The Mac app is therefore not a local-only alternative to using ChatGPT in a browser. The meaningful differences are feature-specific: the Mac app can request macOS permissions for photo and camera workflows, while its built-in browser has separate browser state from Chrome and offers website-access controls. Those distinctions are not proof that one option is categorically safer.
Is the ChatGPT Mac app more private than the browser?
Not on the basis of chat and file retention. OpenAI says that conversations, screenshots, and files in the macOS app follow the same retention policies as the web version. Its guidance also says files uploaded through the Mac app are stored in the cloud and tied to the user’s OpenAI account, rather than kept only on the Mac. OpenAI’s macOS retention guidance describes the same policy for both interfaces.
“In a browser” can mean two different things: opening the ChatGPT website in Safari, Chrome, or another regular browser, or using the built-in browser feature in the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI’s retention comparison is between the macOS app and the web version; its built-in-browser documentation covers a separate feature and does not compare every browser or configuration.

Does the ChatGPT Mac app store chats locally?
OpenAI says app conversations, screenshots, and files follow the same retention policies as the web version. Files uploaded in the Mac app are stored in the cloud and associated with the OpenAI account. The app is a native interface, not a promise that the content stays on the device.

OpenAI Help Center says deleted chats and files are fully removed from its systems within 30 days, with exceptions that can include content already de-identified and disassociated from the account, or material it must retain for legal or security reasons. This is OpenAI’s stated policy, not an independent audit of how deletion is implemented. See How is data retained in the macOS app?
Does ChatGPT use my conversations to train models in the Mac app?
OpenAI’s cited guidance says individual-user content, including use of the macOS app, may be used to improve models by default. Users can opt out in account Data Controls; new conversations after opting out will not be used to train models, according to the same guidance. This is an account data choice, not a privacy advantage of the Mac app over the website.

Review the current choices in your ChatGPT account’s Data Controls. Workspace or plan settings may affect which controls are available, so do not assume that a setting visible on one account applies to another. OpenAI’s policy details are in its data controls and macOS retention guidance.
Does the ChatGPT app need access to my camera or photos?
The Mac app may ask for macOS permissions when you use particular media features. OpenAI’s guidance describes photo-library permission for its documented photo-upload workflow, camera permission to take and upload a photo, and permission to add photos to Photos in the relevant flow. These feature-specific prompts do not by themselves show that ChatGPT can continuously access the camera or the entire photo library.

Grant only the permissions needed for the feature you intend to use. You can review or change app permissions in macOS settings. The exact prompt and workflow may vary by macOS and app version; OpenAI’s current description is in its guidance on photo permissions in the macOS app.
Does ChatGPT’s in-app browser use my Chrome cookies?
No. OpenAI says, “The built-in browser uses its own browser state.” It does not use a person’s Chrome profile, cookies, saved passwords, extensions, open tabs, or existing sign-ins. As a result, you may have to sign in again to a website in that in-app browser. This statement is about the browser built into the ChatGPT desktop app; it should not be generalized to the ChatGPT website opened in Chrome or another regular browser. The built-in browser also has website-access settings and may ask before using a new website. Separate browser state can limit reuse of a browser profile, but it is not a guarantee against phishing, unsafe sites, or other risks.

OpenAI says its desktop site tools ask permission before interacting with a website and request confirmation before sensitive actions, including sharing personal information, making purchases, deleting data, changing account permissions, or sending messages. These prompts are safeguards, not a guarantee that every interaction is safe. Website content can be untrusted and may attempt to manipulate an AI system or expose data. OpenAI’s advice is to enter passwords directly on the website, never into the ChatGPT conversation. Details are in OpenAI’s desktop website-interaction guidance.

- Check the website and account before approving access or an action.
- Do not paste passwords into a ChatGPT conversation.
- Pause before confirming actions that send, delete, purchase, or change access to information.
What if I use connected apps or workplace ChatGPT?
Connected services
For connected apps, permissions govern when ChatGPT asks to use access already granted; they do not grant new access on their own. OpenAI distinguishes these permissions from general data controls such as retention and model-improvement choices. Information sent to a connected provider may also be subject to that provider’s own terms and privacy policy. See OpenAI’s connected-app permissions guidance.
Managed Mac environments
OpenAI documents macOS MDM controls for the desktop browser, using the com.openai.codex managed-preferences domain and browser-policy settings. These controls are for administrators configuring an organization’s environment; their existence does not mean an individual user receives greater security simply by choosing the app. Workplace users should ask their administrator which policies apply. How to choose and reduce exposure
Choose based on the feature and controls you need, rather than assuming that one interface keeps conversations more private. For either the Mac app or the website:
- Review account Data Controls and make the model-improvement choice that fits your needs.
- Share only information needed for the task, especially when a connected service or website is involved.
- Grant macOS camera or photo permissions only when using the related feature.
- In the in-app browser, check website access and verify the site before approving interaction.
- If you use a work account or managed Mac, check with your organization about its workspace settings and device policies.
OpenAI’s documentation explains its stated policies and product controls; it does not provide an independent, controlled comparison of the security of the Mac app, the ChatGPT website, and third-party browsers. Your account settings, device security, browser configuration, organization policies, and the information you choose to share all affect the practical risk.
