Choose based on where you work and what you need changed. ChatGPT offers spreadsheet experiences in Excel and Google Sheets as well as file-based analysis; Gemini’s documented spreadsheet-native tools work inside Google Sheets; Claude can analyze uploaded data and create downloadable Excel workbooks. The available documentation does not establish an overall accuracy winner. For important work, test each option with a copy of the same representative workbook and verify the results.
How the three spreadsheet workflows differ
These products overlap, but they are not interchangeable. The practical distinction is the spreadsheet surface each one documents, whether it can make changes in that surface or deliver a generated workbook, and what account or file conditions apply. A tool that answers questions about uploaded data may suit an analysis task, while a tool in the spreadsheet app may be more convenient when you need to act on the workbook itself.

This is a capability comparison, not a performance ranking. Official feature pages describe workflows and supported operations; they do not show which system makes fewer mistakes on the same workbook. If formula correctness or analysis quality is your deciding factor, use a controlled test rather than a broad vendor claim.
Choose by your spreadsheet app and desired result
If you work in Excel
ChatGPT’s documented spreadsheet experience includes Excel, so it is a candidate when you want assistance in the workbook surface rather than a detached answer about an upload. Claude is relevant if you want to provide data and receive an Excel workbook as an output. The documented Gemini Sheets workflow is centered on Google Sheets; it is not the direct choice when the requirement is to use Gemini’s spreadsheet actions on an Excel .xlsx file as-is.

Decide whether the result must be an edit to your active workbook or a separate generated file. For an in-place workflow, confirm that the spreadsheet integration is available and authorized in your account before planning around it. For generated output, check the file-size limit and inspect the finished workbook’s formulas and layout before replacing or sharing the original.
If you work in Google Sheets
Gemini’s native integration is directly relevant when you want to ask about the sheet, create a formula, build a chart, or apply supported editing actions. ChatGPT also documents a spreadsheet experience for Google Sheets, with access affected by the plan, workspace administration, permissions, and connected-data entitlements. Which one fits better depends on which is enabled in your account and which actions you need.
Do not assume that a file stored in Drive automatically has the same workflow as an open native sheet. ChatGPT’s separate data-analysis workflow may connect to sources such as Google Drive, OneDrive, and SharePoint when the account supports them. Gemini’s documented Sheets features, by contrast, are designed for the Google Sheets interface and work best with native Sheets files.

If you want to upload data and get an analysis or workbook back
ChatGPT’s data-analysis workflow accepts spreadsheet formats including .xls, .xlsx, and .csv, although supported types depend on model, plan, workspace settings, and account capability. Claude can analyze CSV and TSV data and use Python-based analysis and visualization; its file workflow can also produce an Excel workbook. If the output needs formulas, formatting, or charts rather than only a written explanation, Claude’s documented workbook-generation workflow is a plausible fit.

Gemini’s documented strength in this comparison is its in-Sheets workflow. If your source is an Excel file and you want Gemini’s Sheets actions, Google instructs users to save or convert the .xlsx to Google Sheets first. That conversion changes the working format, so retain the original if the Excel file must remain authoritative.
What each product can do with a spreadsheet
ChatGPT: spreadsheet assistance and file analysis
OpenAI documents ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets as spreadsheet-native experiences that can process a prompt, attachments, and relevant spreadsheet context to provide analysis and update a workbook. This is useful when the task involves interpreting the existing sheet and making changes in the spreadsheet workflow, rather than merely describing a file in a chat.
Separately, ChatGPT data analysis supports spreadsheet uploads such as .xls, .xlsx, and .csv, with supported types subject to account and workspace conditions. Connectors may provide files from Google Drive, OneDrive, and SharePoint where enabled. These are distinct routes: a file upload or connected source is not the same thing as an authorized spreadsheet-native experience.
OpenAI says access to the spreadsheet experience is described across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 offerings, but limits and access differ by plan. Workspace administrators can manage access. Connected apps additionally depend on plan, administrator settings, permissions, and data-source entitlements. For organizational use, OpenAI documents role-based access and, where available, data and inference residency and Enterprise Key Management. It also says some data logs may be stored for 30 days for safety and integrity. Check the current configuration for your specific account and workspace before placing business data into a workflow.

Claude: uploaded-data analysis and generated Excel files
Anthropic documents Claude workflows for analyzing CSV, TSV, and other uploaded files, with Python scripts available for analysis and visualizations that can be generated as PNG files. For spreadsheet output, Claude can create or edit Excel workbooks containing formulas, formatting, and charts. The documented flow is to create or edit a file in Claude, then download it or save it to Google Drive.
Anthropic’s support page, dated August 6, 2026, specifies a maximum of 30 MB per file for upload and download in this workflow. That limit is per file, not a statement about every Claude feature or every account’s total storage. If a workbook exceeds it, reduce the file only if doing so preserves the relevant data, or split the task into meaningful, auditable sections. Reconcile any separately analyzed sections before treating the result as a complete workbook.
Anthropic announced file creation on September 9, 2025, and said the feature became generally available for paid plans with network and egress controls on October 21, 2025. Those dates describe the feature announcement and availability noted by Anthropic; current access still depends on the plan and account’s controls. Verify present entitlements rather than assuming that every account has identical file capabilities.

Gemini: formula help, data questions, charts, and direct Sheets actions
Google documents Gemini within Google Sheets for questions about sheet data, formula creation, fixing formula errors, data analysis, and chart generation. Its documented direct actions also cover conditional formatting, dropdowns, pivot tables, filters, sorting, find-and-replace, filling ranges, and inserting or deleting rows and columns.

