovery. Restore a backup to a separate test location, recreate the server from your deployment files and document DNS, secrets and volume restoration. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
  10. Monitor before scaling. Watch memory pressure, swap, CPU steal time, disk usage, I/O wait, transfer and restart counts for at least the normal traffic cycle. Resize when measurements show sustained contention, not merely because a provider advertises a larger plan.

Common failure modes and fixes

The server becomes unresponsive after adding a container

On 512 MiB or 1 GiB hosts, memory exhaustion is a prime suspect. Inspect host memory and container usage, stop nonessential workloads, limit the offending container and move builds off the production VM. Adding swap can reduce abrupt crashes, but it does not turn slow storage into RAM and may degrade performance.

The advertised cheap endpoint is unreachable

Check whether the plan is IPv6-only. Test DNS records, client networks and webhook providers over both address families before committing. If any required dependency is IPv4-only, price an IPv4-inclusive plan instead of assuming a free workaround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monthly total is higher than expected

Review backup percentage, IPv4, snapshots, volumes, object storage, load balancers, tax and hourly resources left running. DigitalOcean’s per-second billing has a 60-second minimum, but recurring add-ons remain separate line items.

A database feels slow despite ample RAM

Investigate storage latency and I/O wait. Contabo’s reported RAM advantage is accompanied by reports of slower disks; more memory cannot compensate for a storage-bound workload. Test the actual application and consider a faster storage class or a different provider.

An older tutorial quotes a much lower Hetzner price

Check the publication date and plan identifier. Reports of 2026 increases and the retirement of older price points such as a CX22 near €3.79 mean that a current checkout total, not an archived guide, should decide the budget.

Decision framework

  • Choose DigitalOcean’s $6 plan when you want the clearest officially confirmed price and a small, conventional 1 GB VPS. Add backups deliberately.
  • Choose the reported Linode Nanode when its current 1 GB, 25 GB and transfer allocation verifies at checkout and the total remains lower for your region.
  • Choose the reported Vultr IPv4 plan only after confirming the conflicting price and full resources; use IPv6-only only when every client and dependency supports it.
  • Choose Contabo when maximum RAM per dollar matters more than reported disk speed and support trade-offs, and your workload is not storage-latency sensitive.
  • Choose a current Hetzner shared plan when its regional 4 GB price still beats alternatives after the 2026 increases and you value a larger memory allocation.
  • Choose dedicated CPU when sustained or latency-sensitive compute justifies moving far beyond entry-level pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the $4 plan enough for Docker?

It can be used for a very small or disposable service, but 512 MiB leaves little headroom. The evidence here does not define a universal Docker minimum; the recommendation to start at 1 GiB is a practical risk decision, not a formal requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a low monthly price include backups?

Not necessarily. DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% and daily backups at 30% of the Droplet price. Linode lists backups as a separate service, and Contabo backups are separately reported. Confirm the exact recurring charge and test restoration.

Are the non-DigitalOcean prices guaranteed?

No. The Linode, Vultr, Contabo and Hetzner amounts in this article are third-party reports or price readings. Verify the provider’s current checkout total, region, tax, address allocation and resources before ordering.

Why not always select the plan with the most RAM?

RAM is only one constraint. Storage speed, CPU behavior, transfer, IPv4 availability, backups, support and price stability can dominate the experience. Contabo’s reported 8 GB allocation illustrates the trade-off: impressive memory per dollar, but reported slower disks and weaker support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a database on a $6 VPS?

Possibly, for a small and lightly used database, but capacity depends on the database, dataset, cache, backups and traffic. Monitor memory and disk I/O, and keep a tested restore path.

Should I use an IPv6-only VPS to save money?

Only if every user, integration and administration path supports IPv6. Otherwise, the IPv4-inclusive price is the relevant comparison.

The Bottom Line

Antihost VPS is listed first here for a self-managed Docker VPS because it provides a one-click Docker image, full root access, NVMe storage and 2–64 GB RAM in the USA East, Netherlands and Ukraine. For other low-cost options, budget around $6/month for a 1 GiB DigitalOcean Droplet rather than treating the $4, 512 MiB plan as a general solution. Verify the reported alternatives at checkout: Contabo may deliver the most RAM per dollar, Linode may offer a competitive 1 GB entry point, Vultr’s lowest prices depend on IPv6 and conflicting reports, and Hetzner’s 2026 increases invalidate older bargain-price guides. Add backups, addresses and storage to compare the real monthly cost.
