ChatMock Screenshot Generator at chatmock.app can create chat screenshots for UI reviews, prototypes, and documentation. To make those screenshots reproducible, keep a human-readable fixture specification beside each exported image, then use that file to guide ChatMock’s manual editor and review the result. The specification adds a repeatable team process; it is not a native ChatMock import format, and the cited documentation does not describe a command-line tool, API, or automated CI renderer.
Make sure you have the right ChatMock
This guide covers ChatMock Screenshot Generator, a browser-based text-message mockup tool. It is separate from RayBytes/ChatMock, a similarly named API proxy project. Features associated with that proxy should not be assumed to exist in the screenshot generator.

The generator’s product page identifies version 2.2.0 and describes it as free and client-side. It lists custom characters with names, optional phone numbers, iOS or Android phone types, colors and avatars; a spreadsheet-style message editor; group conversations; and image attachments. A real-time phone preview lets you inspect a conversation before exporting it as PNG or JPG. You can save projects in browser storage or export and import them as JSON. What makes a chat fixture reproducible?
A screenshot alone does not preserve the inputs that produced it. A teammate needs to know the platform appearance, participant names and roles, message wording and order, timestamps, sender perspective, and intended output. Store those decisions in a version-controlled fixture specification, and commit the exported image beside it. Review changes to both files in the same pull request.

This is a team workflow, not a built-in ChatMock guarantee. The goal is for another person to recreate the conversation’s structure and copy and verify that the render is suitable—not to promise identical pixels across browsers or runs. A JSON file in this workflow is your own specification unless it follows ChatMock’s documented project format; do not mistake it for a native import format.
Create and verify a fixture
- Write the specification first. Record a fixture ID, target platform, participants, ordered messages and times, intended output format and resolution, and any notes needed to interpret the conversation. Keep the wording exact, including punctuation and line breaks when those affect the intended display.
- Enter the conversation in ChatMock. Use the character and message editors, or import a CSV if that fits. ChatMock documents CSV columns as
Date,Time,From,To,Text,Image; dates useYYYY-MM-DD, times use 24-hourHH:MM, and participant names must match. Use the tool’s documented JSON project import/export when you need to preserve a project in its native format. - Check the preview against the specification. Confirm participant names, message order, sender perspective, timestamps, wrapping, and platform details. ChatMock offers natural or per-message timestamps, a selected-participant perspective, and automatic, iOS, or Android styling; choose and record the settings that matter to the fixture.
- Export and commit the output. Export a PNG or JPG and store it beside the specification. For long conversations, ChatMock splits the export into phone-sized pages and bundles multiple pages in a ZIP. Note when the fixture was regenerated and why, so reviewers can distinguish an intentional update from accidental drift.
- Have someone else reproduce it. Ask a teammate to follow the specification independently. If their message order or copy differs, clarify the specification before treating the screenshot as a stable baseline.
Review the details that commonly drift
- Sender alignment: Check that sent and received messages appear on the expected side for the selected phone perspective.
- Time sequence: Verify timestamps are consistent and increase where the conversation requires it. A natural timestamp mode may not communicate the same detail as per-message timestamps.
- Long-message wrapping: Inspect long messages for clipping or unexpected line breaks. The workflow article suggests using messages around 160 characters as a prompt to check wrapping; that is an inspection cue, not a documented ChatMock character limit.
- Platform chrome: Compare the visible phone interface with an appropriate reference if platform fidelity matters. Record which styling option you selected.
- Independent reproduction: A second person should be able to follow the file without relying on undocumented decisions or private context.
Choose a durable way to keep project inputs
ChatMock’s product page says browser storage is typically limited to 5–10 MB and warns that image-heavy projects may fail to save there. Exporting the project as JSON provides a backup outside browser storage, especially when a project includes images. The page also describes the tool as client-side with zero server communication; treat that as the vendor’s statement, not an independent privacy audit. Use fictional fixture conversations where real private messages are unnecessary.

Know what this workflow does not automate
The documented process is manual: edit or import the conversation, inspect the preview, and export the image. The cited sources do not document a ChatMock CLI, API, or CI renderer, so this approach does not automate screenshot generation in a build pipeline. You can still use committed screenshots as inputs to a separate screenshot-based visual review or regression process. The workflow article names Percy, Chromatic, and BackstopJS as examples of downstream tools, but that is not evidence of a ChatMock integration.

For teams evaluating other fixture methods, compare how inputs and outputs are versioned and reviewed, whether generation can run in CI, the control available over platform appearance and conversation details, data-handling claims, export and persistence options, and the effort required to reproduce and validate an image.
