Use ChatGPT when you want AI to help draft, revise, or work with project context. Use Google Docs when you need a shared manuscript for editing, comments, suggestions, version review, or offline work. They can overlap: eligible ChatGPT Space pages support real-time editing, while Google Docs also offers plan-dependent AI features. The better choice depends on the writing task, not a blanket claim that one is better.
What “ChatGPT workspace” means
ChatGPT does not have one writing feature called “workspace” that maps neatly to Google Docs. Its writing-related tools have different roles: Canvas is a side-by-side space for working on text or code; Projects group related chats, files, and instructions; Work is a task-oriented experience for research, analysis, and deliverables, subject to access; and Space provides editable pages and files. Which one matters depends on how you plan to write.

When ChatGPT is the better primary writing surface
Make ChatGPT the main drafting environment if the assistant is part of the writing process rather than just a tool you consult occasionally. It is especially useful when you want to develop an outline, test different framings, rewrite a passage for a particular audience, or ask for feedback using files and instructions associated with a project.

Use Canvas for focused work on a draft
OpenAI’s October 2024 Canvas launch described a side-by-side writing interface with direct edits, inline suggestions, length changes, reading-level adjustments, final polishing, and the ability to restore earlier Canvas versions. OpenAI summed up the intended relationship in that announcement: “You control the project in canvas.” That statement describes the Canvas launch, not every current ChatGPT feature. Because the announcement is dated, check current Help Center guidance for availability and exact controls before relying on a particular Canvas workflow.
Use Projects when the work has continuing context
A Project is useful when a writing effort spans multiple chats or requires a set of reference files and instructions to stay together. Shared Projects can give members access to common project material, but membership limits, sharing controls, and availability depend on plan and workspace settings. Treat it as a shared context hub, not automatically as the final manuscript or a substitute for checking who can see the material.

Consider Space for a collaboratively edited page
Space pages are editable documents that can be worked on with ChatGPT and teammates. OpenAI’s product information says people with edit access can work on a page at the same time and leave comments. At the time of the cited review, Space was listed for Pro, Business, and Enterprise; mobile editing and collaborative slides or spreadsheets were described as not yet available. Rollout and plan availability can change, so verify access and capabilities in your account before choosing it for a team workflow.

Choose Docs when the important deliverable is a durable shared document that people need to edit, comment on, suggest changes to, and review. Google’s collaboration guidance describes these permission-based roles, while version history helps editors inspect earlier versions and restore one when needed. That makes Docs a natural home for a manuscript moving through review, approval, and handoff.

Use Docs when review and handoff are central
Docs keeps the document itself at the center of collaboration. Before sharing, set and check the document’s access permissions. If several people need to propose changes without directly replacing the author’s text, use suggestion mode; use comments for discussion tied to the document.
Use Docs when you need offline access
Google supports offline editing after configuration. On desktop, its stated requirements include Chrome or Edge, no private browsing, and enabling Docs Offline. Set this up and confirm the relevant files are available on the device before you lose connectivity; edits sync to Drive after you reconnect. Google also documents offline support on mobile, but the exact setup differs from desktop.

Can you collaborate on a ChatGPT document like a Google Doc?
Sometimes, but the workflows are not identical. Eligible ChatGPT Space pages support real-time editing and comments, while shared Projects focus on common context and chats. Google Docs centers collaboration on a shared document with editing, comments, suggestions, and version history. If a team is considering Space, verify plan access, mobile support, workspace permissions, and how the finished work will be exported or handed off.

- Develop the work in ChatGPT. Use the relevant feature—Canvas for a focused draft, or a Project when files and instructions should stay with related chats—to brainstorm, draft, or revise.
- Move approved copy into a shared Google Doc when review is the next job. Invite collaborators with appropriate permissions and use comments or suggestions for review.
- Keep the handoff deliberate. This is a workflow suggestion, not a claim of a guaranteed one-click transfer. Confirm that the version in Docs is the one reviewers should treat as current.
- Prepare offline access in Docs ahead of time if you expect to work without a connection, and check that the actual files are available on the device.
How to decide
- Choose ChatGPT if frequent AI-assisted brainstorming, drafting, critique, or revision is central to the task.
- Choose Google Docs if the priority is a clear shared source of truth, structured document review, revision history, or planned offline editing.
- Use both if you want ChatGPT to help create or improve the text and Docs to serve as the review-and-handoff document.
There is no established head-to-head study here showing that one produces better writing or higher productivity. The useful distinction is the workflow each supports; plan access, workspace controls, and feature rollout can change.