For supported direct edits, the workflow includes an action preview and an Apply step. That provides a useful review point: read the proposed operation before applying it, particularly when the action affects a large range or changes the shape of the sheet. Google’s help page gives examples such as “Summarize this spreadsheet.” and “Identify trends in this table.” Those are examples of natural-language requests, not guarantees that the output is correct or complete.
Google says an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan is required, and eligibility may vary. Its help documentation says Gemini works best with native Google Sheets files and instructs users to convert an .xlsx to Google Sheets to use Gemini Sheets features. If keeping an Excel-native workflow is essential, factor in that format requirement before choosing this path.

No independent controlled comparison of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini using the same workbooks, prompts, account conditions, and scoring criteria is established here. A small side-by-side trial is more useful than treating feature lists as evidence of accuracy. Use a copy of a workbook that resembles your real task, but remove confidential or personal information unless your organization has approved the service and configuration for that data.

Include the kinds of formulas, sheet names, blank cells, date formats, and data layouts that matter in your work. Keep the original untouched so that you can compare outputs and recover from unwanted edits.
- State one verifiable task at a time. For example, ask for a total by category, a formula for a specified range, or a chart from named columns. Give the expected scope and output format. Avoid bundling unrelated changes, because that makes it harder to tell which instruction caused an error.
- Use the workflow each product actually documents. Test ChatGPT in the spreadsheet experience if you need a workbook edit, or use its file-analysis workflow for an uploaded file. Test Claude’s upload and workbook-generation path if a generated Excel file is the target. Use Gemini in Google Sheets for its native actions, converting an .xlsx first when needed.
- Record account conditions. Note the plan, workspace settings, permissions, file format, and whether a connector or native integration was used. Features and connected data can be unavailable under a different account even when the product name is the same.
- Inspect the actual workbook, not just the explanation. Check formulas, cell references, totals, formatting, chart ranges, filters, and the exact cells that changed. Recalculate key figures independently or compare them with a trusted source before relying on them.
- Score the outcome against your task. Record whether the requested cells or analysis were correct, whether the workbook remained usable, how much correction was needed, and whether the result was delivered in the required format. Repeat with more than one representative task before making a decision.
Keep the prompt and workbook constant when comparing tools, and distinguish an answer that sounds plausible from a verified result. A single successful run does not establish a general accuracy ranking; a single failure may instead reflect a malformed file, a permissions issue, or an unclear request.
Spreadsheet risks and ways to reduce them
Complex files can produce incomplete analysis
OpenAI specifically warns that very large, complex, image-heavy, or poorly structured files may not be fully analyzed. It recommends inspecting sections or splitting a file when a result seems incomplete. For exact values, OpenAI advises using spreadsheet or text-based files rather than relying on scanned or image-based tables.
Make the task easier to verify by naming the relevant sheet and columns, asking for a defined range, and checking whether the response addresses all requested parts. If the workbook has many tabs or embedded visual data, ask about a clearly delimited section first and compare the answer with the source. Do not infer that a neat summary means every row or image was processed.
Formula and edit errors can be hard to notice
A formula can look syntactically sound while using the wrong range, treating blanks incorrectly, or referring to the wrong sheet. A formatting change can also hide rather than fix a data issue. Review the changed cells and references, compare before-and-after totals, and test formulas on a few rows with known outcomes. For a direct-edit workflow, preserve a recoverable copy and review the preview or proposed actions before applying them.
Permissions and data controls are part of the choice
Availability is not only a question of whether a product advertises a feature. ChatGPT spreadsheet access and connected sources can be controlled by plan, administrator, permissions, and entitlements. Claude file creation availability and controls depend on plan and account configuration. Gemini requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan, with eligibility varying. For organization-owned data, ask the workspace administrator which tools are enabled and permitted, and confirm the relevant data handling rules before uploading or connecting a workbook.
What the published benchmark does—and does not—show
OpenAI reported 43.7% with GPT-5 and 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking on its internal investment banking benchmark in 2026. OpenAI describes tasks including building a three-statement model with formatting and citations. These are OpenAI-reported results for its own internal benchmark; they are not a shared test of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini on identical spreadsheet tasks.
The figures therefore cannot establish that one of these three products is the most accurate, best at formulas, or fastest in ordinary spreadsheet work. The benchmark’s task scope also differs from many everyday needs, such as cleaning a small sheet, explaining a formula, or sorting a table. Use the reported result as a limited vendor-published benchmark claim, not as a universal buying verdict.
Recommendation by use case
- Choose ChatGPT for consideration if you want a spreadsheet-native assistant in Excel or Google Sheets, or need a separate workflow for analyzing supported spreadsheet files. Confirm that your plan, workspace administrator, and connected-data permissions permit the workflow you intend to use.
- Choose Claude for consideration if you want to upload data for analysis or generate an Excel workbook with formulas, formatting, and charts. Check the documented 30 MB per-file constraint and your account’s current plan and controls.
- Choose Gemini for consideration if you want to work in Google Sheets and use its documented formula, chart, analysis, sorting, filtering, pivot, and formatting actions. Confirm eligibility and convert an Excel file to native Sheets format when required.
For an accuracy-sensitive workflow, the best choice is the one that completes your representative task correctly, leaves a verifiable workbook, and meets your account’s data and access requirements. Product documentation supports these workflow distinctions, but not a three-way accuracy winner.
